  "It’s growing in every way—in awareness and attendance, in designers and sponsorship," said FDCC president Robin Kay, who noted that more than 35 sponsors have signed on to support Fashion Week, during which more than 70 designers will showcase their work in 38 shows on two runways (a first for L'Oréal Fashion Week). • Lancôme signs Arlenis (Vogue.com UK)
  Lancôme has signed 19-year-old Dominican model Arlenis Sosa as the latest face to front its advertising campaigns, joining Anne Hathway, Kate Winslet and Daria Werbowy, amongst others. Sosa, who was only scouted this April, has already posed for Italian and American Vogue and appeared in her first catwalk shows in this season's New York Fashion Week. "I'm so blessed to be given this opportunity," the model told WWD, "One minute I am walking down the street and the next I am coming to the U.S….and appearing in ads for a major company." • Balenciaga Fragrance Launch (Vogue.com UK)
  Balenciaga has signed a contract with Coty Prestige to create a new fragrance, expected for release in early 2010. And although it may not be the first time that the design house has entered the beauty market, under the guiding hands of Creative Director Nicolas Ghesquière and CEO Isabelle Guichot, the new scent is sure to be Balenciaga's most lucrative step into the industry. "Fragrance is something that was absolutely missing in the Balenciaga universe," Guichot told WWD, "We want to extend the Balenciaga brand to a broader audience." - Tags: none

  The country's luxury goods market has not been spared the financial crisis that is spreading from the West, a consumer fair has shown.

  Spending patterns at a luxury goods fair in Shanghai this year have shown that buyers are tightening purse strings and not paying for astronomically priced luxury items as readily as before, vendors have said.

  The provincial minister responsible for the status of women in Quebec had the fashion industry in her sights as she announced plans to adopt a charter that would call for an end to ultra-thin models on runways and magazine pages.

  Christine St. Pierre's decision to form a committee to look at the idea of a charter that would take the "skinny" out of fashion shows comes at the beginning of Montreal Fashion Week, which started Monday and ends Friday. - Tags: none

  HONG KONG (AFP) — The question of whether the Asian market for branded handbags, watches, jewellery and fashion will be snipped or scalped by the likely global economic slowdown is dominating retailers' minds.

  During a recent trip to her "expensive" Hong Kong hairdresser, luxury brand consultant Radha Chadha asked her stylist if recent turmoil in the world's stock markets had affected business.

  "I am now offering people shorter haircuts. It's so they will last longer," the stylist told Chadha, author of "The Cult of the Luxury Brand: Inside Asia's Love Affair with Luxury".

  Over the past five years, Asia has provided extremely strong profits growth for luxury names such as Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Rolex, Chadha said. - Tags: none
