I’ve got two Toronto event invites this week that I’m really excited about so I thought I should share them. These aren’t private events but ones you can participate in.
First off is Operanation. I’ve talked about Operanation before and it’s one of my favourite fundraiser events in Toronto.
“Operanation is the Canadian Opera Company’s premier fundraising event. For arts patrons as well as the opera-curious, Operanation presents a unique experience, equal parts party and performance, with special collaborations between classic and modern music and complementary art forms ranging from visual arts to fashion. Attracting over 1,000 guests, Operanation takes over three floors of the COC’s opera house, the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts. Funds raised for Operanation are directed towards the COC’s Ensemble Studio, Canada’s premier training program for young opera professionals.â€
It’s the 11th edition of this fundraiser and co-chairs Randi Bergman, Anne Maggisano and Patrick Sambrook have created a night full of contemporary art, music and Canadian fashion all wrapped up in a 90s theme. For each Operanation, a musical guest pairs up with stars from the COC for a performance. This year’s musical guest is the French dance-pop Band Yelle and I’m pretty excited to see what they come up with. Keith Cole, Derek Liddington, and Orest Tataryn are the contemporary artists that have created activations that will delight the crowd. We can look forward to dance, singing and visual installations tomorrow. On the fashion front, Beaufille, Sarah Stevenson Design and Kaelen have created snap bracelets, a 90s staple, which will be sold as part Operanation’s annual raffle.
Tickets for Operanation are $150 (which includes drinks and food) and available online.
The second event I’m super excited about is Red Bull Flying Bach. Think break dancing and classical music together. I’m a big fan of mashups like this. Dance crew The Flying Steps who are four time break dance world champions will join contemporary Swedish dancer Anna Holmström to perform to Bach’s The Well-Tempered Clavier. Check out this preview
The show runs from October 16 – 19, 2014 at Massey Hall. Tickets range from $25 to $70 and can be purchased online.
