NYC Fashion Week Spring 2008 - Street Trends
There were two things that really stuck out for me in New York.
1. Men carried Manbags. All kinds of guys with all kinds of bags, not just the fashion insiders. I liked the look actually and I hope it spreads. Hell, I even liked the guy rocking the clutch at Phi.

2. Goyard is king. I didn’t see a lot of Louis Vuitton, but I saw a lot of Goyard, fake and real. You could get Goyard fakes on every street corner. At night, every street corner had a bunch of guys selling handbags out of garbage bags and boxes. Fucking hilarious.

For those that don’t know, Goyard is an old french company that makes very expensive luggage and handbags.

The midriff is coming back, God please no!
I’ve noticed a few runways shows for Spring 2008 that have featured the dreaded midriff. I saw some midriff action at Doo Ri. I was hoping that it was just one of those random things, but it seems to be gathering steam. Perhaps it won’t be a full blow trend for Spring 2008 (and god I hope so), but I can see a return to it in Spring 2009.

Trend Forecasting - Fall 2008/2009
I attended a Fall 2008-2009 trend forecasting seminar with the Toronto Fashion Incubator. It’s a membership perk as this seminar is not open to the public. I also have access to the Womenswear trendbook at the TFI office. These books are amazing and extremely pricey.
I’m loving the ideas for Fall 2008. I took a whole ton of notes and I have to compile them.
The seminar was given by Natalie Gauthier from the company Promostyl, International Trend Research and Design Agency.
The Canuck version of the Haramaki
I’ve talked about my love for the Haramaki on I want - I got. I was happy that Alex from Yogagurl dropped me a note to let me know about their belly warmers.

They are unfortunately only available in black. What I love about the japanese version is the colours and prints. However, if you aren’t into crazy prints and colours this would be a good purchase.

Yogagurl is based out of Toronto, Ontario.

Technosexuals, me and Amber MacArthur

I somehow managed to get myself on television on Friday. Citytv international’s Amber MacArthur was doing a piece on the new Calvin Klein perfume in2u and I guess I was the subject matter expert. The marketing is just nutty for this brand. Here is an example of the crap they are coming up with.
“We have envisioned this as the first fragrance for the technosexual generation,” said Mr. Murry, using a term the company made up to describe its intended audience of thumb-texting young people whose romantic lives are defined in part by the casual hookup.
Last year, the company went so far as to trademark “technosexual,” anticipating it could become a buzzword for marketing to millennials, the roughly 80 million Americans born from 1982 to 1995. A typical line from the press materials for CK in2u goes like this: “She likes how he blogs, her texts turn him on. It’s intense. For right now.”
She likes how he blogs, her texts turn him on. BARF! This drivel is just not computing in my brain. I refuse to believe they are serious about trying to market this to the blogging crowd!

It’s weird being reduced to a few sound bits but to expand on my last point. While I like to think that blogging is mainstream, it’s not the case and for now there are many people who will believe in the Calvin Klein version of the Internet generation.
Buzzfeed has been tracking the best Technosexuals links across the web.

Diaper Shorts - BuzzFeed
I got linked on BuzzFeed for my post about Sienna Miller doing the diaper short all wrong.
BuzzFeed is a trend site that combs the Internet to find what is buzzworthy. They post site links to these buzzworthy topics. I am among different bloggers who all talked about the diaper pants fad. I am a fan of the fashion buzz section. Like the diaper pants trend, the turban is another trend that I don’t want to see in real life.
BuzzFeed distinguishes what is actually interesting from what is merely hyped. We only feature movies, music, fashion, ideas, technology, and culture that are on the rise and worth your time.
How it works
1. Buzz Detection
We automatically detect new buzz by crawling 50,000 of the very best web sites, blogs, and news sources. Then our technology crunches the raw data from these sites to identify new buzz that’s just starting to spread. We developed the technology to find new things just as they start accelerating in popularity and provoking interesting conversations. Our technology is also supplemented by a network of human taste-makers and tips submitted by BuzzFeed readers. These savvy humans can spot subtle trends our robots might miss.2. Editorial Commentary
The moment we detect new buzz, it appears in a special terminal interface used by our editors. The terminal is a sophisticated interface that shows trend data from multiple sources. Our editors are experts at using the terminal to publish a quick summary that highlights the newest and most interesting buzz on the front page of BuzzFeed.com. The editorial process transforms a messy jumble of buzz data and submissions into a quick, fun summary of the hottest new buzz.3. Buzz Tracking
Finally we track the buzz as it spreads through word-of-mouth and blogs. Our trend pages link to the most interesting commentary, videos, news articles, and debate — so you can track a movie, band, person, or idea as it grows in popularity. For each item on BuzzFeed, you can watch the number of links grow as we link to more people fueling the buzz on their own sites and blogs. When something we are tracking gets especially popular, we bring it back to the front page of the site to show how far it has spread since it was first detected.
Haramaki, get your belly warmers
Reader submissions are a beautiful thing. I thank reader JP from blogUT.ca for this little fashion nugget from Japan, Haramaki.

Haramaki translates to belly warmer. Traditionally used for abdominal health purposes they are quickly becoming a fashion trend. After my initial WTF reaction to the Haramaki, I’m starting to really like them. The prints are great and they are perfect for layering. I love the look in the picture posted above and that is what sold me on the Haramaki. Pingmag.jp has more pictures of Haramaki style that you should check out.

I wonder how long it will take this trend to make it over to the West.
