Holt Renfrew x Canada Goose Toque x Polar Bears International

Holt Renfrew has partnered with Canada Goose and Polar Bears International to created a limited edition toque. A portion of the proceeds goes to Polar Bears International. The Toronto Uniform crowd will probably want their matching Canada Goose toque in either black or red. It retails for $50 and are available at Holt Renfrew stores across the country. Previously, Holt Renfrew x Marc by Marc Jacobs x VisionSpring came together to create a limited edition tote with a portion of proceeds going to VisionSpring. Holt’s sent me a black toque and even thought I don’t own a Canada Goose jacket I think the toque is nice. It has a merino wool exterior and a fleece interior. It has a good shape on my head for a beanie type toque. I don’t really wear that style because you need hair to pull it off. The toque is very warm and I can’t wait to see how it does in colder weather. The Bloor Street store has a large in store display for the toques that is …

TFW Spring Summer 2013 – Holt Renfrew

The tile of this post is a bit of a misnomer because Holt Renfrew didn’t show any looks from the spring summer 2013 season. Instead they opted for a showcase of merchandise Canadian and international that is available in stores now. I don’t have much to say about in general since these clothes originally went down the catwalk in March. “Tonight we’re proud to present a special take on ‘Canadian Catwalk’ — celebrating Holt Renfrew as the destination for those who love fashion”, said Alix Box, Senior Vice President of Sales & Marketing for Holt Renfrew. “Our runway showcases this unique moment in our 175 year history with an inspiring collection of contemporary and designer fashions to wear right now.”(source: Press Release) Holts opted to hold a breakfast fashion show that showcased their Canadian designer’s spring summer 2013 collections. I missed this cause it was too early in the morning, ha ha. The show had about 65 looks and they had all the best models ripping through those looks. It didn’t seem like a long …

Holts 175th – The Magenta Collection

Holt Renfrew is turning 175 this year. It’s amazing that this retailer has been around since 1837. Holt Renfrew started as a hat shop in Quebec City and over the years developed and expanded across Canada. In the 1930’s, Holts began it’s luxury focus and even welcomed Christian Dior in 1947 when he launched the “New Look”. The company was under foreign ownership for many years and in 1986 it was purchase by The Westons moving Holt Renfrew into the company it is today. Holt’s partnered with many of it’s luxury brands to create the limited edition, Magenta Collection. It was cool to see some Canadian faces in the mix like Smythe, Naked & Famous, Mackage, Moose Knuckles and Canada Goose adding their magenta inspired pieces. There are a number of limited edition items available outside of the ones I’ve posted here. You can see the entire Magenta Collection online at Holtrenfrew.com. images: courtesy of Holt Renfrew

Moncler S Fall Winter 2012 – 2013

Japanese designer Chitose Abe of Sacai has another great Moncler S collection for the fall winter 2012 – 2013 season. I’m dreaming of a winter jacket right now. M The fall winter 2012 – 2013 collection is described as: Moncler S is a project which this season is set to become even broader for an interpretation of the Moncler world that is original and contemporary. Little coats and capes open into large flared and enveloping skirts. Diamond quilting effects and quilted rolls alternate in the same garment, providing movement to surfaces and modelling the figure. Careful research goes into materials that underscore the purity of the design. Ultra soft deperlant flannel in prized New Zealand merino wool is both waterproof and stain-proof. Extreme attention is also lavished on the details with the bell and flower-bottom sleeve as unmistakeable style code of Moncler S. I love that these designs break the mold of the traditional down filled jacket. After seeing the rise of Canada Goose and others over several years, I’m thoroughly bored of the silhouette. …

Ask A Geek – Canadian Brands Making Winter Coats – Updated November 13, 2012

Sometimes readers ask me questions. If they are of value to all my readers I post them online. If you have a question, please feel free to submit it using the contact form. I’ll definitely do my best to answer it. I want – I got reader @ThebergeSwim tweeted: @ThebergeSwim - @geekigirl I’m looking 4 a warm winter coat Preferably fashionable & NOT black. Would like to support local designer #ThebergemovestoToronto Me – @ThebergeSwim budget? @ThebergeSwim - @geekigirl four to six hundred. Possibly a lil more if totally awesome. Fashionable and functional are trade off that has to be made for a Canadian winter. I tend to side with function during this time of year. My recommendation is buy a long down jacket so you don’t have to layer as much. However, here’s a selection of Canadian companies with winter jackets and coats that will cover both spectrums and between.  Some of these companies might not have fall offerings online yet, but should soon. RUDSAK – Lots of leather options here. Montreal based but has a store on …

Amanda Lew Kee Fall Winter 2011 – 2012

Amanda Lew Kee’s fall winter 2011 – 2012 collection started out so strong. The first third of the collection was very promising. Unfortunately, the middle part of the collection was a little lost and the last third of the show was a risky gamble with colour that didn’t pay off.   There was a lot of good elements going on the in the collection but they got lost among the unfocused elements. In my perfect world Amanda would have continued to explore the silhouettes she opened with in fabrics that weren’t metallic.  The rule about taking off a piece of jewellery before you leave the house applies to everything in life.  In this case, less would have been more. The collection was in desperate need of an edit.  The leggings and jersey tank dress are too American Apparel to be on the runway.  Those looks weren’t show material for me but the things you show to buyers in a showroom.  The flower embellishment left me puzzled.  Was it a deliberate design feature or some last-minute …

Holt Renfrew Fall 2009 – 2010 Menswear Media Preview

Holt Renfrew Fall 2009 – 2010 Menswear Media Preview You have read about my adventures at the Holt Renfrew Fall 2009 – 2010 Womenswear Media Preview. I took a lot of pictures of things that appealed to me. Well the Men get the same treatment because I attended the Fall 2009 – 2010 Menswear Media Preview. That was a treat. I love menswear and wish I could include more of it in my coverage. It’s just impossible to be able to incorporate anything but the stray menswear post like this. The preview was a smaller affair when compared to the Womens. You realize the lack of true menswear media in Toronto. There was some overlap in the attendees but there were a lot of people I wasn’t familiar with. Barbara Atkin, Vice President, Fashion Direction for Holt Renfrew spoke briefly before Lanita Layton, Vice President, GMM Menswear took the podium. She spoke about menswear trends and how the economy has changed men’s style. The banker look is out and men are trying to distance themselves …

i got: A CDN Spirit Down Jacket

It was starting to get cold in Toronto and I needed a puffy down jacket. I have a lot of wool jackets that require way too many layers in the winter. I wanted a jacket that I could wear without a lot of layers. My ski jacket is down, but it’s not long enough. It happened to be Buy Local Week when I started to I decided that I would buy a Canadian made jacket. My choices were slim, Canada Goose or CDN Spirit. I decided on the Cdn Spirit because Canada Goose is just too expensive, double the price. I’m very, very happy with my purchase. The jacket is super warm and the fleece cuffs are a nice touch and keeps the wind from blowing up my sleeves. Cdn Spirit is carried by Sporting Life and Holly’s Fashions. I got mine at the Holly’s Fashion shop in the TD Centre. The picture isn’t the best because I’m pretty lazy right now and can’t be bothered to take one.
