So, I just joined a new gym. It was a rather traumatizing experience. My old gym, The Wellington, was my hangout for about 5 years. I knew the staff and many of the squash players there. Extreme Fitness took over after The Sports Clubs of Canada went tits up. At first, I figured they would keep the squash program considering how many people were at the gym for squash. I was wrong, they are dumping the squash program to add internet lounges and stupid yoga studios. I was really pissed off, so I left for the Adelaide Club.
The Adelaide Club is the type of club the Wellington only dreams of being (Yes, I’m really bitter). It’s much cleaner with better facilities and they have squash courts that won’t be going anywhere anytime soon. The owner is a big squash fan and player. The club actually had about 12 courts back in the day. To the Wellington’s credit, they did have the some great squash courts. So good that I ignored the rest of the club’s faults.
Well it’s weird being the new kid on the block at the Adelaide so I decided to attend the 30th anniversary party hoping to meet some of the members and basically party my ass off. I accomplished both things that night and had a great time. None of these pictures include me. I was gone when they were taken; off to a birthday party. I did hear from a little birdy that the party went on till the wee hours of the morning though.
I feel a lot more comfortable at the Adelaide now. I guess stumbling and dancing around the place drunk has that effect. Now, I just have to get over the fact that Shawn from Bustle is a squash player there. I’m pretty sure both of us never expected to see each other there.
The venue was draped with white cloth and had weird ethereal lighting. We drank, ate and chatted with the Motorola models. The crowd was a little strange at first, mostly suits and their significant others. The atmosphere changed once our friends started to slowly stream in.
The music was great from the start and DJ Steve Aoki was coming up. I admit that prior to him hitting the decks I haven’t had anything nice to say about him; another L.A. hipster blah, blah. However, I had a change of heart after he begun. He played great music, seemed unpretentious and professional. No, I didn’t talk to him, just observations. Anyone that can make me dance my ass off with great friends around is amazing in my book. Read the rest of this entry »
Fritz Helder & the Phantoms performed at their CD release party last night and rocked the Great Hall with a flawless, awe inspiring performance. These guys are going to be big. If you weren’t there last night, you ain’t vogue baby. In my humble opinion this is the only relevant band in fashion right now, period.
I spotted a lot of fashion people taking part: my designer crush that I never talk to Jeremy Laing, Krane designer Ken Chow, one half of Juma and I want - I got fan Jamil, fashion hero Sonja Andic of TSF, industry insider Gail McInnes, the very sweet Shinan Govani of the National Post, stylist and birthday girl Jessica Tjeng and Project Runway Canada alum Michael Hatley. I’m sure there were others too, I either didn’t know who you were or I didn’t see you.
After the show was the after party at the Social where we were treated to another show Village People style. It was awesome. I want a big feather headdress now!
Their CD is out now and it’s awesome. Pick it up and then get you ass to the next live show. You won’t be disappointed.

It’s Thursday night, and I’m at the opening of Peter Gatien’s Circa Nightclub. New York’s club king is hoping to enchant Toronto and the world with four floors of art, technology, cinema and pop culture mishmash. The line snakes around the building but, with VIP access, there is no waiting.
