Adidas x Star Wars Spring 2010

If you haven’t heard Adidas is doing a Star Wars collection. People are going going crazy for the adidas x Star Wars Spring 2010. I’m liking the graphic tshirts a lot. I’m also a fan of the Tie Fighter, Stormtrooper and Millennium Falcon sneakers. See the full Star Wars X Adidas Spring 2010 Lookbook at Sneaker Freaker. Livestock has received the first drop of shoes and will be carrying the Stormtrooper and Vader sneakers. I’ve heard that they will also be available for sale online in January.

Mark Fast Cocktail at Ame

Mark Fast was in town last week for a Spring 2010 preview. I wasn’t able to attend the preview during the day but I went to Ame for a cocktails in his honour. Mark is from Manitoba originally. He studied at Seneca College in Ontario briefly before going to London. He attended the prestigious Central Saint Martins and got his BA and MA. Mark designs by hand on a domestic knitting machine. His work is formed onto the body as he knits, and he has devised innovative stitching techniques, blending lycra with viscose, angora or wool. He is inspired by the endless possibilities of lycra yarns, sculpting areas of tension and areas of volume over the body. Mark’s fascination with the cinema drives his creative process as he channels the energy of the characters who inspire him into his knits. Obsessed with texture, Mark’s most recent work explores the relationship of garments to the wearers body. I didn’t realize the work that goes into a Mark Fast dress until I saw the models milling about …

i want: Shwood Eyewear

Sunglasses made of wood, that’s Shwood Eyewear. I was first visually taken with these classically shaped sunglasses. I loved the use of wood as the medium. It’s not used for sunglasses often, so it’s a bit fresh feeling. The price was reasonable too, $115 US for polarized lens (shipping to Toronto makes the price $141 approx). East Indian Rosewood – Wood tone varies from very dark brown to black with fine, closely spaced dark veins and white lines. Grain structure is straight and tight. Zebrawood – Wood tone varies from light golden-yellow to pale golden-brown, with narrow veining of dark streaks giving the wood a zebra-stripe appearance. Shwood Eyewear is handcrafted.  The gorgeous wood comes from various plantations across Africa that are using sustainable methods. A simple experiment with nature. Born from the limb of a Mandrone tree, a rusty pair of cabinet hinges, and lenses from the corner store, Shwood has been a curious endeavor from the beginning. An endeavor to create a product that encompasses the individuality and uniqueness that can only be …

G.V.G.V. Spring 2010 Jewellery

I was trolling the some Tokyo Spring 2010 collection photos and discovered this Japanese label called G.V.G.V. Designer Mug was born in 1971. After graduating in 1999 from the Kuwasawa Design School Mug laid down the foundations of her own brand that has come to be known as G.V.G.V. Mug’s world is represented by a mix of femininity and masculinity, with free sensitivity that is present in every season’s collection. G.V.G.V. has now become one of the most attractive Tokyo fashion label. G.V.G.V. has also injected its creativity into other fashion brands through design collaborations. In collaborating with UNIQLO’s designer’s invitation for their 2007 spring and summer collection and also producing for UT, the T-shirt for concept of UNIQLO t-shirts from 2008 spring and summer. There were a few pieces of the spring 2010 collection that I liked but it was the jewellery that peaked my interest. There are a few online retails for G.V.G.V but no shops outside of Japan. images: eastnews.ru

geekiviews: Test Driving Shu Uemura False Eyelashes

I went to the Toronto Meets Tokyo Shu Uemura event at Holt Renfrew a couple weekends ago. I was treated to a make up application that included Shu Uemura lashes. I was going to find out why these lashes are so raved about. TORONTO MEETS TOKYO shu uemura will come to life this Saturday at Holt Renfrew; our principal makeup artist Taca Ozawa will be there to complete artistic makeup for the women who dare to try! Lashes application will be offered, as well as sketches done by a Japanese Manga Artist. The event will take place in the centre court at Holt Renfrew, with models dressed in kimonos and made up with artistic makeup. Taca Ozawa wasn’t my makeup artist. Stupid me didn’t ask/remember her name because I loved what she did. I chose something pretty simple for lashes. The Luxe Black style were huge but not over the top. I didn’t feel like feathers or sparkles at the time. Inspired by the mink false eyelashes custom-ordered by celebrities, this synthetic version features a …

My time at the Queen’s Business Forum on the Fashion Industry

I’ve been lucky enough that people have asked me to speak at their events this year. I’m at four appearances and counting. One of those events was the Queen’s Business Forum on the Fashion Industry which took place the weekend before LG Fashion Week. I received an email from Shaine sometime in the summer. I had never heard of QBFFI before so I did some investigating. I learned that many big players in the Canadian fashion scene were previous speakers .  People like Barbara Aktin, Robin Kay, Chip Wilson and Harry Rosen. This years line up included Rita Silvan, Linda Lundstrom, Allison Gordon, Stacey McKenzie, Mosha Lundstrom Halbert, Karen Cleveland and Julie Magnan. I was really honoured with the request. I’m still amazed that anyone cares what I have to say. So, I made my way up to Kingston on VIA with The Oracle who was there for moral support. We barely made the train and I literally mean by seconds. The train attendant had pulled up the stairs and I managed to get him …

I can’t wait to see the Hublot Depeche Mode Watches

Luxury watchmaker Hublot is creating 12 “pop” versions of their very popular Big Bang series with one of my favourite bands, Depeche Mode. Each one of a kind watch will feature a different Depeche Mode album cover. They will be sold at auction with proceeds going to the Teenage Cancer Trust. One of the most influential bands on the international electropop scene, this will be Depeche Mode’s first ever concert at the Royal Albert Hall. The band’s members are thrilled at the prospect. Not just because of the prestigious venue, but also because of the cause they have chosen to support. The event will raise funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust, an organization which provides help to adolescents with cancer in terms of treatment, research, education, family support and specialist diagnosis (www.teenagecancertrust.org). To mark this special occasion, Hublot and Depeche Mode have decided to create a series of 12 unique watches, each of which will feature one of the band’s album covers on its dial. The watches will be sold at an auction at the …

Toywatch Spring 2010 Preview

I was invited to see the Toy Watch preview awhile back. I hadn’t heard of Toy Watch at the time of the invite so I did some investigation. Toy Watch started in Milan and came to North America in 2006. Their whole motto is combing high design with accessible materials, namely plastic, rubber and other non luxury materials. The preview was a vehicle to showcase the new Toywatch Jelly collection. The Jelly is made of soft, pliable silicone and the watch face is interchangeable. Every colour of the rainbow is available in super bright hues. You can mix and match with possibilities of over 72 different versions.  The Jelly’s retail for $250.00. I was super lucky for this preview and was given a Toywatch. It took me a very long time to finally decide on the Toy Watch Neon Chronograph Plasteramics in Atomic Orange.  I love Neon. I loved it in the 80s as a kid and still love it now.  I describe Toywatch to people as the Swatch of the 2000s. Check out the gallery …

Celine Spring 2010 is now at Holt Renfrew

The impeccable Celine Spring 2010 has hit the floor at Holt Renfrew, the exclusive retailer in Canada. I had to check it out myself. The clothing lives up to the pictures. Everything was just so beautiful, flawless and drool worthy. It’s expensive as all hell too. Phoebe, you know how to cut, it’s disgusting! I could wear it all. Just to refresh your memory here is the Celine Spring 2010 video. images: the Fashion Spot

Jason Wu Pre-Fall 2010

There are a couple of looks from the Jason Wu Pre-Fall 2010 collection that has me interested. The weird knot detail on these two first pieces are intirguing to me.  I really would love to see it in person and get a look at the construction.  The rest of the collection is your standard fare for Jason, short cute dresses and coats. images: the Fashion Spot

Jonathan created an amazing zine recently and I immediately ordered it. This book was published to commemorate the 50th fashematics equation created for Zawada’s fashematics.com blog. Jonathan created this zine of his favourite looks from the Spring/Summer 2010 runway shows, reinterpreting the models as part of either a horde of zombies or an army of robots. It is a flip-flop zine that reads inwards from both covers beginning with either a Zombie Karl Lagerfeld or Android Lagerfeld sticker. Features clothes by Prada, Bernhard Willhelm, Balenciaga, Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, Chanel and more… $16 (AUD) for international shipping. BUY IT HERE! geekiviews: Nippies by Bristols 6

I received a package containing Nippies by Bristols 6 of various styles from rock-it promotions the other day. Nippies are exactly what you think they are, nipple covers. A few years ago, I had tried a couple brands but never liked the result which was puckering. I decided to give these a shot because maybe someone improved on what was happening then. I was right. Bristol 6 has made some nice ones. The first time I wore a pair of plain black heart shaped Nippies. I decided to leave the black lace heart ones at home. You couldn’t see them in the dress. I was more worrying about having a wardrobe malfunction with my one shouldered dress. Proof is in the photo as I wore them to Bloor Street Entertains. I totally forgot I was wearing them and there was no puckering. I also received some silver star shaped Nippies. One was a matte finish and the other was sparkly. I tried the matte finish ones and I liked these better than the heart shaped …
