i got: A Dress by Erdem

You have seen photos of my Erdem dress during |FAT|. It was a super find at the Hazel Liquidation Sale. It was 90% off coming in at a cool $73. It’s from the Fall 2008 collection. The show has other garments in the same print, but not this simple dress design. Erdem is known for his prints and they are breathtaking. I could frame this dress and be very happy looking at the print, but it’s much more fun to wear. Erdem can be found at The Room in The Bay. |FAT| 2009 Day 4

I attended [FAT], Toronto Alternative Arts and Fashion Week, at the Distillery District last week. It was the final day of a very a long week. There are a lot of designers to get through. So most of my reviews will be brief using word association. I’ll expand on a collection when necessary. Each day has get it’s own post, read the previous reports: FAT Day 1, FAT Day 2, FAT Day 3. Day 4 |BEYOND| |FAT| takes a glance at where we are headed and how we can reinvent ourselves. Artists seek to experiment, play, and dream. They push barriers and challenge conventions. Imagination and the extremes of invention shape possibilities for the future. LOVAS Wesley Badanjak – lovely colour scheme, houndstooth, teal, office dressing, great pants. The collection was very well constructed; I have to admit it was quite lovely to see. Wesley is a David Dixon protege and the collection looked kinda like, umm, David Dixon. I dubbed it David Light. That being said, I could see myself in a number of …

|FAT| 2009 Day 3

I attended [FAT], Toronto Alternative Arts and Fashion Week, at the Distillery District last week. It was four days of music, art and fashion. It was a long week, so very long. I thought of bailing on many days of FAT, but I never want to miss any of the fashion shows. It’s always an internal battle. There are a lot of designers to get through. So most of my reviews will be brief using word association. I’ll expand on a collection when necessary. Each day will get it’s own post. For Day 3 you’ll notice a significant decrease in the quality of the photography. Well that’s because yours truly was taking the photos this day. My photographer, Paul Baik, was taking the day off. My picture are horrible, even more horrible than normal because I was using a Nikon S230 loaner which I’m not enjoying all that much. Don’t worry, Paul is back for Day 4. Day 3 |GUTTER| Unsettling. Shifting. Extreme. How do we survive in these volatile times? |FAT| explores art & …

|FAT| 2009 Day 2

I attended [FAT], Toronto Alternative Arts and Fashion Week, at the Distillery District last week. It was four days of music, art and fashion. It was a long week, so very long. I thought of bailing on many days of FAT, but I never want to miss any of the fashion shows. It’s always an internal battle. There are a lot of designers to get through. So most of my reviews will be brief using word association. I’ll expand on a collection when necessary. Each day will get it’s own post. Amanda Rose – Felt like two collections as the second half of the show turned into jersey lingerie which I didn’t enjoy. I did enjoy the knits and linen pieces. Cherry Blossom – 80s, Rad Hourani, Rodarte, I really enjoyed the shredded leggings Romandin by Cristina Sabaiduc – Woven fabrics, rope and dresses with magnets and iron filings details, amazing! Deadly Nightshades – Cycling theme that fits with their girl gang. Best colour scheme, best use of man meat for the runway. Paper People …

|FAT| 2009 Day 1

I attended [FAT], Toronto Alternative Arts and Fashion Week, at the Distillery District last week. It was four days of music, art and fashion. It was a long week, so very long. I thought of bailing on many days of FAT, but I never want to miss any of the fashion shows. It’s always an internal battle. There are a lot of designers to get through. So most of my reviews will be brief using word association. I’ll expand on a collection when necessary. Each day will get it’s own post. Day 1 |HOME| Designers and artists explore the place which is most familiar and known to us. The night looks at the meaning of home through culture and history, romance and beauty, power and subtlety, sexuality and domesticity. Fashion Whore – 50s, Vibrant prints, candy, nautical, baby doll dresses. Diepo – Boudoir, femme fatale, midriff, 40s, black, feminine Katrina Tuttle – houndstooth, party dresses, bubble hem, mix of textures with some unnecessary detail in places. The designer modeled in her own show, I liked …

Buy Design 2009 - Post Party Pictures by Raymund Galsim

Breaking Down The Buy Design Outfit

I was very impressed with my Buy Design Outfit that I thought I should dedicate a post to it. This the best full body shot I have at the moment. I happen to love this photo also. The fur caplet is Bear. Yes, you read that right Bear. I don’t own it. It was rented from a great vintage shop call The Refinery (588 Markham St.). I enjoyed every second wearing that caplet. It also was the focal point of my outfit. The top is Greta Constantine. You can’t see the back, but it’s basically non-existent on this shirt. The leggings are Member’s Only. The shoes are Nine West, a Balenciaga knockoff I’m told. I lived in these sandals last summer and plan on doing the same this summer. Purple Clutch is YSL. The feathered headpiece is from KC Hats (998 Bathurst St). I never imagined that the headpiece would work without hair, but I was proven wrong in the studio and I left the studio with it in a bag. images: Raymund Galsim, Gail …

geekiviews: J.R. Watkins Lip Tint

My good friends at Brill Communications also send me some J.R. Watkins Lip Tint. Basically J.R. Watkins Lip Tint is their famous lip balm infused with colour. The result is something that feels and applies like a lip balm but gives your lips a nice shade. Each tint is formulated with 100% natural beeswax and Shea butter. There are four shades to choose from: Tickled Pink, Strike-a-rose, Simply Mauve-lous and Berry Charming. Tickled Pink and Strike-a-rose were much too pink for my complexion and I stuck with the Simply Mauve-lous and Berry Charming. I really like that the Lip Tint acts like a lip balm and lipstick. I like a hint of colour on my lips and don’t wear much lipstick because I find it’s too much for me. You can layer the colour on as much as you like with the Lip Tint and I like that. The fact that it’s a lip balm means that your lips are keep moist and aren’t drying out. Available for $5.99 at various retailers in the city.

geekiviews: Nailene Nail Accessories

My good friends at Brill Communications decided to send me some samples of Nailene. I couldn’t bring myself to use them and this is the first geekiviews post I’m making without trying the product. I have to admit, I’ve always been a little frightened of artificial nails. I put it out there on twitter that I was afraid of artificial nails and had a couple people reply back with horror stories. I also read the instructions and the removal of the nails which involves soaking in acetone. I really didn’t want to go through it. The artificial nails themselves are not tacky. They are in the french manicure style which is always classic and not obnoxious. I will overlook the nail art that was included with the Toenail set. I had no idea there was artificial toenails too. A friend of mine, who is way more into this beauty stuff, told me that Nailene is the best brand of at home artificial nail kits. She had these tips for creating the perfect set of nails. …

Buy Design 2009 – Post Party Pictures

Buy Design, the fundraiser for WindFall Clothing Service took place on Saturday. The theme was Space, particularly Barbarella’s version of space. Think 60’s mod, block colours, go-go boots, short skirts and tights. I decided to channel The Great Tyrant who was played by Anita Pallenberg. This was the result. Here I am getting interviewed for what I think is the Space TV show, The Circuit. It will air at 7:30PM on Friday, April 24, 2009. I’m still fiddling with a loner camera and it wasn’t cooperating on Saturday. I’ve relied on photos from friends. Enjoy.

Belvedere vs Bustle Fall 2009 Bags

Belvedere Vodka and Bustle Clothing collaborated during LG Fashion Week. Nine Canadian graffiti artists were tapped to create bags for Bustle’s Fall 09 collection, featuring the aesthetic of Belvedere’s new IX bottle. The bags are pretty cool and I thought I’d share them. I thought about linking to the new Belvedere product but the website offends my sensibilities so you’ll have to google it for yourself.

I Love Rick Owens… A Lot!!!

My obsession with Rick Owens, the man and the clothes, has driven me to make this post. There have been many Rick Owens interviews and videos on the internet in the last month. SHOWstudio created a Rick Owens Portrait. It’s a combination of video and images. It is lovely. Be sure to click the link to see the videos Providing an intimate portrait of Rick Owens in his own words and his own clothing, this filmic diptych, shot live during the action on set, explores Nick Knight’s monograph of an American fashion legend The images, also part of the portrait, are from Nick Knight’s editorial for Arena Homme Plus. The Showstudio site has more images, I’ve selected my favourites to post here. The top one is now tiled on my desktop. 🙂 There are some interviews online. Vice Magazine interviewed Rick for their fashion issue. Hint Fashion Magazine Blog had a video interview with Rick. And the Rules of Style: Rick Owens from Mens.style.com.
