I talked about changing up my shoe game but Converse keeps calling me back. This collaboration with Maison Martin Margiela is pretty awesome.

“Converse is thrilled to partner with Maison Martin Margiela. The collection perfectly embodies each
brand’s spirit of individuality and self-expression unifying Converse and Margiela’s conviction of
unleashing creativity,” says Matt Sleep, Converse Senior First String Designer.(source: Press Release)

The first-time Converse Maison Martin Margiela collaboration features the Chuck Taylor All Star and the Jack Purcell sneakers, each completely hand-painted in Maison Martin Margiela’s iconic white paint. Covering all canvas, eyelets, laces and soles, they naturally crack and shed their outer coat of paint to reveal the original colors beneath.(source: Press Release)

“The Maison has always been obsessed with white; it is used as a layer to give an incognito feeling. A sort of poetry, with the passage of time, the shoe asserts itself,” says Maison Martin Margiela.(source: Press Release)

I want – I got Holiday Gift Guide – Part 1

So, this year I lost my mind and I decided to create a holiday gift guide. I’m usually anti-gift guides because I’m not much of a Christmas person and gift guides are a shit ton of work. I don’t know what made me change my mind this year but here we are. People have told me this is a good idea, so I hope you find it helpful or amusing.

This is the part one of four in the I want – I got Gift Guide series. I have so many favourite things I wanted to include. This gift guide is very much I want – I got. You’ll see things I want, things I got and other obsessions.  Some things are affordable and some aren’t but I’ve tried to mix it up. The list covers fashion, beauty, electronics, art, toys and booze. Basically, all the items on the gift guide are I want – I got approved.

So, join me on this exploration of things I would love to see under my tree at Christmas.

Previously I posted about the newly release fragrance called (untitled) by Maison Martin Margiela.

The scent is, as Martin wished, a ‘green flash’ – an olfactory equivalent and translation of the blank canvas and cleansing visual signature ‘white’ of Margiela. It is at once, clean, fresh and astringent, eschewing the floral hallmarks of contemporary perfumes and harking back to 1970’s trends, such as Chanel’s Nº19

There is now a short video created for the fragrance.

(untitled) scents
* Top Notes: Galbanum essence, Box green, Bitter orange blossom absolute
* Middle Notes: Lentiscus resinoid, Jasmine, Galbanum resinoid
* Base notes: Musk, Cedar, Incense resinoid

The blog Coute Que Coute has an interesting post about his adventures at MMM HQ for the launch of (untitled).

ELLE Decoration Suite by Jean Paul Gaultier

ELLE Decoration Suite by Jean Paul Gaultier

Jean Paul Gaultier is collaborating with French furniture brand Roche Bobois. It will be released in the second half of the year. Gaultier was invited to renovate Elle Decoration suite which is situated on the top floor of the Cité de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine in Paris. It was a former apartment designed by Jacques Carlu, the architect behind the Palais Chaillot in the 1930s.

ELLE Decoration Suite by Jean Paul Gaultier

“Clothes are my job, and as I only know how to dress, I dressed this ELLE Decoration suite in the Cité de l’architecture & du patrimoine, with various touches that already grace my collections.
First, the marine touch.
Navy stripes are deployed and deformed on the walls, they are draped and curl around the furniture, a little “marine morphing” lounge that disappears in the white canvas.
Then comes the green touch. Nature opens its doors !
Plants are invited in, a garden is printed on the walls! Ivy weaves into the sofa; lichen grows over the woven chairs in the shade of a tree, and moss, like green velvet, carpets the stone, plants tumble down in steps, hiding in a net.
The nude touch, satin skin :
Fabric unfolds on the walls of the bedroom and forms a powdery velum on the ceiling. The corset dress of a fairground doll becomes the bed’s giant quilt. In this room, lingerie, a lace that fishnets on the carpet and is mirrored in the window panes.
For the reflective touch, the terrace !
Paris and the Eiffel tower resonate and multiply in facets shaped like diamonds, jewels, accessories for the sky and clouds, which play on a chequered mirror on the floor, the shiny lining of a cement grey coating.
Clothes have gone from one state to another as we pass from one room to another.”

I found a video on elle.fr about the Jean Paul Gaultier project. It’s in french but you get a good look at the rooms. The apartment was also decorated by Maison Martin Margiela in 2009 and Christian Lacroix in 2008. I’ve also dug up video from elle.fr about those individual projects too. Since they all autoplay I’ve included them under the cut.

(untitled) is the first perfume by Maison Martin Margiela which was three years in the making. The scent itself doesn’t appeal to me but I’m very interested in its presentation.

The scent is, as Martin wished, a ‘green flash’ – an olfactory equivalent and translation of the blank canvas and cleansing visual signature ‘white’ of Margiela. It is at once, clean, fresh and astringent, eschewing the floral hallmarks of contemporary perfumes and harking back to 1970’s trends, such as Chanel’s Nº19.

The final chosen scent for (untitled) was selected by Martin himself, and went directly into production by L’Oreal (without market testing) after only three samples were created at Givaudan by Perfumer Daniela Andrier, who muses:

“I know that perfume must not follow a fashion or a trend, but an instinct. This first perfume expresses a femininity which does not fit into formal categories. I am grateful to Maison Martin Margiela for whispering the formula for this perfume into my ear.”

I love the idea of a scent with cedar in it, but musky perfumes never work with my chemistry. They always seem okay in theory but doesn’t smell good when applied. I’m a floral girl for sure.

I love the look of the perfume. Martin Margiela and creative director Fabien Baron worked together to come up with the design. It encompasses the look of the 19th century and the MMM signature white.

“The development and creation of the first perfume from Maison Martin Margiela has been a marvellous experience. L’Oreal has given us all possible support in guiding us into this new world. Expressing our creativity and revealing our identity through such a special and unique essence is something we have wanted to do for a very long time. It fits in well with the consistent quality of our artistic universe, and is a natural counterpart to our collections, architectural projects, accessories and so on. We are extremely proud of the result, in all its aspects. We will waste no time in starting work on a new project, with a team of such talent and inspiration at our disposal.” – Maison Martin Margiela.

I guess this project was completed before the man left the house this year. (untitled) will be available exclusively at Colette on January 25. It will be rolled out to the US initially through Maison Martin Margiela stores in March. Within the first year they expect to have 500 outlets worldwide selling the perfume.

(untitled) Eau de parfum comes in comes in 30ml,  50ml and 75ml sizes and costs $79.70, $115.90 and $144.90 USD respectively. There is also a 200-ml body lotion and a 200-ml shower gel each at $43.45 USD.
