Chanel Les 4 Ombres

Chanel Les 4 Ombres
Chanel Les 4 Ombres

This week I got to preview the new eye shadow palette from Chanel at the Holt Renfrew Bloor Street. Chanel Les 4 Ombres takes inspiration from the classic Chanel tweed fabric. The colours for each eye shadow palette are literally based on thread colours from previous Chanel tweed combinations. There are six combinations available:
Tissé Vénitien – A tweed that reveals the mysteries of Venice
Tissé Mademoiselle – A tweed in the colours of dawn
Tissé Cambon – A very feminine tweed that accentuates the style of Chanel
Tissé Gabrielle – A tweed that borrows its grays from a stormy sky
Tissé Vendôme – A sparkling tweed that reflects the City of Lights
Tissé Riviera – A tweed with hints of Southern France

All the colour combinations are beautiful but I love Tissé Cambon, Tissé Riviera, Tissé Vénitien and Tissé Gabrielle. Chanel had one of their amazing makeup artists on hand to test drive Tissé Vénitien on me. Great makeup artists have a way of making you feel amazing and excited about a product and this woman had that in spades. She transformed my eyes in a matter of minutes and took the time to show me each step. She made it look so easy to apply. Easy enough that she convinced me that I really need to get with the eye shadow program. “Miss geekigirl”, she said, “don’t worry about perfection, you’re blending it anyways.” These words stuck with me. I love eye makeup but I’m pretty much scared to try it out. My hands aren’t steady and I have no artistic abilities.

After my session with the Chanel makeup artist, I feel like I could recreate the look. I’m going to be practicing with the Tissé Vénitien gift I received.

Chanel Les 4 Ombres

Holt Renfrew Bloor Street is having a Les 4 Ombres discovery event this week. Chanel specialists are available to answer all your questions about the collection. Also, the Chanel mascara vending machine is back until the end of next week. It’s super fun to play with; all you need to do is buy one of the Le Volume mascaras. Don’t worry; you won’t be disappointed as Chanel gets my mascara thumbs up.

I’m in the Toronto Life Stylebook Fall 2013 Edition

Toronto Life Stylebook Fall 2013
Toronto Life Stylebook Fall 2013

I have a little feature in the Fall 2013 Toronto Life Stylebook. They approached me to discuss my beauty routine and what new products I’m looking forward to this fall. I give shout outs to some of my favourite beauty brands and retailers: Lancome, Chanel, Essie, Givenchy, Marni, Balenciaga, Philosophy, Concepts Salon & Spa and the Miraj Hammam Spa at The Shangri-La Hotel.

Anita Clarke by Judit García-Talavera
Anita Clarke by Judit García-Talavera for the Toronto Life Stylebook

The most surprising thing about the feature was this illustration of me. I was completely stunned. If you remember, I hated the last illustration Toronto Life commissioned of me.

Judit García-Talavera is an illustrator based in Barcelona, Spain. She is absolutely incredible and I’m not just saying that because she created a kick ass illustration of me. She’s worked with clients such as Marie Claire Spain, Telegraph’s Stella magazine, Bloomingdales, ELLE China, Teen Vogue, Gilt Group, ELLE Girl Japan, Harper’s Bazaar Spain, Stylesight, Rolling Stone Spain, Hennessy Cognac and Piaget. You can see all the rest of Judit’s work for the Fall 2013 Toronto Life Stylebook on her blog.

The Toronto Life Stylebook is in stores right now.

i got: Chanel Summer 2013 Inimitable Waterproof Mascara

Chanel Summer 2013 Makeup Collection
Chanel Summer 2013 Makeup Collection

There are so many lovely things in the Chanel Summer 2013 makeup collection. Chanel Nail polish is always a must have for me but I never really though about Chanel mascara. I didn’t even know Chanel had mascara until I saw an email about Le Volume de Chanel mascara a few months ago. My catlike curiosity eventually got to me and I used a Hudson’s Bay gift card to buy the pricy mascara in black. Le Volume de Chanel didn’t disappoint and I loved its forumla and brush. When I saw the mascara colours for the Chanel summer 2013 collection I lost my shit. They were bright in a way that I usually isn’t associated with Chanel. Yellow (Zest), lime (Lime Light), aqua (Aqua Blue) and blue (Blue Note) aren’t colours you see very often and not in such a pigmented way. I made my way down to the Chanel counter at Holt Renfrew to get a look at them in person. I knew that I would buy Blue Note as I’ve been constantly searching for a better blue mascara than my current favourite Dior. For kicks I had the Chanel associate apply Lime Light to my eyes. The colour matched my vintage Adidas jacket and I was hooked. I didn’t try on Zest or Aqua Blue. Yellow seems like a good idea in theory but from the photos I’ve seen it looks little too costumey.

Chanel Summer 2013 Inimitable Waterproof Mascara
Chanel Summer 2013 Inimitable Waterproof Mascara – Blue Note, Lime Light

The mascara is really pigmented and it really coats the lashes, depositing rich colour everywhere. The mascara formula is long-lasting and waterproof. I’m a big fan of  the summer 2013 Chanel mascara shades. Blue Note kills my former favourite Diorshow dead and stomps on its corpse. The vibrancy of the blue in the Chanel mascara is untouchable. Chanel mascara is pretty expensive at $36. I still highly recommend it if you are looking for bright, standout lashes.

Les Exclusifs de CHANEL Collection – 1932

Les Exclusifs de CHANEL Collection - 1932
Les Exclusifs de CHANEL Collection – 1932

Silly me mixed up my dates and I missed the launch for the newest fragrance in the Les Exclusifs de Chanel collection. I was really excited about it because it would mean playtime at the beautiful Chanel fragrance bar in the Holt Renfrew Bloor Street store.

Les Exclusifs de CHANEL Collection - 1932
Les Exclusifs de CHANEL Collection

Les Exclusifs de CHANEL collection is a modern take on the fragrances created by Ernest Beaux, Chanel’s original nose and Coco Chanel in the 20s and 30s.

Les Exclusifs de CHANEL Collection - 1932
Les Exclusifs de CHANEL Collection – 1932

Chanel’s current nose, Jacques Polge launched the collection 2007 and has released more fragrances over the year. These fragrances all take inspiration from the history of the house and each one explores a singular theme.

Les Exclusifs de CHANEL Collection - 1932
Les Exclusifs de CHANEL Collection – Advert for Chanel Fragrances

1932 is the year that Chanel launched her first designer jewellery collection in her home. The Bijoux de Diamants collection had stars, comets, crescent moons and suns; all inspiration from the lights and signs that shine at night on the Champs-Élysées.

Les Exclusifs de CHANEL Collection – 1932

In 2012, Jacques Polge creates the Bijoux de Diamants Collection inspired fragrance. 1932 includes top notes of Aldehydes, Bergamot, Neroli, middle notes of Carnation, Jasmine, Lilac, Rose, Ylang Ylang and base notes of Musk, Coumarin, Mulberry, Ambrette (Musk Mallow), Orris Root, Incense, Opoponax, Vanilla, Sandalwood, Vetiver.(source) I’m a fan of fruity, floral and woody fragrances so I do like 1932. Initially, it’s very floral smelling but after an hour it calms right down and the woodiness comes to the forefront.

1932 is available at select Chanel Boutiques and the Chanel Espaces Parfums in the Bloor Street, Vancouver and Montreal Holt Renfrew locations. The collection is $145.00 for 75ml and $240 for 200ml.

Chanel Haute Couture Spring Summer 2013

Chanel Haute Couture Spring Summer 2013
Chanel Haute Couture Spring Summer 2013

I raved about the Chanel Paris-Édimbourg Métiers d’Art Pre Fall 2013 show. It was a giant spectacle in a Scottish Castle and full of glorious knitwear. The Chanel Spring Summer 2013 Haute Couture show doesn’t have the grand scale of the Scottish Castle but takes us through a stroll through a garden. Best of all, Karl had a black model. (Yes, I pay attention). And she’s Canadian!!!. I love some Grace Mahary!. Doesn’t she look stunning?

Chanel Haute Couture Spring Summer 2013
Chanel Haute Couture Spring Summer 2013

As with all Chanel show’s you need to see the video. Here’s the full collection

Chanel always does a great job of capturing close ups and beauty shots. The “Enchanted Interlude” is very pretty. I love the makeup.

I tracked down this Making of a Chanel Haute Couture dress from Spring Summer 2013. The work is detailed and meticulous.

The only thing I didn’t like about the collection was the shoes. I can’t deal with the shape of the open toe. If they were closed , I’d be all over them.

Chanel x Fashion’s Night Out Nail Polish

Chanel x Fashion's Night Out
Chanel x Fashion’s Night Out

Chanel is creating another Fashion’s Night Out collection. Last year, Les Jeans de Chanel was only available in the US. I had a friend track them down for me. Luckily, Canadians will be able to purchase them at Chanel Bloor Street, Holt Renfrew Bloor Street and Holt Renfrew Vancouver this time around on September 6, 2012.

Les Twin-Sets de Chanel is a three shade collection of lipstick and nail polish duos. I really like Provocation and Infidèle with Provocation being my favourite. I’ll be tracking those two down on September 6.

i want: Chanel Fall 2012 Nail Polish

Chanel Fall 2012 Nail Polish – Frenzy, Suspicious, Vertigo

Chanel is one of my all time favourite nail polish brands. It looks great, applies easily and lasts long. When I saw Janine post a sneak peak at the Chanel Fall 2012 Makeup and Nail Polish collection I freaked out.

The three new Chanel Nail colours are Frenzy (milky greige, with a hint of lavender), Suspicious (bright fuchsia red) and my favourite Vertigo (black with a shimmery red undertone).

This beautiful trio will be hitting Chanel counters across the country on August 27, 2012.

Neon Dotty Manicure

I embarked on my most ambitious nail journey this week, a 10 colour manicure.

Essie Poppy Razzi - Camera, Lights, Action, Bazooka
Essie Poppy Razzi - Camera, Lights, Action, Bazooka

The idea came to me as I was staring at the new Essie collection, Poppi Razzi. I wanted to use all four of these neon shades but I would need to use the dreaded white polish to make the neon pop. I hummed and hawed over using the white base for about half an hour before deciding that I would do this mani properly. I started with two coats of MAC x Liberty London Vestral White. I was very careful with these coats. I took my time, minimized streaking and allowed each coat to dry. I then used two coats of Action for the overall base color.

Chanel Coco Blue, Essie Funky Lime Light
Chanel Coco Blue, Essie Funky Lime Light

Initially, I was only going to use Camera, Lights and Bazooka for the dots but I realized I needed more variety. I turned to another neon polish from Essie called Funky Lime Light. I felt that some blue and green were essential. I don’t have a neon blue so I used Chanel’s Coco Blue instead.

American Apparel Neon - Purple, Red, Green
American Apparel Neon - Purple, Red, Green

The American Apparel neons were perfect for keeping with the neon theme. I used a dotting tool to make my perfect circles. I used two sizes to keep the dots from overlapping as much as possible. It’s a lot easier than it looks but I still feel I don’t have the perfect dot alignment yet. That will come with practice. It took me about an hour to do this manicure which is about 40 minutes longer than my normal times. I really took my time with it as I wanted the white base coats covered by the coloured polish completely.

Chanel Shade Parade at Holt Renfrew

Chanel and Holt Renfrew are celebrating nails. This month you can get a complimentary shape and polish with one of Chanel’s expert manicurists at the Chanel Shade Parade nail bar.

Come experience the world of Chanel beauty at Holt Renfrew! We are proud to present Chanel’s Shade Parade, a short film featuring a chorus line of fingers decked out in the brand’s luxe lacquers. The cabaret-inspired video showcases some of the French fashion house’s most-coveted nail polish shades with an adorably chic twist. With all of the well-manicured hands and snazzy choreography you can’t help but want to join the shade parade!

You need to call and book an appointment for your manicure. Space is very limited. Dates, locations and phone numbers are below.

Bloor Street (416-922-2333) and Vancouver (604-681-3121) February 27th to March 4th
Calgary (403-269-7341) March 12th to 18th

Chanel invited me to experience the Shade Parade a few weeks ago. I literally squealed when the email from Chanel Canada landed in my inbox. Finally the day was here, my first Chanel event. My manicurist was named Ilona. Maybe I don’t get out much but she was the most elegant and well spoken woman I’ve ever met. I felt a bit like a neanderthal talking with Ilona but she mesmerized me while relaying Chanel nail polish history and influences of the spring collection. The colours are called April, May and June.

Chanel Shade Parade

I decided to ignore my dark nail polish tendencies when for the raspberry looking April. Ilona expertly shaped, buffed and massaged my hands. The polish application was flawless and I didn’t mess them up before getting to the office. It was a good morning and to top it off was a little swag bag from Chanel with 3 new additions to the Anita Nail Polish Family.

Thank you Chanel and Holt Renfrew.

New Year, New Nails

This is the first Nails post of 2012, yay! Shall we take a look at what I’ve been up to recently.

Nails by Melissa at @tipsnailbar

After two great Shellac applications, I decided to try Gelish. They had different colours to CND and I was willing to give them a shot. My nails are on the bottom and have the tie dye effect. I loved the way they looked and the Gelish lasted a very long time. Removal was a huge bitch and my nail were splitting pretty badly. So much so that I don’t’ recommend Gelish at all.

Getting used to this yellow nail polish. Colour doesn't seem right

I purchased some nail polish from American brand Rescue Beauty Lounge. This yellow polish called Mellow Yellow went on very well.

IMG_0098

I can’t remember what polish I used for this but I think the thumb is YSL Midnight Blue and the digits are NARS

IMG_0269

I’m incorporating the glitter polish at lot to. I like putting it on the tips only.  I believe the thumb is YSL Midnight Blue and the digits are Butter London Blagger.  The glitter is Deborah Lippmann Boom Boom Pow.  She does some good glitter.

This is from the Daphne Guinness x MAC Collection. This colour is called Hyperion and I love it!

Red-DiorApparatBritRed

Still playing around with the thumb as a different colour. Here I use a random red I got as a gift from London, England and Dior Apparat.

Nails-ChanelPeridot

Chanel Peridot is a classic and I love adding the L.A. Girl Glitter Addict Uninhibited polish to the tips

Nails-Purples

I love the Deborah Lippmann Boom Boom Pow on the tips of this purple to pink gradient mani. From left to right: RGB pink, Elmspa Anita (yes, the colour is called Anita), Butter London Queen Vic, Cheeky Monkey Brazen Hussy, American Apparel Neon Violet.

Nails-LoneRedGoldMetallics

This was the product of a boring night at home, Random metallic mani.  Left to Right: Lancome MF072, Deborah Lippmann Believe, Dior Apparat, Chanel Peridot, Chanel Quartz.

IMG_0391

My latest discovery is matte top coat. Its changed my life. Here I’ve used a Lancome red with L.A. Girl Glitter Addict Uninhibited polish. I then decided to try out this Deborah Lippmann topcoat I’ve had laying around. OMFG, I love the results.

On the hunt for some of the polishes you saw here, well hit up the following:
Holt Renfrew
The Hudson’s Bay Company
Donato Salon and Spa

I received the L.A. Girl Glitter Addict polish as a Christmas present but you can order online here. I also ordered the Rescue Beauty Lounge polish off their website.

Chanel Spring Summer 2012 Ad Campaign

Chanel Spring Summer 2012 Ad Campaign

I had to do a double take when these Chanel Spring Summer 2012 ad campaign shots came out. What the hell was Joan Smalls doing in a Chanel ad. My head was exploding (this was a good thing in this situation). First, Indian girls in the Chanel Pre-Fall 2012 show and now Joan Smalls in the latest ad campaign. I like this trend.

Chanel Spring Summer 2012 Ad Campaign

As for this ad campaign overall. Joan doesn’t have as many solo shots as Saskia. The photos are lovely but ultimately pretty boring.

i got: Fall Winter 2011 – 2012 Nail Binge: NARS, Dior, Chanel

I’ve had some fun buying some of the Fall Winter 2011 – 2012 nail polish options.

NARS

NARS Nail Polish
Left to Right: Galion, Night Rider, Night Porter, Night Flight, Night Breed

NARS is one of my go to nail polish brands.  It has a beautiful, slick finish and with a nice brush.  The polish wears well for me too.    I got the entire Night Series collection (Night Rider, Night Porter, Night Flight, Night Breed) because I couldn’t choose. The Night Series collection is based on the iconic NARS Night Series Eyeshadows.  I also had to have the Fall 2011 colour, Galion.

Chanel

Tips Gradient Manicure
Left to Right: Chanel Coco Blue, Chanel Blue Boy, Chanel Blue Rebel

I got The Oracle to pick me up the Les Jeans de Chanel colours that were limited edition for Fashion Night Out 2011.  I had Melissa from Tips Nail Bar to incorporate them into a great blue gradient manicure because I couldn’t choose just one to wear.   I love Chanel nail polish it wears very well and has staying power.

Tips Gradient Manicure
Left to Right: YSL Moonlight Blue, Chanel Blue Rebel, Chanel Blue Boy, Chanel Coco Blue, Chanel Riva

Dior

Weird brush on the Dior polish but I have to love the results

I saw Apparat, the new limited edition Dior Nail Lacquer for Holiday 2011 on my new favourite beauty site Temptalia.  The photos on Temptalia looked so good.  Apparat is a gorgeous ruby colour with a hint of gold.   I immediately started a twitter search to find it.   With the help of the Hudson Bay twitter account, I found Apparat at the Queen Street flagship store.

Illusions d’ombres de Chanel

Illusions d’ombres is name of the new Fall Winter 2011 – 2012 makeup collection from Chanel. I only really concern myself with the nail polish but I loved the imagery that went a long with the product shots.

There are 3 polishes for fall, Peridot, Quartz and Graphite. They will be available at Chanel counters beginning August 22, 2011.

I’ve placed a lot of my metallic nail polishes on the back burner recently because their bright counterparts are more fun and a bit obnxious.  However, Chanel’s metallics are making me rethink that decision.

Peridot is a green and gold combination. Graphic sounds really interesting with silver, gold and platinum combined together. Finally, Quartz is a bronze and pink mixture.

i want: Chanel J12 Chromatic Watches

Chanel J12 Chromatic 33mm Watches

So, Chanel PR has started to email me about all things Chanel. I’m not going to lie, my nerdy blogger self thinks this is pretty cool. The latest release was for the new Chanel J12 Chromatic watches. I normally go for bright colourful watches but it’s always good to have something that is a bit classic.  The J12 Chromatic watches are made from titanium ceramic which is a new highly scratch-resistant material almost that is almost hard as sapphire.  I really like the silvery grey finish on these watches.  It looks like liquid metal.  The perfect alternative to your standard black or silver.  There are a number of styles with varying amounts of diamonds or 18-karat white gold bezel, crown and hands.

Chanel J12 Chromatic 38mm Watches

There are two size options, 33mm (top photo) and 38mm. I’ve only posted the women’s options but there is a men’s collection also.

The Chanel J12 Chromatic commercial plays on that liquid metal look.

Chanel Spring Summer 2011

Chanel Spring Summer 2011
The Chanel Spring Summer 2011 fashion show blew me away. I watched the video late Wednesday night and it almost brought a tear to my eye. There was an 80-piece orchestra who played a mix of music from Björk, the Verve and John “007” Barry. Take said orchestra and put them in the Grand Palais with a set inspired by the movie, Last Year at Marienbad. Chanel usually shows at the Grand Palais but this season they made use of the entire space for this incredibly expansive set. Karl tops himself again and again.

Chanel Spring Summer 2011
Amazingly enough the clothes lived up to the set. This is a season of Chanel I approve of. Can we talk about the boots? I’m dying over them. Things I didn’t like: the sandals and the makeup.

Chanel Spring Summer 2011

I’ve embedded the fashion show video for you all to see. It’s a spectacle, a wonderful fashion spectacle. It makes me giddy. With the talk of the fashion show going the way of the dodo, I’m glad to see that Karl Lagerfeld and Chanel’s money are still dishing out for these absolutely amazing moments.

i want: Chanel Fall 2010 – 2011 Ice Cube Handbags

Chanel Fall 2010 Cube Bag
I rediscovered the Chanel Fall 2010 – 2011 ice-cube bags because of a series called Object Fetish on the site Showstudio.com.

Examining key pieces from next seasons international collections, Object Fetish trains obsessive attention onto next seasons not-so-obscure objects of desire – namely the choicest accessories from fashions favourite names, metaphorically unpicked through film and text.

The series is quite good and I love the in-depth discussion around the objects. View the Object Fetish: Chanel Handbag video.

Edit: I found the video on YouTube

Chanel Fall 2010 Cube Bag

This show was so overwhelming with the glacier and the faux fur all over the place. I didn’t notice any of the accessories. The video really worked up my handbag lust. I love the idea of these bags. They make me laugh because they are so ridiculous, but at the same time I’d love to own one. I enjoy that combination of absurdity and lust. I can’t wait to see these in the stores.

I learned some interesting facts from the Showstudio video about Chanel.

Chanel is one of the very few houses that is entirely privately owned rather than managed by a luxury goods conglomerate, and the house is consistently profitable. This is not just through traditional leaders such as perfume, but accessories, clothing and even the haute couture division at Chanel turns a profit.(source)
