i got: Nicholas Kirkwood x Erdem Ankle Boots

Sneaky emails and reminder tweets enter my social space once the major discounts start hitting The Room at the Hudson’s Bay. It’s a good time to be hunting for bargains. It’s during these sales periods that I get strategic about things. It’s about desirability of the brand and price. During this magical time that ownership of the brands I lust for becomes attainable. The Room blessed me with an amazing Christopher Kane skirt.

The Room has a great selection of shoes and the pickings are getting pretty slim by the time it’s 60% off plus an extra 40%. This shoe shopping experience was extra fun because I coerced my friend, Natalie into coming. There were a few choices of from my watch list of designers: Kirkwood, Sanderson, Olympia, Alaia, Atwood, Margiela. I tried on a few and stared wistfully at some wishing I had the same size feet as Stefania from Textstyles.ca.

Nicholas Kirkwood x Erdem Ankle Boots
Nicholas Kirkwood x Erdem Ankle Boots

I wandered the racks several times with a pair of pretty loud Erdem x Nicholas Kirkwood ankle boots. They were a thick tweed and had a lot of pink but the fantastic square lucite heel was something you don’t want to walk away from. The tweed pattern was not my style so I decided to keep looking. However, I had Kirkwood x Erdem on the brain and I searched out every pair and every style on those six racks. I found a pair of the ankle boot in a more subdued navy blue. The material was crepe cotton instead of tweed and I liked it better. “There’s a Plan B don’t worry”, I thought to myself as trying them on in case of disappointment. Thankfully, I didn’t need Plan B and the pair of Nicholas Kirkwood for Erdem Tweedprint crepe cotton ankle boots came home with me.

It’s been a long time since I’ve felt smug about a shoe purchase. I’m pleased that I now have some Kirkwood in my closet and some Erdem I can wear (I have a beautiful silk Erdem dress that’s too small for me at this time). As you can imagine, they get some stares at the office.

Talking About My ‘Do in Worn Journal Issue 15

Worn Journal Issue 15
Worn Journal Issue 15

I’m in the current issue of Worn Journal. It’s been out since November but I’m only getting around to posting about it now. In June, I got an email from Serah-Marie asking if she could feature me in Worn’s hair issue. As you can imagine, I was a little perplexed at why I would be included. She explained that the piece would be feature on people with interesting hair styles. Accompanying the photos would be an interview with questions related to hair and identity. I said yes without question because it’s Worn Journal and it’s a great topic that my (lack of) hair could contribute to.

Worn Journal Issue 15 - Talking Heads - Seven discussions of distinctive 'dos
Worn Journal Issue 15 – Talking Heads – Seven discussions of distinctive ‘dos

The talented Lainee Dee did my makeup before I ventured to the Worn Journal offices to meet the photographer, Brittany Lucas. I brought a few different outfits to choose from for the shoot but the final decision was the Smythe Warbler Tribute Blazer, earring by Eliza Kozurno and a leather Tshirt by Danier. It was late July when this photo was taken and it was roasting outside. With the leather and the blazer on I’m surprised my makeup isn’t’ running all over the place in this shot. Brittany and I went into the alley by the office and took a number of shots against different garage doors and using different angles and mostly stoic facial expressions. I’ve always said I’m terrible at the model scowl, this photo proves me wrong. Smiling comes so naturally to me but it’s nice to see I can do the complete opposite too. I’m pretty much in love with the photo. It turned out better than I could have ever dreamed. Lainee and Brittany did a fantastic job of making me look great. I’m giving myself a pat on the back for the kick ass styling 🙂

Now your probably curious about my interview. Well, you’ll have to grab yourself a copy of Worn Journal Issue 15 to read it. The issue is fantastic overall and you should probably buy a copy anyways. It’s available online at wornjournal.com or in person at a whole ton of places in the city and beyond.

Thank you Worn Journal.

i want: Calligraffiti by Niels Shoe Meulman x United Nude

United Nude has another fun collaboration for sale. This time they teamed up with graffiti artist Niels Shoe Meulman. His specialty is Calligraffiti which combines calligraphy and graffiti. You can see some of Shoe’s (he goes by that name) work on his website. While graffiti is his main discipline he also produces sketches, photography and drawings.

Calligraffiti x United Nude
Calligraffiti x United Nude

I love the neon green version of the Calligraffiti shoe but it comes in black and off-white for those that aren’t as adventurous. The laser cut leather upper spells out “Unruly Shoe” which is one of those charming details that I fawn all over. The heel is 5.1 inches and that includes the platform is 0.8 inch platform. You can buy the Calligraffiti Shoe on UnitedNude.com. They are $550.00 which is less than the press release quote of $750.

MYKITA MYLON x Moncler Fall Winter 2012 – 2013

MYKITA MYLON x Moncler Fall Winter 2012 - 2013
MYKITA MYLON x Moncler Fall Winter 2012 – 2013

It come as no surprised to regular readers that I’m obsessed with everything Moncler. When MYKITA and Moncler teamed up in the spring I was excited. Two brands I really love coming together for a special collaboration. I’m also a sunglasses nut but the only thing preventing me from owning a pair is the cost. They are so expensive and not available in Canada! With shipping, duties and foreign exchange I’d be looking at around $1000. OUCH! I can’t justify it, even my Prada Baroque’s didn’t cost that much.

MYKITA MYLON x Moncler Fall Winter 2012 - 2013
MYKITA MYLON x Moncler Fall Winter 2012 – 2013

Well, MYKITA MYLON x Moncler is back for the Fall Winter 2012 – 2013 season and I’m still obsessed.

“From mountain peaks to the city streets” was the credo this time, and with model LIONEL we’re moving a bit more into the urban context.

LIONEL is available in the following colour combinations: khaki with brown reflective lenses, brown with gold reflective lenses and black with silver reflective lenses – all three featuring mineral glass from traditional Italian manufacturer Barberini, boasting excellent durability and clarity of vision. A delicate silhouette and a further reduced weight were the defining features behind the creation of the unisex model LIONEL.

The preceding LINO model, which launched the collaborative range, will also be available in khaki for the new season. All lenses have a very special hallmark: they reveal the MYKITA & MONCLER logo when breathed on.

It’s Moncler’s 60th anniversary and this collection commemorates it so they created a campaign video. Check it out.

Cougar Pillow Boot Collection Fall Winter 2012

Cougar Pillow Boot Collection Fall Winter 2012
Cougar Pillow Boot Collection Fall Winter 2012

Cougar Boots had a mobile installation going around the city showing off the new Pillow Boot collection for the season. I stopped by the King and Brant intersection where they had set up shop one November day during lunch.

The installation was there to show off the new Cougar Pillow boot styles to the public. Media was also invited to check out the new styles.

I was really impressed with the new styles added to the Cougar Pillow Boot line. The reworked original Pillow Boot is back in different colourways like black, sienna, rust and tan. New styles are a bit more feminine with wedge heels and different textures.

Cougar Pillow Boot Quilty Pleasures
Cougar Pillow Boot Quilty Pleasures

I love the tall Pillow Boot called Quilty Pleasures. They come in black and chestnut. They are calf Leather with quilted nylon. These were the boot I received from the collection courtesy of Cougar. I wore them yesterday because it was the first below -10 degrees day. I seriously forgot how cold it could be as we’ve been spoiled with mild winters for the last couple of years. The Quilty Pleasures boot is warm, light and comfortable. You can roll down the shaft to reveal a furry inside but I prefer to keep them up to keep my legs warm. I don’t stop wearing dresses or skirts in the winter so tall, warm boots are an absolute necessity.

Cougar Pillow Boot Quilty Pleasures

The Quilty Pleasures boot is a nice addition to the Pillow Boot collection as it adds a tall option for customers.

Cougar Pillow Boot Wedgy
Cougar Pillow Boot Wedgy

The Wedgy is the reworked original Pillow Boot with an added wedge heel. It’s for those that like the reworked original but want a feminine touch. It comes in tan and black.

Cougar Boots Edgy Wedgy

The Edgy Wedgy boot wasn’t on display in the truck which is a total shame. From the photos they are my favourite pair of the new collection. I would have picked these over the Quilty Pleasures (even though they are amazing). They are like a wedge sneaker snow boot and probably the only time you’ll see me approve a description that includes sneaker and wedge.

All boots in the Cougar Pillow Boot Collection are rated from -10 to – 30 degrees which makes them perfect for Canadian winters. They all have the tell-tale red fleece lining and range in price from $200 to $250. The boots are available at a number of retailers like B2 and Browns in the city.  See the website for a more complete list.

I dream of two brands when it comes to outerwear, Moncler and Acne. One day I will own one of these kick ass Acne shearlings. They are so bad ass.

Velocite Shearling Jackets by Acne
Velocite Shearling Jackets by Acne

The magenta shearling is called the Velocite and it’s an oversized moto jacket. This is the one I most covet as it covers the waist and is super roomy. Doesn’t it look warm as all hell.

The cropped shearling moto jacket is called Rita. It’s the more fitted shearling. It looks warm too but I like the coverage the Velocite offers. The Rita would be my second choice of Acne shearling.

You can find Acne shearlings at Jonathan+Olivia and TNT in Toronto.

Long Cat Scarf by BECKSÖNDERGAARD
Long Cat Scarf by BECKSÖNDERGAARD

I received this lovely Long Cat Scarf by BECKSÖNDERGAARD from the Caroline and Matéo, owners of Canon Blanc during a little MasterCard Stylicity shopping trip. Check out an interview with them both for the MasterCard Stylicity Blog. It’s pretty obvious that as a cat lover I’d appreciate a scarf of a cat wearing a scarf. Very meta. This cotton scarf is lightweight but massive at about 1 ft x 2 ft. Normally, I only use light cotton scarves in the summer but I think the length of this BECKSÖNDERGAARD one will allow for multiple wrappings for warmth.

It was an absolute pleasure to participate in the Fall Winter 2012 Perfecto Mag Street Style video. I’ve been dying for it to come out and here it is. It’s amazing how it all came together. There was hair and makeup, styling, still shots and video clips.

TFW Spring Summer 2013 - Holt Renfrew
TFW Spring Summer 2013 – Holt Renfrew

The tile of this post is a bit of a misnomer because Holt Renfrew didn’t show any looks from the spring summer 2013 season. Instead they opted for a showcase of merchandise Canadian and international that is available in stores now. I don’t have much to say about in general since these clothes originally went down the catwalk in March.

“Tonight we’re proud to present a special take on ‘Canadian Catwalk’ — celebrating Holt Renfrew as the destination for those who love fashion”, said Alix Box, Senior Vice President of Sales & Marketing for Holt Renfrew. “Our runway showcases this unique moment in our 175 year history with an inspiring collection of contemporary and designer fashions to wear right now.”(source: Press Release)

TFW Spring Summer 2013 - Holt Renfrew TFW Spring Summer 2013 - Holt Renfrew

Holts opted to hold a breakfast fashion show that showcased their Canadian designer’s spring summer 2013 collections. I missed this cause it was too early in the morning, ha ha.

TFW Spring Summer 2013 - Holt Renfrew TFW Spring Summer 2013 - Holt Renfrew

The show had about 65 looks and they had all the best models ripping through those looks. It didn’t seem like a long show at all. Designers featured in the show included: Dsquared2, Lida Baday, Jeremy Laing, Pavoni, Smythe, Kenzo, Tom Ford, Victoria Beckham, YSL, Alexis Bittar, Ela, Dean Davidson, Lilliput, Maryam Keyhani, Michael Kors, Van der Straeten, Lanvin, Christian Louboutin, Manolo Blahnik, Prada, Rosegold, Acne, Alexander Wang, Isabel Marant, Burberry Porsum, Fendi, Dolce and Gabanna, Carven, Celine, Kenzo, Canada Goose, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Phillip Lim, Rag and Bone and Judith & Charles. The models were clad head to toe in Holt merchandise.

It was an uneventful show but I bet this gamble paid off for Holt Renfrew. I’m sure it stirred up some fashion emotions in people and I bet sales in the items featured are up. I’m kinda surprised Holt Renfrew didn’t show in season merchandise for all their runway shows. There were a lot of drool worthy items in the show and I love, love, love this Celine coat.

Mulberry, Spinning a Yarn

Hand Knitted Polo Neck & Hand Knitted Gilet in Ink Blue Wool Alpaca Blend
Mulberry Hand Knitted Polo Neck & Hand Knitted Gilet in Ink Blue Wool Alpaca Blend

This Mulberry documentary on the women who hand knit the chunky wool pieces from the Mulberry Autumn Winter 2012 collection is fashion porn. What a brilliant little film that takes you into the lives of those that make the clothing and their specialized skills. I love that Mulberry uses traditional British crafts. I’m now obsessed with getting myself a Mulberry sweater.

Mulberry’s short documentary ‘Spinning a Yarn’ focuses on Margaret and Valerie – two of the women responsible for hand-knitting the thick, sheep’s wool pieces from the Mulberry Autumn Winter 2012 Catwalk Collection.

Margaret and Valerie, knitting veterans with 70 years experience under her needles, speak about how they got into knitting, and what it means to them. Both women knit for Eribé, the Scottish knitwear design house who helped Mulberry find the perfect knitters for the complex and intricate pattern of its designs.

I’m a Moon Apparel Ambassador + 20% off the Ottoman Dress

The Moon Apparel Blogger Ambassadors
The Moon Apparel Blogger Ambassadors

This seems to be the year of starring in ad campaigns for me which is pretty freaking awesome. Earlier in the spring, I was in the MasterCard Stylicity campaign and now for fall its Moon Apparel. They have gathered some of their favourite Canadian bloggers to show how we incorporate Moon Apparel into our wardrobes. Like the Stylicity campaign, this is a paid gig. Gotta love feeling like a working model 🙂

In celebration of individual street style, MOON Apparel has partnered with 10 Canadian fashion bloggers in five cities across the country. The bloggers were specially selected by Mimran Group Inc. to become members of an ambassador program set to launch October 8th 2012. The bloggers were challenged to bring their best fashion flair forward by integrating their individual style with clothing pieces from the fall 2012 MOON collection and accessories from their existing wardrobe to create seasonal fashion looks. Captured on the streets of their cities, the bloggers turned the lenses on themselves to shoot their looks. Each ambassador will post their favourite look and style tip of the season on their respective blogs and invite their readers and followers to enjoy an exclusive offer from MOON. Check back with the Yellow Dot Blog each week for the full scoop on Canada’s newest style influencers.(source)

You can see all the blogger’s looks on fashionmagazine.com but my style selection for the campaign is the Ottoman Dress. It reminds me of Alaïa but this I can afford. From October 15 – 18, 2012 you can receive 20% off The Ottoman Dress on moonapparel.com by using the promo code IWANTIGOT..

Save 20% on the Moon Apparel Ottoman Dress with the code IWANTIGOT
Save 20% on the Moon Apparel Ottoman Dress with the promo code IWANTIGOT

Moon asked me to talk about my look (which is a pretty typical fall look to be honest) and give some styling tips for the dress.

This is a classic fall look for me. I contrast the ladylike Ottoman Dress with a rock and roll edge. To achieve this I use the standard: opaque black tights, black flat boots and a leather jacket.

This knit Ottoman Dress is my favourite piece from fall 2012. My look can be adapted slightly with motorcycle boots or even some black converse. The dress is also perfect for colour blocking. Pair it with bright tights or a cardigan. It’s time to break out your colour wheel. To create a more classic look use a white or black button up shirt, black tights and black pumps. Finally, on those really cold days add a turtleneck for extra warmth.

I really enjoyed this campaign because I had free reign to do whatever I wanted. Each blogger receive a package that includes pieces from the fall collection. Our job was to style it and capture it. I received the Ottoman Knit Dress, Riding Pant, Snakeskin Blouse and Pencil Skirt. One Sunday, I put together looks for everything but the skirt and bundled them into a garment bag. There was a quick stop at the Eaton Centre MAC cosmetics for makeup applied expertly by Lainee Diona. Then onset stylist April Wozny and photographer friend Dave Yan, who brought two friends along as his assistants headed over to U of T. We did it guerrilla styles in one of the building at the University of Toronto. No, we didn’t get permission and strategically placed ourselves outside of camera range. Moon only required one look but I’m posting the others for fun. It was a fair bit of work and we should show it off.

I paired the Riding Pant with a black Complex Geometries tank top, plaid Smythe blazer, Rebecca Minkoff MAC Bag and Ash Boots. I paired the Snakeskin Blouse with a Nine West clutch, Club Monaco over-sized blazer and cobalt blue pants from the Gap. The earring and ring are from Jenny Bird and the bangle is Hermès.

From October 15 – 18, 2012 you can receive 20% off The Ottoman Dress on moonapparel.com by using the promo code IWANTIGOT.

i want: A Biker Jacket by Sacai

A Biker Jacket by Sacai
A Biker Jacket by Sacai

Sacai by Chitose Abe is a favourite in I want – I got land. She has such a fantastic eye and uncanny ability to merge polar opposite styles together. These are dream clothes and she’s created my dream Biker Jacket.

Cowhide biker jacket, long zips sleeves, three zip pockets, one flap pocket, belt with adjustable buckle, button tab on shoulders, closure by asymmetric zip. Taupe and black lining in cupro, wool and polyester fixed thanks to snap buttons, long sleeves, frill on front and bottom.

I love the convertable nature of this jacket. Remove the frill if you want something simple and add it when the time is right. You can see it here on the runway in stunning white. The price however is the downside at $4500 from Colette. Holt Renfrew Bloor Street carries some Sacai pieces but I haven’t looked around lately to see if this was one of them.

I really want a pair of Church’s shoes but I came across these Dr Martens that I could equally love. The Arien style is part of the Creeper collection with a pointed toe and low profile Airwair sole. They are sturdy looking too and would make a nice seasonal substitute for my Rokin derby shoes which can’t handle the winter.
