Made in Canada, A Video by Fortnight Lingerie

I love videos that give you a peek into what goes into making the clothing you buy. Toronto based Fortnight Lingerie created this great video of the work that happens at their Parkdale studio. Fortnight Lingerie is manufactured entirely in-house, at a Parkdale Village studio located in Toronto, Canada. The undergarments are handcrafted by highly trained designers, to uphold quality and precision with every piece that is created. This video is a behind-the-scenes look at the craftsmanship behind Fortnight Lingerie.

Phosphorescent Invasion, the LouLou Jean by Hudson – Spring Summer 2012

If I was 19 again, I would be all over the Loulou Tuxedo Crop Super Skinny Jean by Hudson. The style is inspired by LouLou de la Falaise, Yves Saint Laurent’s muse. She was a big influence in the design of Le Smoking. The thing that makes these tuxedo inspired jeans special is the glow in the dark neon strip that comes to life under black light. The rave going 19 year old me would have freaked. Here is a trippy video that shows the denim in action created by Hudson. The Loulou Tuxedo Crop Super Skinny Jean comes in three colourways: Dark Navy with Phosphorescent Orange stripe, Burgundy with Phosphorescent Pink, and Olive with Phosphorescent Yellow. Holt Renfrew is the place to get this denim from and it will retail for $265. They will be hitting the shelves this February.  On February 10th, there will be a big launch event during NYFW in the Meatpacking District including street art installations, videos and a big party at Scoop. images: courtesy of Hudson Jeans

Toronto Fashion Week’s New Players

The Fall Winter 2012 – 2013 fashion season is approaching. The FDCC has cleaned house and the event formerly called LG Toronto Fashion Week Beauty by L’Oréal Paris is now called World MasterCard Fashion Week. Yes, one long name for another long name. I hate to say that both are kinda obnoxious but events need sponsors and that jazz. However, I also lament the lack of Toronto in the new name and with the event in general. I’ll probably go back to using TEFW (Toronto Extended Fashion Week) to describe our two weeks of fashion a season. Apparently, I called this new fashion week partnership way back in November in a drunken conversation I don’t remember when Danielle visited. “World MasterCard Fashion Week is one of the world’s most anticipated fashion events bringing together established names, emerging designers and luxury brands,” said Betty DeVita, President of MasterCard Canada. She adds, “Fashion is a key element of our Priceless Toronto and global Priceless Cities initiative. Through Fashion Week we are celebrating Toronto as Canada’s quintessential destination …

OBJECT by George Antonopolous for Danier Spring Summer 2012

OBJECT, the collaboration from George Antonopolous and Danier Leather kicks it up a notch for Spring Summer 2012 with lots of colour. I’m drooling. I’m impressed by this collaboration. George, how the fuck did you get Danier to agree to all this colour? Canadians aren’t know for their colourful ways and I applaud Danier for listening to George and taking this colour risk. I hope Canadians get it and jump into colour this summer. I seriously love the whole collection. Bravo George and bravo Danier. I can’t wait to see what else you guys come up with in the future. images: courtesy of George Antonopolous

Ask A Geek: Suits for The Tall Woman

Sometimes readers ask me questions. If they are of value to all my readers I post them online. If you have a question, please feel free to submit it using the contact form. I’ll definitely do my best to answer it. I want – I got reader Nancy wrote: Hi Anita, I am desperately looking for a good professional suit that I will own for years. The kicker is that I am tall (5’11”) so most places do not carry styles long enough for my arms. The “tall girls” type of store are either way to big, crappy style or just plain old looking. Not too sure where to turn at this point… I’m willing to spend up to $500. Have any ideas? Hi Nancy, I love sourcing twitter for these types of questions. I’m 5’5′ so I don’t usually have problems with sizing for my height. My first answer to you would be ditch the malls and shops and go custom. There are many tailors and designers that can help in this regard. Fit …

I played a Cannon Doll in The National Ballet of Canada’s The Nutcracker

Just when I thought things couldn’t get more exciting and random in life I get an email from the National Ballet. They have invited me to take part in this season’s performance of The Nutcracker as a Cannon Doll. Traditionally, the National Ballet asks Toronto luminaries, personalities and politicians to join the production in this small role. For those of you not familiar with The Nutcracker story, the Cannon Dolls are colourfully costumed, Russian Petrouchka dolls in Act I who shoot a cannon into the audience to begin the battle scene. James Kudelka’s 1995 version of this evergreen seasonal classic is a perfect gem of a ballet, affectionate and reflective, at once cheeringly traditional yet freshly attuned to the rhythms and accents of the contemporary. Rarely have the dreamscapes and wonder of childhood fantasy, the allure of spectacle and the mood of reverie been integrated in such a seamless blend of dazzling stagecraft, virtuosic choreography and ravishing design. Kudelka’s gentle re-shaping of the narrative releases the story (based on E.T.A. Hoffmann’s Christmas tale) into new …

Dandi Maestre Spring Summer 2012

Dandi Maestre has once again created a visually stunning lookbook for the Spring Summer 2012 collection. Her photos are always very colourful with a wonderful cast of characters with interesting faces. Dandi is one of my favourite Toronto jewellery designers. Her pieces are handmade in Canada and use organic materials such as antlers, bull horn, rough amber and emeralds, reclaimed wood, natural seeds and nuts, elements found on shores, in rivers, jungles and forests. The Spring Summer 2012 collection is called Raw. “The raw beauty I find in people and nature inspires my new sculptural pieces. I see my work as artwork, where there isn’t anything too outrageous. I believe in uniqueness . Nature is unique, and so are my designs, each one of a kind, individual and raw. Beauty is in all of us and I want to make people feel this. My work is all about texture and imperfection, just as us.” -Dandi Maestre Dandi Maestre has a showroom in Toronto at 386 Huron Street. You can also purchase her designs online. See …
