Canstruction Toronto 2008

So every year in at my work, they setup entries for Canstruction. Canstruction is the most unique food charity in the world! A foundation of the Society for Design Administration (SDA), Canstruction is a design/build competition currently held in cities throughout North America. Teams of architects, engineers, and students mentored by these professionals compete to design and build giant structures made entirely from full cans of food. The results are displayed to the public as magnificent sculpture exhibits in each city where a competition is held. At the close of the exhibitions, all of the canned food used in the structures is donated to local food banks for distribution to emergency feeding programs that include pantries, soup kitchens, the elderly and day care centres. Since its inception, ten million pounds of food has been donated to aid in the fight against hunger. Initiated by the Denver, Seattle and New York Chapters of the SDA in 1992/93, Canstruction now has over one hundred individual competitions scheduled to take place during the 2007-2008 cycle. The 2nd annual Flourish for Reena event took place last week. The Reena Foundation is the charitable arm of Reena; a non-profit social service agency dedicated to integrating individuals who have a developmental disability into the mainstream of society. Reena was established in 1973 by parents of children with developmental disabilities, as a practical alternative to institutions. Reena strives to create and maintain an environment that respects and promotes dignity, individuality, independence and freedom of choice. Flourish is a yearly event hosted by The Reena Foundation which provides funding towards education programs and respite services to people with developmental disabilities within the GTA. These essential programs are maintained through the Toby and Henry Battle Development Centre in Thornhill. Your generous ticket purchase to Flourish will help to keep the services alive and accessible to our clients in need. It really was a wine lovers paradise at Flourish for Reena. There were 16 wine vendors from around the globe with a focus on Chile. They all setup their tasting stations and away everyone went. I’m a …

Virgin Unite Canada – The Mad Hatter’s Ball

Virgin Unite Canada – The Mad Hatter’s Ball So this was my first swanky fundraiser invite. The Mad Hatter’s Ball was an event for Virgin Unite, the not-for-profit entrepreneurial foundation of the Virgin Group. This is the second year this event has taken place in Canada. It also takes place across the world in other major cities. Virgin Unite is the entrepreneurial foundation of the Virgin Group. We work with great partners all over the world to develop new approaches to social and environmental issues. We’re fortunate that Richard and the Virgin group pick up our overhead costs – so 100% of all donations go directly to the frontline where it is needed the most. We believe that the only way we are going to drive the scale of change that needs to happen in the world, is if we revolutionise the way that the business and social sectors work together. We want to use all the entrepreneurial energy across the Virgin Group to help drive this revolution. Richard Branson didn’t spend much time with …
