What does Barbara think. Spring 2009 edition

Barbara Atkin, vice president of fashion, Holt Renfrew has been mentioned in the Buyers Report for Spring 2009 on WWD. Let’s see what she has to say On New York: Barbara Atkin, vice president and fashion director of Holt Renfrew, agreed. “We’re all examining and stepping back,” she said. “When there’s economic instability, people question their purchasing. “This is a time when we’re really looking at the new guard of designers,” said Atkin, noting some iconic American design houses are floundering without their namesake designers at the helm. “There’s a lot of confusion at Bill Blass and the problem with Halston is, what does it mean anymore? It’s got to go beyond the name on the label. It’s just got to be fantastic clothes. The clothes have to have substance and the identity of what the brand is has to jump out at you.” That’s what Atkin is looking for in all collections. “If we don’t get that, everything we purchase fades into a blandism on our floors.” Of course, there were exceptions. i want: Harlequin Feltworks Scarf

Interesting treatment on the wool scarf. Jenne Giles of Harlequin Feltworks combines wool and silk to make felt that she uses to create these sculptural scarfs. This would be a great addition to a collarless coat in the winter. You can purchase these scarves online at Jenne’s Etsy shop, Radici.co.uk and The Artful Home. via Notcouture.com images: radici.co.uk and artfulhome.com

geekiviews: Oscillation, Mascara by Lancome

I had a day off work so I attend the preview of the new Lancôme mascara. Ôscillation, Mascara by Lancôme. So the whole buzz about this mascara is that it vibrates. That knowledge brought out a lot of comments about eye poking and other injuries from most people. It’s not actually like that. The technology is nothing like your electric toothbrush. The brush oscillates at 7,000 vibrations per minute. Partner this action with a specially made formula and there you go. The oscillation aspect of the brush was chosen in order to mimic the way professional makeup artists would apply the product. Jean-Louis Guéret, the designer of all Lancôme brushes gave a short talk about the product and the history of mascara. It was fascinating to be honest and it made me regret not getting into Chemistry when I had the chance. Could you imagine the R&D lab for Lancôme mascara!!!! We were all given the chance to try the product out in addition to the demo. Even Jean-Louis used the product; that is dedication …
