Thanks to @SoundboardTO, official Massey Hall & Roy Thomson Hall twitter account I won tickets to see funk legend Maceo Parker in Toronto.
Maceo Parker (pronounced /ˈmeɪsiËoÊŠ/; born February 14, 1943) is an American funk and soul jazz saxophonist, best known for his work with James Brown in the 1960s, as well as Parliament-Funkadelic in the 1970s. Parker was a prominent soloist on many of Brown’s hit recordings, and a key part of his band, playing alto, tenor and baritone saxophones(source).
Since the Nokia N8 takes such great video I decided to utilize it for this talent.

Thank god for Tommy Ton and Justin Wu. They bring us beautiful male models lip syncing on camera. Swoon.
I’m very thrilled to be presenting another video in collaboration with Justin Wu. He’s worked extremely hard this time around gathering all the boys in milan and paris for this special video and i’m so grateful he’s done it again for Jak & Jil blog. Thank you to all the male models who participated and made this video even more special. Enjoy!!!
The new Yves Saint Laurent Spring Summer 2011 Ad Campaign was shot in the gardens of the 30s, Villa Bled Roknine in Marrakech Palmeraie. Daria is out and Arizona Muse is in. I really like her look. Inez & Vinoodh are the photographers. You can read some more info about Bled Roknine here.
The campaign makes the clothing look good. I might have to revisit YSL Spring Summer 2011.
During the summer I was invited to the Greta Constantine Fall Winter 2010 campaign photoshoot. It was all hush, hush and I couldn’t release any photos till after the official launch. The campaign stars the lovely Tara Gill and was shot by Gabor Jurina. I got photos and videos of the backstage goings on.
I got a couple good shots of Tara myself. She’s a beautiful woman.
See more behind the scenes shots in the slideshow.
Greta Constantine is available in Canada at Holt Renfrew. Greta Constantine Atelier is available at Rac Boutique.
The Fall Winter 2010 – 2011 ad campaign for Hermès is a lot darker than Spring Summer 2010 which was fairytale like. The Avengers theme from the runway show goes hand in hand with these photos. It’s like the lovely spy who is decked head to toe in Hermès makes her getaway with her SO Black Kelly. She just can’t leave her wardrobe so she gets her kindly old mentor to have them moved to her safe house by carriage. Of course, this generous act will result in his death. Yada, yada, yada. I should write screenplays. Ha
I couldn’t resist posting these videos. The first is a documentary that was a special gift in the June/July 2010 issue of Paris Vogue.
featuring five top models of the season: Sessilee Lopez, Sasha Pivovarova, Natasha Poly, Freja Beha Erichsen, and Constance Jablonski, as they experience the latest Paris Fashion Week. Sure, the majority of the short film is in French, but it’s really the behind-the-scenes look which is most intriguing.(source)
It’s a lot of fun to get to see the girls personalities. I’m a huge fan of Sasha and Freja.
I’m loving these fashion films by Ruth Hogben on Showstudio. The latest is Joie de Vivre which features Gareth Pugh, and supermodel Raquel Zimmermann, who is absolutely awesome. She knows how to move.
Encapsulating all the dark glamour, divine decadence and hedonistic joy of the roaring Twenties, Gareth Pugh’s A/W 2010 collection is a stylised, silver and black Art Deco fantasy projected at breakneck speed into the twenty-first century.
Raquel Zimmermann is a model who I never really paid attention to until fairly recently. I finally get it, she’s good.
The Fall Winter 2010 – 2011 ad campaign from Givenchy is totally amazing. I love the colour and composition. The cast of models is what makes this so much fun. Yay for the diverse group. Of course I’m happy because Mariacarla Boscono is making an appearance too.
Complicit looks, and the promise of a kiss between two women: an ambiguous mix of masculine and feminine looks against hues of red, blue, white, grey and beige: the Givenchy campaign for F-W 2010-2011, photographed by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggot in Paris.
Sophisticated images against a provocative background. In the forefront, the collection designed by Riccardo Tisci. What has people talking — and caused the images to make the rounds of the web even before the campaign has been officially published — is the presence of Lea T: ex-assistant of Tisci, currently a student of veterinary medicine, ex-model and transexual.
Tisci wanted to use her “for her fragile appearance and her aristocratic air.” Together with Lea T are the models Maria Carla Boscono — a close friend of Tisci’s — and Malgosia Bela, Catherine McNeil, Joan Smalls, Ming Xee and Jamie Bochert. The featured male beauties are Jonathan Marquez, Paolo Rolden, Simon Nessman and Willy Cartier.(source)
This editorial is absolutely stunning. I love the use of the Alexander McQueen’s Plato’s Atlantis spring summer 2010 pieces. It’s quite fitting in this underwater world. Other designers in the editorial include Balmain and Prada.

I would love to be in London to see these portraits of Grace Jones.
Light, sound and Grace Jones: three unremitting forces of nature. Chris Levine, the latest in a line of artists to work with Jones (Andy Warhol and Keith Haring came before him), has brought the elements together in his 3D portrait series Stillness at the Speed of Light. “How was I going to make any evolutionary step forward in a line of some of the extraordinary iconic images of her—I did my best,†Levine confesses. After a two-decade, self-imposed exile from the recording studio, Grace Jones—disco diva, über-model, Bond girl, gay icon and stuff of Studio 54 legend—made a whirlwind return with the tour for her 2008 album, Hurricane. Levine, a ground-breaking light artist whose visceral work with laser beams has led to collaborations with Mario Testino and Hussein Chalayan was commissioned to work on the lighting following an introduction to Jones from master milliner, Philip Treacy. And it was a Swarovski crystal encrusted bowler hat by Treacy (one of his typically exotic, gravity-defying creations for Jones's tour) that proved the showstopper, reflecting shards of light over the audience as the high-beam laser hit it. “Laser and crystal is an alchemy I’ve experimented with for years, so when I saw the hat for the first time it was obvious what I was going to do with it,†Levine says. Jones then invited Levine to illuminate her portrait and to direct the upcoming music video for her single “Love You to Life,” which is a first for the artist. “It’s pretty raw and elemental—just the primal essence of Grace and light,†Levine says. Stillness at the Speed of Light is on show at the Vinyl Factory Gallery, in Soho, London through May 15th.(NOWNESS)
Karen Elson the redheaded supermodel is a singer. I have to admit, she’s good!. I had no idea but it seems she has always dabbled in music. Check out this live acoustic version of her song The Ghost Who Walks. She has a great voice
A little over a year ago frillr.com tipped me off about Rose Codero. I was immediately taken that I wrote a post called simply, Rose Cordero. I hoped to see lots of her in FW10. I’m getting my wish. What a year you’ve had Rose, I love seeing you around.
I haven’t been to the Autoshow in at least twenty years so I jumped at the chance to write about the new The MINI Beachcomber Concept car. The MINI Beachcomber was making a short stop in Toronto for its first Canadian appearance before being whisked to Europe for another autoshow. It may seem a little weird to my regular readers, but I’m a huge MINI fan. I love luxury and sports cars with Porsche being my favourite. Way back in 2006, I wrote a post for blogTO about Zipcar and my first experience driving a MINI.
Luxury event managers, CANDICE&ALISON were hired to produce the MINI Beachcomber launch with the theme of beach tailgate party. They brought together a mix of fashion designers, models, makeup artists and product designers to contribute to the launch. The theme was heavily influenced by retro 50s beach party pop culture.
Canadian designer Farley Chatto created MINI branded pin-up retro polka dot bikinis, a pair of board shorts and sheer tank. Jon, Vlada (black hair) and Caitlin of Elite models stepped out in Farley’s clothing to create a buzz around the car. Make-up/Hair Artist Ivy Lam recreated the 50s pin-up look for the women and a clean-cut 50s surf boy look for the lone male model. Jon, who is dangerously attractive, reminded me of Superman. He has that classic tall, dark and handsome look.
It seemed like Vlada was a pin-up girl in a previous life, she played the role so authentically. She really knew how to use the car in her poses. There was a high fashion element to this launch which was a refreshing change from the typical car show model. Models, high fashion or not, were very scarce at the autoshow, so this drew a lot of people to MINI’s booth.
Rounding out this group was Product Designer, Jasin Dollin who is known for creating the Lil’g (It will be available this year). It’s a DIY designer boombox made of vinyl which allows for customization. It can play your MP3 player. Jasin created a custom Lil’g for the MINI Beachcomber launch which spent a lot of time with Jon.
The best part of the presentation was people watching. Women in bikinis are a draw and I’m sure Jon helped steer some women over too. Many people wanted their pictures taken with the models. Men chatted up Vlada. There were several really cute moments involving little kids and the models. I saw Elvis, I’m not joking.
So you are probably wondering about the car. Let’s get talking about it because I think it’s really fun. The MINI Beachcomber Concept is a four seat open body concept car. There are no permanent doors on this vehicle. Protection from the elements comes in two forms. One is a removable soft roof that is similar to a tonneau cover on a boat. The roof is an extremely light “very robust special fibre” (BMW’s words not mine) with excellent protection from wind and rain. The roof also has transparent plastic inserts at the sides and rear acting as windows. The second option is extra-light plastic, flush fitting inserts that are for the doors and the luggage compartment lid of the car. The principle is to mimic hardtop functionality. None of these options were present for my visit and there are no images in the media kit, boo.
The MINI Beachcomber Concept is a 21st century reboot of the Mini Moke. I have very fond memories of the Mini Moke. It reminds me of sea, sand, salt, Barbados, sun, flying fish, breadfruit and family. My parents are from Barbados and we have had many family vacations on the island. The Mini Moke was very much a sand a surf kind of car and had widespread usage in the Caribbean. The target market for the MINI Beachcomber Concept is the kitesurfers, wakeboarders and triathletes of the world. It boasts of its “special fastening systems” with makes it perfect for storing bulky items like mountain bikes, surfboards and wakeboards.
The MINI Beachcomber is equipped with 17-inch light-alloy runflat tyres and doesn’t need a spare. What you think is a spare tire compartment is actually a removable case with lock that is for storage. Instead of unnecessary air vents, the Beachcomber has more speakers for the stereo system.
The dashboard resembles a cockpit with spherical instruments that include a liquid sprung compass embedded in the steering wheel, an artificial horizon instrument which shows the angle of the car along its longitudinal and transverse axis and the Center Rail which connects the front and rear seats providing a special fastening system for components like external music players, storage boxes, shelves, armrests and integrated cable duct for connecting devices to car’s entertainment system (it provides power too).
I’m not going to go into too much more detail about the MINI Beachcomber. It’s a concept car and no production is scheduled. I’ve been told that future production models will have some of the Beachcombers elements and technological advances . It has a price tag of 1 million dollars. The freaking grill costs $300,000 alone. That is why they kept everyone except key staff and the models far, far away from the car. It’s a bit of a shame as I would have like to sit down in it. I’m in love with the seats. Autoblog has a great gallery of images including closeups. I’ve distilled what elements I’ve found attractive about the car in this post but if you are so inclined you can download the full 11 page MINI Beachcomber Concept brief in PDF format to see what I left out.
Here is a video produced by MINI in which, Director of MINI Design, Gert Hildebrand talks about the Beachcomber at the Detroit Autoshow 2010.
If you want to see the MINI Beachcomber Concept at Toronto Autoshow 2010 you need to go Sunday, Feb 13, it’s heading overseas on Monday.
