Janelle Monáe in Toronto

Janelle Monae performed in Toronto for the Indie Awards at the Royal York Hotel on March 13, 2011. It was everything I thought it would be and more. Check out these great clips from the show Intro + Dance Or Die Locked Inside Tightrope Wonderland And she went crowdsurfing which was pretty fun to watch image: Ashley Bartlett

Thom Browne Fall Winter 2011 – 2012

I know what you are thinking. Thom Browne, really Anita! If you take away the show (the styling, makeup and presentation) from this collection there are a lot of amazing separates to be found, especially the jackets. I personally found the show visually interesting. The huge fake eyelashes on the models were distracting though. Some of the more showy pieces were based on the egg and cages. From a show perspective they were interesting but nothing you would wear. Style.com has some video from the show that will give you an idea of how the presentation played out. I wish I attended. Andrew and Andrew from Paper Magazine have a great little video too The plaid outfits were my favourites. Thom Browne isn’t for everyone at first glance, you really need to push past the visual presentation to see the gems in this collection. Complexgeometries Fall Winter 2011 – 2012

Complexgeometries held their fall winter 2011 – 2012 presentation at The Westside Gentlemen’s Club. That’s right, a strip bar. Designer Clayton Evans had colour and collaborations on the mind for the season. It’s a surprisingly colourful fall winter 2011 – 2012 collection for Complexgeometries and I’m not complaining. The textile evolution of the line into fabrics other than jersey is progressing with charmeuse, silk, mohair, suede and wool. Collaborations came in the form of jewellery and shoes. Complexgeometries partnered with fellow Montreal designer, Mireille Boucher of Harakiri. See the Complexgeometries fall winter 2011 – 2012 presentation video by Jason Last. The towering platform boots came out of the minds of LD Tuttle and Complexgeometries. Clayton tells me they are 9 inches high. I’m simultaneously scared and salivating. It’s an extra 9 inches of height. Who the hell knows what I’ll use it for but I want it. I’d probably scare small children and some men. Do these qualify as Manrepller shoes? Ha Ha.  Thankfully there are some more reasonable short boots available in the collaboration …

Proenza Schouler Fall Winter 2011 – 2012

It was crazy print time again at Proenza Schouler for fall winter 2011 – 2012 collection. Their influence came in the form of Native American blankets that were picked up on a road trip from Santa Fe to Wyoming. I liked this collection for many of the same reasons I like all Proenza Schouler collections. It was bright and loud. They aren’t afraid of prints and place them at the forefront of their designs. See the entire Proenza Schouler fall winter 2011 – 2012 fashion show. They got some great handbag additions for fall winter 2011 – 2012 I’m not a velvet fan, so the series of velvet pieces didn’t appeal to me. The last two dresses kept me from writing that whole section of the collection off. images: vogue.com

Maceo Parker in Toronto on Feb 11, 2011

Thanks to @SoundboardTO, official Massey Hall & Roy Thomson Hall twitter account I won tickets to see funk legend Maceo Parker in Toronto. Maceo Parker (pronounced /ˈmeɪsiːoÊŠ/; born February 14, 1943) is an American funk and soul jazz saxophonist, best known for his work with James Brown in the 1960s, as well as Parliament-Funkadelic in the 1970s. Parker was a prominent soloist on many of Brown’s hit recordings, and a key part of his band, playing alto, tenor and baritone saxophones(source). Since the Nokia N8 takes such great video I decided to utilize it for this talent.

Yvan Rodic in Facehunter on NOWNESS.com

The Facehunter isn’t a blog I follow really. Street style blogs aren’t my thing even though I appreciate their impact and importance to fashion, blah, blah. I know who Yvan Rodic is of course and I’ve seen some of his work. This video from Nowness.com was a interesting look at what he does. He’s pretty cute and charming in this video. Inside the Macallan Scotch Tasting

I was introduced to Macallan Scotch Tasting through a tasting event at The Hazelton. It was a great experience and I learned to appreciate scotch. Over the course of the years I ended up at two more scotch tastings with Macallan. I took some video of the last one so you could get an idea of what these tastings are all about.

Prada Fantasy Motionbook for Fall Winter 2010 – 2011

I’m all over Prada Spring Summer 2011 right now. I love the collection and accessories. The video ad campaign is on loop at my house. Prada is good at the marketing that goes into the brand. The spring summer 2011 collection sold me on the runway. The video and print ad campaign turned it into lust. Prada had a great lookbook for fall winter 2010 – 2011 which they recreated in video form. I’m hoping something like this happens for spring summer too.

Classic Cocktails: A 1960s Soirée with Janie Bryant

The LCBO presented Classic Cocktails: A 1960s Soirée event which was held The Carlu in Toronto. Janie Bryant, the Emmy Award Winning Mad Men costume designer was in attendance and talked about the impact of 1960s fashion on current pop culture. I attended the event and managed to get some video of Janie talking. The lighting is so bad in the Carlu so please forgive how dark it is. I’m not going to apologize for the loud and rude crowd that talked over Janie Bryant the whole time. Poor form Toronto, poor form. I didn’t know what Janie looked like before the event and she is beautiful. She’s someone who can make St. John’s look hot because I would have never suspected they did her dress.

Boys of Milan & Paris Fall Winter 2011

Thank god for Tommy Ton and Justin Wu. They bring us beautiful male models lip syncing on camera. Swoon. I’m very thrilled to be presenting another video in collaboration with Justin Wu. He’s worked extremely hard this time around gathering all the boys in milan and paris for this special video and i’m so grateful he’s done it again for Jak & Jil blog. Thank you to all the male models who participated and made this video even more special. Enjoy!!! You can all thank me later.

BROSE Spring Summer 2011 Video

The Brose spring summer 2011 video added a new dimension to the clothes for me. I posted photos from the Brose spring summer 2011 collection last year and I now loved things that I had passed over. I’m still salivating over the strapless feathered dress. You can try your hand at winning a Brose dress by entering the “Long day at work contest”.

Janelle Monáe and Karl Lagerfeld

I’m trying to organize my gmail account so I’ve started adding filters. The number of ways to filter PR pitches is working pretty good I think. Now that I’m getting a bit organized I rediscovered this great video of Janelle Monáe and Karl Lagerfeld chatting that Marisa from Atlantic Records send me way back in mid December. It’s pretty cute. I love, love Janelle Monáe. Amazing musician with perfect style. This post just isn’t complete without some videos and photos. Cold War Tightrope Tightrope live on Letterman. Jil Sander Spring Summer 2010 Accessories

I loved the colours and prints in the spring summer 2011 Jil Sander womenswear collection. I didn’t enjoy the actual clothing too much. It’s the silhouette. It’s too oversized for me and only waifs can pull off such a look. The accessories are amazing though. The prints are so perfect. I was more interested in the handbags. The shoes not so much as they were complimentary but not very exciting to me. Check out the Jil Sander Spring Summer 2011 Womenswear show. And check out the Jil Sander Spring Summer 2011 Menswear show which I thought was brilliant. images: style.com

geekiviews: Zi8 Pocket Video Camera

I received the Zi8 Pocket Video Camera just in time for LGFW this year. I’ve used the HD video feature on the Olympus E-PL1 so I was curious how these dedicated video cameras function. I guess the Zi8’s main competitor is the Flip video camera. I’ve never used the Flip camera before but I’ve held it. The Zi8 is a bit wider but they are very close in size. The camera has the following features: Capture video in 720p HD at 60 fps, or 1080p HD at 30 fps holds a up to 32GB SD/SDHC card External microphone jack takes 5MP 16:9 Widescreen HD photos built-in image stabilization 2.5 colour LCD screen Internal USB connector, no extra cables Includes HDMI cables so you can hook it up to your HDTV Included KODAK Li-Ion Rechargeable Digital Camera Battery Compatible with PC and MAC Includes video editing software The Kodak site has a great video that explains the features that the Zi8 offers. In perfect lighting the Ki8 takes some great video. It packs a lot of …
