TÔ Long-Nam Fall 2009 – 2010 Lookbook

TÔ Long-Nam Fall 2009 - 2010 Lookbook

I received an email from designer, TÔ Long-Nam. Of all the information I’ve received from designers over the years here, this was the best crafted email I’ve read. I appreciated the attention the detail and biographical information immensely.

He was born in Viêtnam, grew up in Munich and went to school at the Academy of Fine Arts Berlin-Weissensee in Fashion-Design. Long-Nam worked with famous stylists Victoria Bartett and Patti Wilson. His forey into fashion design started as a design assistant for Lanvin menswear.

Positive encouragement after participating in the 21st International Fashion Competition prompted him to start his own line. He has also collaborated with designer Alessandra Facchinetti while she was at Valentino. While working on the Spring 2010 collection he is working for Superfine London, a denim company I’m very fond of.

All this information was great, but I would have been sold at the photos. Long-Nam says this about his Fall 2009 – 2010 collection:

Force has always been a keyword in the design principles of TÔ Long-Nam. For Fall/Winter 2009 the collection found inspiration in the human body and, in particular, the intricacy of the muscles within human anatomy. The soft architectural structure of each muscle, their unique composition, their diversity and their ability to function harmoniously to produce graceful motion formed the foundations of the collection. Based on this understanding, the collection shows a variety of garment constructions borrowing from the gentle and elegant contours of muscle design. Curved seams, round finishings and tactile fabrics united with female proportions delivers a collection which is powerful and modern, but which remains forever feminine at its core.

As the owner of an Honours B.Sc in Kinesology, the muscular aspect of the collection is very appealing to me. I like the way those images have been incorporated into the clothing. The clothing has some masculine qualities that I like.

The collection boasts an array of constructed signature jackets whose architectural designs are executed with an attention to detail that exposes an innate understanding of couture. The essence of the design remain in its transversality. They were designed for any kind of woman, for a maximum number of situations, both work and play, which increasingly seem to be performed in the same outfits. The jackets are cut with a discreet fitted waist to accentuate the female form. The round shapes of the seams follow the female morphology while the back panelling displays the collection’s aesthetical translation of muscle design to fashion design. The jackets employ the use of different fabrics to reflect the diversity of muscle fibres. These materials have been chosen for their varying degress of tactility. The collection uses a mixture of luxurious fabrics to offer a variation of black color shades such as: perforated silk satin, silk satin, cashmere/wool blend, a wool gabardine blend with a silky finishing and a lacqued crêpe de chine. Soft fabrics are combined with raw ones and matt fabrics with shiny ones, in order to sharpen the harmonic contrast between the arrangement of straight lines and round curves.

When I got home I decided to do some googling and discovered that TÔ Long-Nam is carried by Holt Renfrew. The Spring 2009 collection is in the store. His name is absent from the designer list for Fall 2009. I will be keeping my eye out for TÔ Long-Nam’s Spring 2010 collection.

Lanvin Resort 2010

Lanvin Resort 2010

I’m a total Lanvin fangirl so it’s pretty much guaranteed I’m gonna like the collections. Lanvin showed a much more sporty style for Resort. Lots of running shoes and jumpers. Yes, I approve of both. The colours are so vibrant and rich.

Lanvin Resort 2010

I really liked the presentation of the collection. It seemed more like a lookbook than runway show. Models were paired together or alone and in motion. I’m a sucker for the in motion shots.

Lanvin Resort 2010

There were the more sporty items paired with Lanvin sneakers and then they were the elegant pieces. The beautiful dresses we are use to drooling over.

i got: A Marni Bracelet

I was treated to belated birthday gift, A Marni Bracelet. I’m in love.

IMGP3850

You could imagine how excited when I saw this box. I’m convinced that half the retail cost of luxury goods are for packaging.

IMGP3851

The packaging was pretty cool. Not only was the box wrapped in grey ribbon, there was a pouch for the bracelet inside.

IMGP3855

I’ve always liked Marni’s jewellery. It’s clunky and colourful. Definitely statement making and it will wear you if you don’t have the personality to match. This bracelet is more subdued than others, I love it’s simplicity and colour scheme.

Balenciaga Resort 2010

Balenciaga Resort 2010

Balenciaga Resort 2010 was a mixed bag, linen, short party dresses, slim pants, volume, ruffles and prints . Like most of the resort collections I loved, there was a great pant selection.

Balenciaga Resort 2010

I loved the linen pieces. The fabric was substantial and raw.

Balenciaga Resort 2010

The collection as a whole didn’t really mesh with me like last seasons. There were pieces that felt completely out of place like this beautiful grey dress. The pattern in the fabric wasn’t recreated in any other pieces.

Balenciaga Resort 2010

It was still a great collection, just not as cohesive and directional as past efforts. Definitely not as futuristic as past collections. The super short tiered party dresses are super cute. The shoes, my god, the shoes.

Holt Renfrew Fall 2009 - 2010 Menswear Media Preview

You have read about my adventures at the Holt Renfrew Fall 2009 – 2010 Womenswear Media Preview. I took a lot of pictures of things that appealed to me. Well the Men get the same treatment because I attended the Fall 2009 – 2010 Menswear Media Preview. That was a treat. I love menswear and wish I could include more of it in my coverage. It’s just impossible to be able to incorporate anything but the stray menswear post like this.

Holt Renfrew Fall 2009 - 2010 Menswear Media Preview

The preview was a smaller affair when compared to the Womens. You realize the lack of true menswear media in Toronto. There was some overlap in the attendees but there were a lot of people I wasn’t familiar with.

Holt Renfrew Fall 2009 - 2010 Menswear Media Preview

Barbara Atkin, Vice President, Fashion Direction for Holt Renfrew spoke briefly before Lanita Layton, Vice President, GMM Menswear took the podium. She spoke about menswear trends and how the economy has changed men’s style. The banker look is out and men are trying to distance themselves from all the negative connotations that are associated considering the world economic situation. Men also have many choices to make personal statements beyond the days of wearing your personality on your tie.

IMGP3776

Band of Outsiders button up in Holt's Magenta

It’s true Men have more options these days. I would have liked to see more colour for men but as a retailer I can how it would be a tough sell to the brown/black/grey/navy wearing masses out there. A bright note was the Band of Outsiders button up in Holt’s Magenta. It’s exclusive to Holt Renfrew and I want one for myself.

IMGP3744

Moncler Gamme Blue x Thom Browne

The most fashion forward item of the night went to Moncler Gamme Blue x Thom Browne outfit. Fans of the Thom Browne look will love his partnership with Moncler to produce this puffy suit. I’m kinda partial to the puffy jacket myself. It was good to see a lot of exclusive partnerships with Holts and some of the fashion brands. Canada Goose in Japanese fabrications not available in North America will be available through Holts. (Edit 06/16/09: I talked to Uncle Otis and they will be carrying the Canada Goose jackets in Japanese fabrications also. So Holts isn’t exclusive here)

Holt Renfrew Fall 2009 - 2010 Menswear Media Preview

Trends for men according to Holt Renfrew are:

  • The Top Coat
  • The Check Suit
  • The Club Jacket
  • The Leather Jacket
  • The Plaid Shirt
  • The Patterned Pant
  • The Knit Toque
  • The Bowtie
  • The Wintip
  • The City Hiker
IMGP3735

Dr. Denim Cassette tape shirt.

As I was pursuing the racks I came across a few things that I liked for myself, Dr Denim plaid shirts and ts, Paul Smith boots and John Varvatos Converse. I have to point out the glaring omission of Philip Sparks in the media kit. He wasn’t listed in the Design List in both the Womenswear and Menswear media kit. His pieces were part of the preview also.
