Fashion sCares

I attended Fashion sCares. It was a blast getting dressed up and everything. I chronicled my adventure at blogTO.com. You can find the direct link here, Fashion sCares: The Costume Report.

I was the one and only Grace Jones and here was my inspiration and the execution.

I didn’t have the jacket, which looks like Issey Miyake so I decided to forget that and do the tried and true jumpsuit. I think I’m a fan of jumpsuits now, they are a lot of fun. Until you have to go to the bathroom. I paired the jumpsuit with a scarf to emulate the look of the jacket. Danielle from Final Fashion totally helped me out with the mask. If it wasn’t for her I wouldn’t have been able to pull this look off. My next thanks is to Gail McInnes who did my makeup and completed the look.

Here are my photos from the night. After looking at them again, I realize that I did a song and dance for Rex Harrington that night. (Read the blogTO post, you’ll know what I’m talking about)

Flourish for Reena 2008

IMGP2150
The 2nd annual Flourish for Reena event took place last week.

The Reena Foundation is the charitable arm of Reena; a non-profit social service agency dedicated to integrating individuals who have a developmental disability into the mainstream of society.

Reena was established in 1973 by parents of children with developmental disabilities, as a practical alternative to institutions. Reena strives to create and maintain an environment that respects and promotes dignity, individuality, independence and freedom of choice.

Flourish is a yearly event hosted by The Reena Foundation which provides funding towards education programs and respite services to people with developmental disabilities within the GTA. These essential programs are maintained through the Toby and Henry Battle Development Centre in Thornhill. Your generous ticket purchase to Flourish will help to keep the services alive and accessible to our clients in need.

It really was a wine lovers paradise at Flourish for Reena. There were 16 wine vendors from around the globe with a focus on Chile. They all setup their tasting stations and away everyone went. I’m a beer lover so I didn’t take advantage of the wines as much as I probably should of. I did think the Wine Dating game was kinda cool.

Hosting the night was The Wine Ladies, Georgia and Susanne. They are radio personalities on 1050 CHUM. They wandered around carrying these huge red wine glasses. They were huge, like bigger than my head. I can only assume they were quite drunk by the end of it.

We were entranced with the ‘Sabering Champagne‘ sword performance by Master Sommelier Doris Bradley. It’s a great party trick that requires lots and lots of practice according to Doris. (Yup, that’s her in the video below, I wish I had one from the event)

Here is the science behind the trick

In more scientific terms, it is the meeting of the glass lip (annulus) at the top of the bottle just below the cork (bouchon) with a firm tap of a sabre’s edge and at the weakest point of the glass seam in the bottle. When performed on a suitably chilled bottle of Champagne (shampAn´), the cork and glass annulus fly away, spilling little of the precious Champagne. The pressure inside a bottle of Champagne (100psi) ensures that no glass falls back into the bottle making it safe to drink the spoils.(source)

The food was supplied by Greg Couillard of the Spice Room, Encore and Bite Catering. It was all very delicious, although Danielle and I missed the mini burgers that were going around.

EDIT: I can’t believe I forgot to write about something I thought was very clever, A cigar company that delivers. They even include a a beautiful ceder box. The cigars are from Nicaragua. I thought it would be a good gift for cigar people.

So this was my first swanky fundraiser invite. The Mad Hatter’s Ball was an event for Virgin Unite, the not-for-profit entrepreneurial foundation of the Virgin Group. This is the second year this event has taken place in Canada. It also takes place across the world in other major cities.

Virgin Unite is the entrepreneurial foundation of the Virgin Group. We work with great partners all over the world to develop new approaches to social and environmental issues.

We’re fortunate that Richard and the Virgin group pick up our overhead costs – so 100% of all donations go directly to the frontline where it is needed the most.

We believe that the only way we are going to drive the scale of change that needs to happen in the world, is if we revolutionise the way that the business and social sectors work together.

We want to use all the entrepreneurial energy across the Virgin Group to help drive this revolution.

Richard Branson didn’t spend much time with us as he had to leave as he was trying to break an Atlantic crossing record with his children. His flight got moved up and he wasn’t able to direct the auction like scheduled. It was later abandoned.

Kathy Griffin was the host and she is really, really funny. I was totally blown away. I didn’t think much of her before but I’m a fan now. Marky Ramone djed for us as we dined. We were entertained by Natalie Imbruglia, GrinderGirl, Acrobazia, Bjorn Again and Fiest. I left before Bjorn Again closed, I hate Abba. Feist was amazing live and Acrobazia astounded everyone with their feats of strength. They were poetry in motion.

It’s too bad he was available for the auction as it wasn’t all that exciting. I was disappointed to see that Fund a Start-Up in Africa auction item wasn’t bid on. Toronto really didn’t open up it’s wallet. Perhaps it’s just a reflection of the market and the general uncertainty of everything. If I was only a millionaire, then the start up and the Necker Island Experience would have been mine.

I didn’t recognize many people in the crowd. It was a lot of businesses with tables and the rich people of Toronto. Q9 Networks had my favourite table because most everyone was dressed up. The Mad Hatter’s costume was perfect (pictured above), down to the purple gloves. I was told it started with the hat and ballooned into something more. It was hilarious to see the Mad Hatter sans costume in the Path the other day. I had to do a double take, but then we do share a building.

It was a well organized event and very entertaining. I definitely got a look through the looking glass so to speak.
