Rodarte designers, Kate and Laura Mulleavy visited Toronto for a Personal Appearance and party at The Room in The Bay. The excitement was building up in the weeks preceding the event because Toronto hasn’t had any major designer visits recently (No, that Kim K person doesn’t count as a designer).
As with most of these events, I don’t care about what everyone is wearing because I’m touching the designer’s samples. I love the opportunity to feel the garments and examine the workmanship. Rodarte’s clothing is so well made and the materials are lush.
I didn’t even speak to Kate and Laura. I had no interview questions. I didn’t want to do the “I really like your work” and subsequent photo opp. I feel a bit sorry for designers in these situations as I liken it to being in a Zoo. They seemed happy to meet fans and take pictures before being whisked off to dinner with VIPs
I really like the Van Gogh print dresses from the Rodarte Spring Summer 2012 collection. The Fall Winter 2012 – 2013 collection didn’t invoke the same feelings but I love their shearling jackets.
Check out the rest of my photos from the event in the slideshow.
Earlier this year I snapped some beautiful Rodarte dresses that were on display during the Anna Dello Russo event. I’ve never posted them and it seems appropriate for this post. These dresses are stunning.
Schutz’s creative director is luxury shoemaker Alexandre Birman. Shoemaking is in the blood and 39 years ago his father founded the Arezzo Group. The company is made up of three brands: Arezzo (lower-priced collection), Schutz(the contemporary collection) and Alexandre Birman (luxury collection). Alexandre started designing Schutz 15 years ago and it’s finally making it was to North American markets. The shoes are all made in Brazil.
I attended the Schutz Fall Winter 2012 – 2013 preview and got a look at the extensive collection.
The celebration for the launch of the Roger Vivier: Process to Perfection exhibit at The Bata Shoe Museum brought Bruno Frisoni, Creative Director of Roger Vivier to Toronto. The next day he was entertaining socialites and a few media types at Holt Renfrew for a private lunchtime event. There were many Roger Vivier fans in the audience who were loving the women’s Fall Winter 2012 – 2013 handbag and shoe collection. I’ve never seen so many buckles on shoes in my life.
Bruno Frisoni is so adorable in this video. I didn’t get a chance to talk to him and just gawked instead.

A few weeks ago I attended the Ecco Fall Winter 2012 preview at the Brill Communications head office. Ecco is one of those companies that responded to the changing face of the market. They noticed that customers are more style savvy and made efforts to target that market. I think they’ve done a great job in making Ecco a fashionable choice for many.
The Ecco Fall Winter 2012 – 2013 collection has three overall themes.
Active Vibration – Active Vibration illuminated the spaces where sport meets fashion. Clean and functional lines, in combination with sporty comfort and colour blocking, describe the shoes in this part of the runway. Shoes from this category are for an active lifestyle, focused on health and wellness.
Aesthetic Being -There was much focus on esthetics and elegance and a softer approach to classic minimalism in this part of the collection. “Less is more†and classics featuring fashion trends from several decades. Slow fashion, old school and even masculine styling were key words describing a number of the autumn/winter ECCO styles.
Nordic Breathing – Finally, ECCO®’s AW12 runway was offering shoes to all of us who live and breathe Scandinavian lifestyle in terms of great, natural materials – in particular leather. And leather will certainly be in the air when the leaves start falling from the trees this fall. Being one of the world’s leading leather manufacturers, ECCO will be on top of the agenda.
This season sees dark purple, saffron and amber make strong appearances in the collection. I loved the colour selections this year and the boots. Ecco boots have always interested me more than the heels. This season the short and tall boots are excellent. The photos in this post show my favourite items from this season.
It pains me to say this but I like something from Roberto Cavalli. I’m a bit shocked to admit it but these Wild Diva sunglasses are pretty killer.
Skilfully crafted on the front for a second skin effect, it expresses an impetuous temperament through bold lines and strong traits, underscored by a crocodile/ostrich/shagreen print.
Bold chromatic contrasts, from the winter colours that swing from black tobacco to purple and back, to the stronger and more extreme pink, violet, yellow and acid green colours, all with matching or contrasting shaded lenses to add emphasis to the fashion essence of these sunglasses.
These sunglasses made their debut on the Fall Winter 2012 – 2013 runway. I’ll be including these in my fall sunglasses hunt.
“World MasterCard Fashion Week is one of the world’s most anticipated fashion events bringing together established names, emerging designers and luxury brands,†said Betty DeVita, President of MasterCard Canada. She adds, “Fashion is a key element of our Priceless Toronto and global Priceless Cities initiative. Through Fashion Week we are celebrating Toronto as Canada’s quintessential destination for all things stylish. We encourage everyone to experience all that Toronto has to offer.â€
In addition to the new title sponsor, the FDCC brought in Maybelline New York as the make up sponsor. Maybelline New York is part of L’Oreal Group so this is an interesting change of brands. Torontonian, Grace Lee, Lead Make Up Artist Canada will be the head makeup guru for the week.
“I am honoured to represent this amazing brand and use my experience to forecast the beauty trends for Fall at World MasterCard Fashion Week,†says Lee. “I’m most excited about showcasing new products backstage – the looks I’ll be creating with the designers will be so accessible and affordable for the consumer. Canadians will learn firsthand how to make runway beauty wearable.â€
Finally, Redken 5th Avenue Canada is the new official hair sponsor for WMCFW. Toronto backstage team will be lead by Jorge Joao, Redken Global Performing Artist, professional hair stylist and]salon co-owner of KOI Hair Studio.
“Working with designers to create a memorable look that helps build their fashion story is key,†says Joao. “The Redken team is committed and we look forward to delivering new silhouettes, textures and styles for Canadian fashion.â€
This is some major switching of the guards happening here and I’m very curious to see what these new players bring to Toronto Fashion Week. I’m excited about fashion week again. I like this feeling.
