Sophie DeFrancesca in Phantasmagoria

Phantasmagoria is an exhibit featuring work by Sophie DeFrancesca. It will be featured at the Lausberg Contemporary Gallery from June 11 – July 19, 2009. Inspired by the icon dresses of the twentieth century Sophie De Francesca’s figurative sculptures are crafted in such a way that implies the production of ornament and fabric at the same time. Sheathes of galvanized wire mesh are transformed into ethereal confections that transcend the hard, commonplace materials they are made from. A provocative evocation of the female subject, De Franscesca’s work locates a maternal and sexual female identity by probing the conventional understanding of gender and sexuality. I was able to see a preview of some of Sophie’s work at the Brose Fall Winter 2009 – 2010 preview. Her work is just phenomenal. Ketel One Vodka Tasting

I used to think that Grey Goose was great vodka. That was until I attended the Ketel One Vodka tasting put on by Matchstick. It was held at the swanky Spoke Club. A rep for Ketel One explained a bit about vodka in general and the whole process of how this family owned company makes it’s Vodka. We tried 3 different types of vodkas ranging in price. They were Absolute, Grey Goose and Ketel. Absolute was like swill after comparing the Grey Goose and Ketel. Ketel won out because it’s a little smoother than Grey Goose. It’s actually cheaper too. See more photos from the night at the Matchstick flickr account.

Holt Renfrew Holiday Window Unveiling Video

Holt’s put up the video of the Holiday Window Unveiling with Macy Gray and Patti LaBelle. I attended the opening and Macy Gray was hilarious. She was pissed drunk. Patti LaBelle on the other hand was the consummate professional and was absolute perfection. Check the video here, Holt Renfrew Holiday Window Unveiling. It’s too bad it doesn’t embed. Holt’s should have a youTube account.

Beautiful housewares; absolutely stunning and expensive as all hell. It has to be seen to be believed. I’m …

Buy Local Week 2008

During BUY LOCAL WEEK December 1-7, think LOCAL FIRST! Ten Reasons to Buy Local 1. Money spent at locally-owned businesses goes around longer in the local economy as local business people pay for all kinds of local services, spend their profits and pay taxes locally. Purchasing locally helps grow other businesses and the Toronto tax base. 2. Local businesses produce more income, jobs, and tax receipts for local communities than big box stores do. 3. Non-profit organizations receive an average 350% greater support from local business owners than they do from non-locally owned businesses. 4. Supporting local businesses preserves the economic diversity of our communities and the unique character of our neighborhoods. 5. Local businesses have a reduced environmental impact because they can make more local purchases requiring less transportation. 6. Local businesses yield two to four times the economic benefit to you, the local resident, compared to non-local businesses. 7. Local businesses are owned by people who live in this community, and are more invested in the community’s future. 8. Local businesses often hire …

Canstruction Toronto 2008

So every year in at my work, they setup entries for Canstruction. Canstruction® is the most unique food charity in the world! A foundation of the Society for Design Administration (SDA), Canstruction® is a design/build competition currently held in cities throughout North America. Teams of architects, engineers, and students mentored by these professionals, compete to design and build giant structures made entirely from full cans of food. The results are displayed to the public as magnificent sculpture exhibits in each city where a competition is held. At the close of the exhibitions all of the canned food used in the structures is donated to local food banks for distribution to emergency feeding programs that include pantries, soup kitchens, elderly and day care centers. Since its inception, ten million pounds of food has been donated to aid in the fight against hunger. The 2nd annual Flourish for Reena event took place last week. The Reena Foundation is the charitable arm of Reena; a non-profit social service agency dedicated to integrating individuals who have a developmental disability into the mainstream of society. Reena was established in 1973 by parents of children with developmental disabilities, as a practical alternative to institutions. Reena strives to create and maintain an environment that respects and promotes dignity, individuality, independence and freedom of choice. Flourish is a yearly event hosted by The Reena Foundation which provides funding towards education programs and respite services to people with developmental disabilities within the GTA. These essential programs are maintained through the Toby and Henry Battle Development Centre in Thornhill. Your generous ticket purchase to Flourish will help to keep the services alive and accessible to our clients in need. It really was a wine lovers paradise at Flourish for Reena. Virgin Unite Canada – The Mad Hatter’s Ball

Virgin Unite Canada – The Mad Hatter’s Ball So this was my first swanky fundraiser invite. The Mad Hatter’s Ball was an event for Virgin Unite, the not-for-profit entrepreneurial foundation of the Virgin Group. This is the second year this event has taken place in Canada. It also takes place across the world in other major cities. Virgin Unite is the entrepreneurial foundation of the Virgin Group. We work with great partners all over the world to develop new approaches to social and environmental issues. We’re fortunate that Richard and the Virgin group pick up our overhead costs – so 100% of all donations go directly to the frontline where it is needed the most. We believe that the only way we are going to drive the scale of change that needs to happen in the world, is if we revolutionise the way that the business and social sectors work together. We want to use all the entrepreneurial energy across the Virgin Group to help drive this revolution. Richard Branson didn’t spend much time with …

Doing the Theatre thing

At the request of The Grumpy Owl I attended a theatre production with him. I don’t really do theatre but I said sure. He’s writing for the blog Mooney on Theatre. The play we saw was called Fibber at Theatre Gargantua. It was interesting. I think you should read the owl’s review at Mooney on Theatre, FIBBER- Theatre Gargantua.

Tastemakers Lounge at TIFF

I got a media invite to see the Tastemakers Lounge at the Toronto International Film Festival. Toronto, ON — Back for its fourth year, the Tastemakers Lounge will once again take up residence at the InterContinental Toronto Yorkville Hotel during the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Housed in the Portman Room on the second floor of the hotel (220 Bloor Street West), the theme of this season’s lounge is Ohhh Canada! – an homage to all the accomplishments achieved thus far by Canadians in film. Twenty companies have been selected for the opportunity to introduce talent and other ‘tastemakers’ to their products. As in previous years, the mandate is to feature a unique group of products and services, including Canadian companies and brands that visiting talent may not be familiar with. “The Tastemakers Lounge will highlight the latest trends in innovative interior design. We have selected exciting and creative work that will be inspirational to the sophisticated celebrity set,” said Jason MacIsaac, owner and founder of Ministry of the Interior. The lounge design will …

Stella Artois Légère Launch

I got this really cool invite to the Stella Artois Légère launch. It was at Circa and there was lots of Stella on hand to try out. I’m not a big light beer fan but this was okay. It was very light tasting and like most light beers it reminded me of water. Before Wclef Jean “played” for the crowd, there was an acrobat. I think Wclef’s DJ did most of the work because they really didn’t perform anything. Wclef was more of an M.C. that night.

geekiviews: Eleven Minutes

I saw Eleven Minutes with Danielle during Hot Docs. It was the night of the TTC strike to be exact. This feature documentary follows fashion designer, Jay McCarroll’s year-long journey designing and preparing his first independent runway show and selling of his clothing line to stores after wiining the first season of Project Runway. This in-depth, raw and humorous documentary explores the conflict of balancing commerce with art, fame with talent, and reality-TV with actual reality. It was an excellent movie. I think anyone who really wants to be a designer should see it. It’s stripped down and raw, there is no glamorizing of his whole ordeal. It was funny as all hell and Jay had me pissing my pants. I also loved the crazy PR lady that everyone was afraid of. It’s a real emotional rollercoaster from beginning to end. I definitely recommend it to any fashion fan or curious bystander. The Toronto Fashion Incubator is sponsoring a screening of Eleven Minutes on Tuesday, June 17 at 7:00pm in Theater 222, Innis College, 2 …
