geekiviews: Cromwell and Cruthers Shaving Oil

This edition of geekiviews features a guest blogger, The Grumpy Owl. He’s a guy and the Cromwell and Cruthers Shaving Oil is for men. So it made sense that he review it instead of me.

I hate oiling up my body. It’s the sort of the thing that one should have a person for. Preferably young, buxom and foreign. So, when Geekigirl gave me a plastic vial of Cromwell and Cruthers Shaving Oil, I viewed the product with some trepidation.

Oil is bad enough but shaving is worse. The last time I combined the two, I spent an entire weekend cleaning hair, blood and assorted perfumes from my sheets. It was not an experience I was looking to repeat.

But geekigirl quickly explained that I was to use this product to shave myself. Specifically, my face. While alone.

I might not like oil or shaving but I do love my face. So I decided to give this shaving oil a whirl. Having used it for the past few weeks, I now feel competent to review the stuff.

It’s pretty good.

At four dollars and fifty cents a vial, it’s reasonably priced. Certainly much cheaper than hiring a barber to shave your face and not much more expensive than a can of foam. Although it lacks the proto-erotic thrill of having a man stroke your throat with a razor, it smells quite nice and provides a close shave. It also lasts quite a long time.

But I wouldn’t expect anyone to believe mere words. After all, I’ve been bribed with a five dollar vial of shaving oil. A lot of bloggers come cheaper than that. So I’m providing you with photo evidence.

Nicholas Kirkwood - Autumn/Winter 08

These are not for the faint of fashion. Kirkwood is genius.

An alumnus of prestigious design schools Central Saint Martin’s and Cordwainers, 27-year-old British designer Nicholas Kirkwood launched his eponymous collection in Spring 2005. The collection of architecturally inspired pieces with a blend of genres subverting the relationship between tradition and modernity instantly won the attention of Grace Jones, Daphne Guinness, the late Isabella Blow and Cecilia Dean of Visionaire as well as rave reviews from industry insiders…Kirkwood’s shoe making talent has meant he is much sought after by the design community. Recently French fashion house Chloé employed him to consult on their AW 07 collection. Kirkwood has collaborated with an array of established and emerging designers including Gareth Pugh, Zac Posen, Phillip Lim, Doo Ri, Boudicca, Belstaff, Basso & Brooke and Louise Goldin.(source)

Help Child Soldiers

I received a package with a very powerful message the other day from War Child.

War Child Canada is a registered Canadian charity dedicated to providing urgently needed humanitarian assistance to war-affected children around the world. War Child Canada helps generate awareness, support and advocacy for children’s rights everywhere.

I was suppose to Help Child Soldiers. The package was wrapped in brown paper and contained the cardboard box pictured. I was confused at first and then I saw the word Uganda. It started to click.

IMGP2625

Inside the package was this poster. And another card with block letters stating “We’re supporting the problem if we’re doing nothing to stop it,”

Help Child Soldiers - War Child

It was unnerving but not as unnerving as this video that you should watch.

1. Over 66% of casualties in war are children
In the Democratic Republic of Congo, 2.7 million children have died as a result of conflict In Afghanistan, 1 in 4 children will die before the age of 5 due to war

2. 300,000 (estimated) children are affected
Boys and girls under the age of 18 – are today involved in more than 30 conflicts worldwide. Children are used as: Combatants, messengers, porters and cooks and for forced sexual services

3. Your cell phone may be inadvertently funding the death toll!
Every cell phone contains a mineral called coltan, which is mostly deposited in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Illegal coltan exports are a primary source of funding for a conflict that has claimed over 5 million live

4. War Child’s programs look at “preventing”
By offering economic opportunities to young people and their families, as well as education opportunities and peace building courses/activities

5. War Child also focuses on “reintegration”
Former child soldiers have access to our education, psychosocial and livelihoods, and child rights programming
