NYC La.Ga Bag for Krv Kurva, by Sarah Parris

Ex-blogTOer Ryan LaFlamme told me about this company he works for called 66degrees a few months ago. 66degrees.com is based out of Toronto and the mandate is to “bring an array of very exclusive, mostly one-of-a-kind or limited edition products made by designers and artists around the world to people like you… people with smart tastes, people who want something different, something unique.” So I’ve been checking the site from time to time to see what’s new. This week, this bag landed in my inbox. I was smitten; it’s very unusual. The pattern reminds me of the New York City skyline. It has an interesting story also.

NYC La.Ga Bag for Krv Kurva, by Sarah Parris

Visualized by one of England’s most sought after designers, and hand-made at a women’s prison in Portugal, this ultra-exclusive handbag is available only at 66degrees.com.

The La.Ga Bag, a trademark of Lisbon-based design studio Krv Kurva, is distinctly European in design. The bag marries two unique design ideas: the artistry of the bag’s graphics, and the manufacturing. Each bag is given a unique artistic layout by a different guest designer, in limited runs of only 199. Past designers have included artists and graphic designers from Spain, Portugal, Argentina, Brazil and the U.S. Shaped like a large teardrop, the bag is constructed from semi-rigid Dupont Tyvek (water, radioactive, and bio-hazard resistant, of course). Thinner than one millimeter and weighing less than 40 grams, this bag is able to hold up to 55kg easily, while still being machine washable. With use, the bag becomes softer and more malleable. Krv Kurva’s latest design is now a 66degrees.com exclusive. “NYC” is a bold interpretation of the New York skyline at twilight by Sarah Parris, from English design studio Saville Parris Wakefield (whose designs have graced some of the finest fashion and design houses in Europe, including Alexander McQueen, Christian Dior, Jil Sander and Stella McCartney). NYC was unveiled, to great fanfare, at 2008’s International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York, with the first 30 distributed to friends and admirers of Krv Kurva and its sponsor, Designboom.Manufacturing of the La.Ga bag is also a one-of-a-kind process. Krv Kurva’s founder, Jorge Moita, wanted to do more than just make art; he wanted to make positive social change. Each La.Ga bag is hand made by the inmates of a female prison in Tires, outside Lisbon, Portugal. The collaboration provides the women, many of whom are poor and uneducated, an opportunity to learn skills and earn a living when they leave prison. Each NYC La.Ga bag in this limited edition run of 199 is hand-made at the Tires Prison Centre in Tires, Portugal. Each bag will ship with a certificate of authenticity, numbered and signed by the creator.

Hunter is watching me on the web

Hunter Boots finally got it’s act together and updated their website. It’s much nicer now, easier to navigate, better pictures and fast. They’ve even have a spot on their site that aggregates blogs posts, youtube videos and flickr pictures that mention Hunter Boots. I noticed a bunch of traffic coming from the hunter site and I found out that they linked to me and it was front and center of the main “Hunter On The Web” section.

The only thing that bugs me about the site is that the store locater is for the UK only. However, the North American Distributor is based out of Toronto

geekiviews: Secret Slimmers

geekiviews: Secret Slimmers

Ashworth Associates sent me a Secret package. I’ve been trying them out for this post. The package included items for the Secret Slimmers shapeware line: thigh & tummy shaper panty, high waist shaper panty and the tummy shaper pantyhose. They also included a pair of red leggings (pictured) and patterned black tights. Almost all of the items were in black, the high waisted shaper was nude. Ashworth Associates gets a check in my good books. There is nothing more disappointing than receiving nude hose.

It may surprise some but I’m a fan of shapewear. For some items of clothing, it can really clean up a silhouette (hello, unforgiving jersey). I have a pair of skinny black dress pants that I won’t wear without it. It’s not about losing inches, it’s about smoothing. I’ve bought Nancy Ganz shaperwear in the past and it’s not cheap. Secret’s offerings are at least reasonable at $9 – $25. I’ve never purchased pantyhose from Secret before so I wasn’t sure what to expect.

I now swear by their tummy shaper pantyhose. I don’t sheer hose that often, things are completely opaque or patterned to the hilt in my closet. The waistband stayed put for me and that was fantastic. You’d think that because it’s a tummy shaper it would be uncomfortable but it wasn’t constricting. I forgot I was even wearing them, they were like a second skin. The thigh & tummy shaper panty fit well and was comfortable enough to wear all day. It didn’t shift around and did a very good job of keeping itself out of my mind for the day.

The leggings weren’t 80 den weight like I’m used to but they are great for wearing in the spring and fall. I don’t say summer because I don’t wear leggings without my boots. I hate leggings. I only buy leggings because they have colours I really want.

I wasn’t a big fan of the high waist shaper panty. It covers you from the top part of the thigh to under the breasts. The waist band on this one rolled on me occasionally. I’m going to give this one another shot to redeem itself when I break out the white dresses this summer. Underwear and white clothing is always a nightmare.

Secret has won me over, it’s a good alternative to more expensive options out there. I will be looking for more of their tummy shaper hose for sure.

Lucinda’s List: Toronto’s Top Ten Style Cliques

So Lucinda McRuvy of Rags and Mags had decided to map out Toronto’s Top Ten Style Cliques a la Style.com. I thought the style.com feature was pretty lame, mostly because I don’t live in NYC and I find the whole thing pretty high school (it never seems to end). That being said, this is Toronto, I live here and I find this list very amusing. Yes, your’s truly is mentioned and I’m surprised that Lucinda even knows my name. She’s never acknowledged my presence.

Earlier this year, style.com chronicled New York’s top style clans, courted controversy with their inclusions (and exclusions!), and drew attention to the segregated world of fashion. The article got me wondering about who shapes the Canadian style landscape. What style clans to we have? Are they as defined and closed as those in New York?

Surveying and spying at Spring events, I surmised Toronto’s top trendsetting teams and observed those hovering around. Before I announce my Top Ten Style Cliques, I must address the hovering wannabes because it is so unsophisticated and must be curtailed. Those in the know can detect insincerity and sycophantic tendencies a mile away, so those people will never find a fitting fashion clique.

If you admire someone’s work or style, by all means, tell her. Everyone loves a compliment. But no one loves a stalker. If you are real, the object of your fashion affection will reciprocate. By no means should you pop up uninvited to any event hosted by your preferred couture crew; you should always be invited.

If you’re new on the style scene, don’t just insert yourself into the center. Sit back, watch, and analyze. Read The Art of War if you must. There is a fine line between interlocutor and obnoxious, pushy bore. Patience is definitely a virtue and will be rewarded with gradual acceptance on the scene.

Whose patience, determination, and style has reaped rewards? Read below to discover Canada’s hautest troops, but keep in mind that membership is fluid and most cliques are on friendly terms. All do support Canadian fashion.
