Givenchy Spring Summer Couture 2012. What else is there to say but wow.

Riccardo Tisci was influenced by Fritz Lang’s Metropolis and Aelita for the Spring Summer 2012 Haute Couture collection.

The crocodile gown took some 350 hours produce. The atelier would disassemble a skin, bleach it, re-dye it and remount it on tulle. It’s just incredible.

I love that this shoot had a basketball theme.  It was shot in the oldest gymnasium in Paris.

I wasn’t a fan of the oversized nose rings and earrings. They looked more painful than beautiful.

Le sigh, these shoes are divine.

I hate celebrity fashion but here is a photo of Zoe Saldana wearing one of the gowns from the collection.

geekiview: Simons Online Shopping

A few weeks ago I received an email from a web consultant that was working with Quebec based Simons. He asked me to write a review of the shopping experience and would provide me with a $50 gift certificate to get started. Simons has always been a must visit on my trips to Montreal. I accepted his offer and hence this post.

The gift certificate came to me via email which I thought was excellent considering a physical card really didn’t serve a purpose in this situation. The Simons.ca website has a clean, simple layout and lots of white space. I hate websites will lots of bells and whistler or ones that use flash and play music automatically. It shouldn’t take the user many mouse clicks to get product into a shopping cart and I tend to give up on sites with lousy user interfaces. The Simons.ca user interface provides all the search functions I expect: colour, brand, price and date added.

I purchased the Trompe-l’oeil plunge-neck sweater and a large cowl neck striped tunic. I spent more than $50 but was pleasantly surprised that in addition to the regular credit card payment options you can choose Pay Pal or Interac. I used Interac to pay the difference and it was super easy. Simons offers free shipping for orders over $40 and free returns. They also gives you the option to pick up your order in store. I also like that I didn’t have to create an account to process my order.

Delivery was very fast. I ordered on the Friday and had my package on Wednesday. Some online retailers don’t put any effort into packaging. I think packaging is one of the most important aspects of an online shopping experience. I automatically think higher of companies that think of both the online and offline experience for the customer. My order came in a perfectly sized box branded with the Simons logo in its signature green. The clothing was wrapped in branded tissue paper and sealed with a Simons leaf sticker.

Included in the box was one of the coolest branded tote bags I’ve ever seen. The tote is included in orders for a limited time only. The last aspect of the packaging that I really liked was the envelope the invoice came in pictured above.

So, I give Simons.ca a big thumbs up for their e-commerce experience. I love that Canadian companies getting into online shopping cause I really hate shipping fees and duties. They are unavoidable in some situations but I’m happy that more options for Canadians are becoming available.

Iris Van Herpen x United Nude Spring Summer 2012 Haute Couture Shoes

Iris Van Herpen and United Nude teamed up to create the most intense footware for her Haute Couture Spring Summer 2012 show. If I was a collector of expensive, elaborate shoes these would be at the top of my wishlist. I can only look with my shoe budget.

Models stepped out in “Fang” shoes with ten sharp teeth to each foot – the product of van Herpen’s fifth successful collaboration with United Nude. The shape of the wedge is so complex that each one consists of fiberglass and carbon fiber, made in a slow molding process

Phosphorescent Invasion, the LouLou Jean by Hudson – Spring Summer 2012

Phosphorescent Invasion, the LouLou Jean by Hudson - Spring Summer 2012

If I was 19 again, I would be all over the Loulou Tuxedo Crop Super Skinny Jean by Hudson. The style is inspired by LouLou de la Falaise, Yves Saint Laurent’s muse. She was a big influence in the design of Le Smoking. The thing that makes these tuxedo inspired jeans special is the glow in the dark neon strip that comes to life under black light. The rave going 19 year old me would have freaked.

Here is a trippy video that shows the denim in action created by Hudson.

The Loulou Tuxedo Crop Super Skinny Jean comes in three colourways: Dark Navy with Phosphorescent Orange stripe, Burgundy with Phosphorescent Pink, and Olive with Phosphorescent Yellow.

Holt Renfrew is the place to get this denim from and it will retail for $265. They will be hitting the shelves this February.  On February 10th, there will be a big launch event during NYFW in the Meatpacking District including street art installations, videos and a big party at Scoop.

Toronto Fashion Week’s New Players

FDCC

The Fall Winter 2012 – 2013 fashion season is approaching. The FDCC has cleaned house and the event formerly called LG Toronto Fashion Week Beauty by L’Oréal Paris is now called World MasterCard Fashion Week. Yes, one long name for another long name. I hate to say that both are kinda obnoxious but events need sponsors and that jazz. However, I also lament the lack of Toronto in the new name and with the event in general. I’ll probably go back to using TEFW (Toronto Extended Fashion Week) to describe our two weeks of fashion a season. Apparently, I called this new fashion week partnership way back in November in a drunken conversation I don’t remember when Danielle visited.

“World MasterCard Fashion Week is one of the world’s most anticipated fashion events bringing together established names, emerging designers and luxury brands,” said Betty DeVita, President of MasterCard Canada. She adds, “Fashion is a key element of our Priceless Toronto and global Priceless Cities initiative. Through Fashion Week we are celebrating Toronto as Canada’s quintessential destination for all things stylish. We encourage everyone to experience all that Toronto has to offer.”

In addition to the new title sponsor, the FDCC brought in Maybelline New York as the make up sponsor. Maybelline New York is part of L’Oreal Group so this is an interesting change of brands. Torontonian, Grace Lee, Lead Make Up Artist Canada will be the head makeup guru for the week.

“I am honoured to represent this amazing brand and use my experience to forecast the beauty trends for Fall at World MasterCard Fashion Week,” says Lee. “I’m most excited about showcasing new products backstage – the looks I’ll be creating with the designers will be so accessible and affordable for the consumer. Canadians will learn firsthand how to make runway beauty wearable.”

Finally, Redken 5th Avenue Canada is the new official hair sponsor for WMCFW. Toronto backstage team will be lead by Jorge Joao, Redken Global Performing Artist, professional hair stylist and]salon co-owner of KOI Hair Studio.

“Working with designers to create a memorable look that helps build their fashion story is key,” says Joao. “The Redken team is committed and we look forward to delivering new silhouettes, textures and styles for Canadian fashion.”

This is some major switching of the guards happening here and I’m very curious to see what these new players bring to Toronto Fashion Week. I’m excited about fashion week again. I like this feeling.

Givenchy Spring Summer 2012 Ad Campaign

Can I have a Givenchy surfboard please?

I love the clash of two things I love in this ad campaign, Givenchy and Surfing.

I’ve never surfed before (only Boogieboarding in Barbados as a child) but I’m really attracted to life by the water and board sports.

Mariacarla Boscono is looking great in the ads and this makes me happy since I really didn’t like her YSL SS12 ads.
