Converse x Maison Martin Margiela – Fall 2013

I talked about changing up my shoe game but Converse keeps calling me back. This collaboration with Maison Martin Margiela is pretty awesome.

“Converse is thrilled to partner with Maison Martin Margiela. The collection perfectly embodies each
brand’s spirit of individuality and self-expression unifying Converse and Margiela’s conviction of
unleashing creativity,” says Matt Sleep, Converse Senior First String Designer.(source: Press Release)

Changing Up My Sneaker Game with New Balance and Palladium

Changing Up My Sneaker Game with Palladium

Changing Up My Sneaker Game with Palladium

Fall weather means parting with my sandals and covering up with closed toe shoes. My sneaker collection loves fall because I forget about them in the summer and they sit unused. Normally my sneaker game consists of Tretorns and Chucks of various styles. I have a thing for high tops and I have my Vegas Adidas and a great pair of Alexander McQueen for Puma kicking around too. This fall I wanted to change the silhouette up in my shoe game and that came in Palladium and New Balance form.

Changing Up My Sneaker Game with Palladium

Changing Up My Sneaker Game with Palladium

Palladium is a French company started in 1920. Their famous Pampa boot was born in 1947 and the French Legion adapted them for their use. I’ve been receiving their press releases for a few years now but never saw the shoes in person. That changed this summer when I went to a Fall Winter 2013 preview. I really like the shape of the shoes and the different treatments they came in. Palladium loves colour and you can find the perfect colour for you in canvas or leather. Lucky for me, Palladium sent me a pair of Blanc Hi’s in Dream Blue in the summer. With the weather changing, I’ve finally got to put them to good use. I was initially concerned that they might not be comfortable. I always wear orthotics with my Chucks because the sole offers no support. The Blanc Hi’s were super comfortable and I didn’t need to wear my orthotics with them. The colour is perfect right now and I’m afraid of them getting too dirty. I got my eyes on the Blanc Hi in red leather now.

Changing Up My Sneaker Game with New Balance

Changing Up My Sneaker Game with New Balance

I bought these New Balance sneakers because they were on sale at The Hudson’s Bay for $36 (I know, what a deal!). New Balance has always gotten positive buzz from people and I always loved that they liked to add a fashionable colour element to their design. I wanted a camo pair of New Balance but they weren’t on sale so I decided for these purple one. Wearing these New Balance sneakers was an adjustment to me. I never wear sport shoes out in public, only at the gym. Well, I’ve made an exception for New Balance. These are the most comfortable pair of sport shoes I’ve ever owned and when those camo ones go on sale, I’ll be buying them for my collection. If you are into customization, New Balance offers that service online and you can create the pair of your dreams.

Changing Up My Sneaker Game with New Balance – And yes this post was a perfect reason to use this photo

I haven’t figured out how to pair these sneakers with dresses yet and I don’t think I’ll ever find that sweet spot. Right now I’m keeping it very casual with rolled up denim as you can see in my photos. You can purchase both New Balance and Palladium on their respective online sites. I find New Balance fits small and I needed an 8.5 instead of my usual 8. Palladium fit true to size. However, if you want to try them on you can find New Balance in a ton of stores besides The Hudson’s Bay. Palladium you can find at places like Over the Rainbow and Town Shoes.

The Shangri-La Hotel in Toronto is celebrating it’s first anniversary. Together with Sunny Fong of VAWK they unveiled new Lobby Lounge attire for the female staff that he designed.

“I wanted the design to truly reflect a hybrid of my brand and what I feel Shangri-La Hotel, Toronto represents. I was inspired by the art work in the lobby, the Ming vase tea library and the ornithological theme that is prevalent in the hotel and the Zhang Huan ‘Rising’ sculpture,” said Fong of his inspiration. “When I met with Richard Cooke, we wanted something that seemed almost theatrical, so naturally I knew the silhouette had to be both sophisticated and sexy. I felt my desire to custom create a bold graphic print inspired by the Ming vase would absolutely make a dramatic statement.”(source:Press Release)

The design is inspired by architecture and design of Asia. The dress is a take on the tradition gipao. The print reminds me of blue and white porcelain that began development in 14th century China.

I really like the design of the dresses and they fit perfectly with the Shangri-La aesthetic. Great job Sunny, I hope they let you redesign the men’s uniforms too.

Anna Sui Nail Collection

Anna Sui Nail Collection

Anna Sui Nail Collection – Nail Colour N

Anna Sui has some of the prettiest nail polish packaging on the market. I’d buy it for the packaging alone. The Anna Sui Nail Collection has 45 shades and styles.  The Nail Colour N Collection comes in a black bodice shaped bottle. It comes with a more traditional nail polish brush for regular application. I attended an Anna Sui beauty preview and received a sample of Nail Colour N 402 which is a very dark red with some gold glitter. I really liked the formula, the brush and it stayed chip free for a week.

Anna Sui Nail Collection

Anna Sui Nail Collection – Nail Art Colour N

The Nail Art Colour N Collection come in a black bodice shaped bottle with a ruffle dress for easy identification. It has a brush that is flat with short and firm hairs to allow for nail art applications. I haven’t tried the polish in this collection yet but it claims the solid shades only needs one coat and that the glimmer shades are very sparkly and shiny. I’m very curious to try this nail polish out because of the one coat claims and the brush. I’m a two coat minimum girl sometimes three depending on the shade. I just love rich, rich colour.

Anna Sui Nail Collection

Anna Sui Nail Collection

Both the Nail Colour N and Nail Art Colour N collections are 3 Free, contain resins for a glossy finish and have Anna Sui’s signature tea rose scent. Rounding out the Anna Suit Nail collection is a base coat, top coat and nail treatment oil.

I received a number of swatch images from the preview and I’ve included them in the gallery below.

Nail Colour N, Nail Art Colour N, Base Coat and Top Coat all retail for $15. 34 colours from the collections are available at Shoppers Drug Mart, Pharmaprix and Murale (in store and online). The full collection will be available at select Hudson’s Bay stores.

Polygale Jacket by Moncler

While I’m enjoying what probably is the last heatwave of the summer, I’m also thinking of the upcoming fall and winter seasons and the fashions it brings. Yes, I’m still obsessed about owning a Moncler winter coat. This Polygale Jacket by Moncler would be perfect for hitting the ski hills as I like longer winter jackets for running around the city. This one has a detachable Raccoon fur collar.

Mulberry is Now Open in Toronto

Mulberry Toronto Bloor

Mulberry Toronto Bloor

Mulberry opened their first two Canadian stores recently. The British company, founded in 1971, is known for their luxury leather craftsmanship. Rural English references in their designs results in an aesthetic they define as ‘Le Style Anglais.

“Toronto is a key location in Mulberry’s North American expansion,” says Carl Barbato, President of Mulberry USA. “With the country’s expanding luxury market and consumer base, creating a strong presence in Canada is the next natural step for Mulberry.”

Mulberry Toronto Bloor

Mulberry Toronto Bloor

Toronto is the lucky home for the stores found on Bloor Street West and the powerhouse Yorkdale Mall. Before opening in Toronto, I didn’t have much hands on experience with the brand. I’ve posted about their sweater craftmanship before and I’ve seen some of their bags in Holt Renfrew. Shortly after the opening, I was invited to check out the Bloor Street location to get to know the brand.

Mulberry Toronto Yorkdale

The Mulberry store finishing is beautiful. Designed by British architects, Universal Design Studio they use timber, limestone and oak as features to complement Mulberry’s dedication to craftsmanship and luxury. Both stores carry Men’s and Women’s leather goods as well as Womens ready to wear. Mulberry fans will be glad to know that IT bags Bayswater, Alexa, Del Rey and the gorgeous Willow will be available for purchase in Canada.

Touching the Mulberry leather goods just reinforced how beautiful they are in person. I’ve always liked their classic styles and they would make for a great investment bag. I’m a sucker for brands that take their craftsmanship heritage very seriously. Check out this post about how they construct the Willow handbag.

One of the lovely Sales Associates had me trying on Mulberry coats from the Fall 2013 ready to wear collection. I love playing dress up in things I really can’t afford! The Made in Italy ready to wear collection is very pretty with intricate embroidery and complex prints. Even the buttons are special. I’m also now in love with Mulberry shoes and the Bow High Heel Pump is my obsession.

You can see more photos from my trip to Mulberry including multiple handbag shots in the gallery below.

3.1 Phillip Lim x Target

I was on set with 3.1 Phillip Lim for Target the other day for a photoshoot and I happened to get an up close look at the upcoming collection. I like the Target collaborations. I have a couple dresses from the Jason Wu collection that I still wear and love. I was so disappointed that Target didn’t land in Canada before the Parabal Gurung collaboration hit the stores. It looked really good. 3.1 Phillip Lim for Target is the first designer collaboration to hit Target stores in Canada. I don’t have details about store availability yet, but check back for more updated.

3.1 Phillip Lim x Target

‘One of the reasons I wanted to collaborate with Target is because I felt that together we could create a collection that would inspire – one that is cool and chic, but still very accessible’

3.1 Phillip Lim for Target is a sophisticated and elevated collection that is both beautiful and functional. Rooted in a classic fall palette of neutral tones and prints, the collection features a variety of versatile, affordable pieces that modern women and men can wear on-the-go, while remaining effortlessly chic. (source: press release)

I mentally selected my top looks from the photos that hit the Internet last week and that didn’t change after seeing them in person. For Women, I’m not interested in the Boom print but I love the paper floral print items. All of them. I also really like the green and blue colour blocked pieces. Rounding it out is the simple black and white dress. The navy camo print in the mens collection is pretty great too. While the handbags don’t make my top pick list they are very well done. They are non-leather versions of some of his hottest luxury handbags.

There are no women’s shoes in the collection. The ones pictured are from 3.1 Phillip Lim collection proper. Only the men get 3.1 Phillip Lim x Target sneakers. i want: Knit Mesh Coat by Simone Rocha

Knit Mesh Coat With Collar by Simone Rocha

Knit Mesh Coat With Collar by Simone Rocha

Whenever I end up liking something pink, it’s usually a perfect garment. This is one of these times. This jacket is just gorgeous. Simone Rocha is an Irish designer who debuted in London for the Spring 2011 collections. The coat is a knitted wafer mesh that doesn’t really show up in these photos very well. If you check the Moda Operandi site you’ll be able to zoom and check out the beauty of the fabric. I love a great full skirt so it’s no surprise I love this coat. Knit Mesh Coat by Simone Rocha is $1,465 and is available online at Moda Operandi. A little birdy (Okay it was Nicholas Mellamphy’s Instagram) told me that Simone Rocha is also available at The Room at The Hudson’s Bay. I’m pretty sure this coat is one of the buys!

Check out the Simone Rocha fall winter 2013 fashion show. See this coat in motion.

Mademoiselle C Trailer

I love me a good fashion documentary and the next movie to take us all by storm will be based on Carine Roitfeld!!

Carine Roitfeld ran French Vogue for 10 years, building a reputation as one of fashion’s most influential movers. Her inner circle of friends includes Donatella Versace, Tom Ford, Karl Lagerfeld, Mario Testino, Riccardo Tisci, Diane Von Furstenberg, and Alexander Wang. Yet few people outside the fashion world have heard of her…until now.

Mademoiselle C chronicles Carine’s launch of her new magazine “CR Fashion Book.” It gives a rare inside glimpse at the inner workings not only of Roitfeld’s professional world but also her personal life. It is a film about transition, letting the audience watch as Carine moves to New York, starts a new business, and prepares to become a grandmother. And of course, its filled the the models, celebrities, and eccentric personalities that make the fashion world so entertaining.

The film is set to get a release date in September 2013 in the US. No word on Canadian distribution.

Cynthia Doll Dress by Collectif

A new clothing shop opened in my neighbourhood called Rosie the Rebel Retro Boutique. My fashion radar spotted it out of the corner of my eye on the way home one day. I jaywalked across Bloor to check it out. Fashion is a calling, literally at times. They carry Rockabilly, Psychobilly and Retro clothing. I soon realized this place would be really bad for my wallet after trying on this cherry dress and crinoline combo. The cherry dress didn’t win my heart this round, it was a 50s style dress from London based, Collectif.

Established in the year 2000, Collectif is an independent 1940s and 1950s inspired vintage reproduction brand based in London. We create garments and accessories that are inspired by genuine vintage patterns, knitting patterns, and fabrics from our extensive archive. (source: Collectif website)

The Cynthia Doll Dress makes me feel as if I should be attending a sockhop with my little white poodle. It’s perfect for the office and I’ll be able to wear it in all seasons. It comes in blue and dusty pink. It retails for £89.50 on the Collective website but I paid around $100 (I think?) for mine at Rosie the Rebel.

Cynthia Doll Dress by Collectif

Here’s my elevator selfie. I didn’t manage to get a proper full length shot of the dress (no photographer SO here). I paired the Cynthia Doll Dress with my Marni x HM sandals and Zara bomber. If I wanted to take the 50s look a literally I should have worn my white Derby shoes by Rokin or my lavender Worksong brouges.

Ruched tulle and silk dress by Christopher Kane

Ruched tulle and silk dress by Christopher Kane

Now this is an exposed midriff dress I can get behind. It wouldn’t be safe for work but I’d wear it everywhere else. Thank god for Christopher Kane and PPR money. The dress is very vampy and it’s with reason, Christopher was inspired by Bela Lugosi and The Bride of Dracula. The dress is made out of black tulle and silk. The neckline, cuffs and waist are elasticized. It’s beautiful and lot cheaper than some of the Dolce & Gabbana dresses I tried on the other day. The Christopher Kane Ruched tulle and silk dress is available on net-a-porter for (le sigh) $1,910. You can find Christopher Kane at The Room at The Bay in Canada.

Mary Katrantzou x Moncler Fall 2013 – 2014

Oh Hi, Mary Katrantzou x Moncler jackets. What’s that? You want me to stop eating for months on end so I can afford you and your yards and yards of downy goodness. Honestly, that’s sounding like a really good idea because my mind is blown by your stunning beauty. I was really upset when Sacai’s design term was up at Moncler. However, Moncler being the absolute fucking best brought in Mary Katrantzou to take the fashion crazy functional outwear to the next level. They are magnificent and expensive!

Mary Katrantzou x Moncler Fall 2013 - 2014

Mary Katrantzou x Moncler Fall 2013 – 2014

For the Moncler M collaboration, Mary Katrantzou took inspiration from the duality found between the interiors of a classic sports car and those of a gypsy caravan. Silhouettes were inspired by the sculptural shapes of Katrantzou’s AW12 collection and the research on car interiors. The chiffon gowns of Katrantzou’s AW12 show are converted into ultralight nylon coats, allowing the experience of wearing a ball-gown to become an everyday possibility and the sculptural silhouettes mimic the shape of a car seat, capitalizing on the versatility of the down jacket. Katrantzou also worked on bespoke brocades for this collaboration, which combine the exceptional technical abilities of Moncler with a hand crafted artisan textile.

Antonio Lopez is one of the great fashion illustrators and M∙A∙C has created a collection based on his work and muses. I’m absolutely in love with the packaging.

The legendary fashion illustrator’s vibrant energy, brazen attitude and love of life inspire a striking colour collection featuring: Eyes x 6 Palettes, Lips x 3 Palettes and Face Palettes perfect for highlighting natural tones and contours. The Future in Store Webseries

I’m in love with this new webseries from PayPalCanada called The Future in Store. It talks about the technology developments in the retail industry. It’s hosted by my golf buddy Amber Mac and Doug Stephens, Retail Guru.

Episode 1 features
1. Kate Spade Saturday: http://www.saturday.com
2. eBay Now: http://www.ebay.com/now
3. RedLaser: http://redlaser.com
4. Story: http://story-thestore.com/store

I have to admit that the Kate Spade Saturday shop wall is a really good looking installation. After seeing the eBay Now spot, it looks like personal delivery is going to be a big trend. Hurrier just started in Toronto and it will be interesting to see what other stores they partner with. Red Laser could be very, very dangerous to window shoppers!

Episode 2 features
1. NeighborGoods: http://neighborgoods.net/
2. Fancy: http://www.fancy.com/
3. PayPal innovation at the eBay Inc. Commerce Innovation Centre at New York City
4. Nordstrom: http://shop.nordstrom.com/
5. Nomi: http://www.getnomi.com/

I found Nomi the most interesting in episode 2. It’s very Big Brother but I’d be curious to see how the data is applied to changes in merchandizing and store design.

I’ll continue to post more of the series as they become available.

Dolce & Gabbana is Now Open on Bloor Street

So, Dolce & Gabbana quietly opened on Bloor Street late last week. I happen to know the Assistant Manager and I dropped by to check out the new Designers on the block. Dolce & Gabbana took over the old Louis Vuitton space and structurally it hasn’t changed much. Womenswear, evening wear, jewellery, fragrances and accessories are downstairs. Upstairs is all for the guys with ready to wear, accessories and shoes on hand. There is even an $85,000 watch for sale!

Dolce & Gabbana Bloor Street

Dolce & Gabbana Bloor Street

There were so many beautiful things in the store that I had to sneak in a little dress up action. First up is the classic Dolce & Gabbana bustier dress. Everyone who saw my photos on Instagram liked this one the best. It’s a great dress but bustiers don’t tend to fit me right.

Dolce & Gabbana Bloor Street

Dolce & Gabbana Bloor Street

I managed to try on a couple gowns. I love this white and black lace one. It was about $7500. It was light as air and full of movement.

Dolce & Gabbana Bloor Street

Dolce & Gabbana Bloor Street

Another beautiful dress was his black bustier gown. The bustier is hidden underneath the silk. I forgot to tie the dress and make a nice bow in the back. This baby will set you back $9000. I didn’t want to be a dick, so I limited myself to three items to try on. I wanted to try everything though.

Dolce & Gabbana Bloor Street

Dolce & Gabbana Bloor Street

The store is pretty gorgeous and not overdone like I expected. They will carry a lot of ready to wear in the store so there should be a selection of those crazy mosaics dresses from Fall 2013 coming in soon. Right now there is a lot of Pre-Fall collection available. The shoe selection is smaller than I expected but look out for those lace pumps and the floral boots. Just amazing! Check out the rest of my photos of the new Dolce & Gabbana store on Bloor Street in the gallery below

i want: Octopus Necklaces by Lost Apostle

A few weeks ago, I went to an event for Etsy Canada. We were introduced to some of Etsy’s biggest Canadian partners and talked about their Affiliate program. I received a personalized gift bag at the end of it. It was curated with me in mind and featured some designers the Etsy folks we up my alley. That’s how I discovered Lost Apostle.

Lost Apostle is based in Montreal and creates bronze and silver jewellery for the person who doesn’t want something dainty and feminine. We are talking animal skulls, anatomical hearts, flying picks, syringes, feathers and hand grenades.

Octopus Necklaces by Lost Apostle

Octopus Necklaces by Lost Apostle

I received the Human Skull necklace in bronze from the Etsy Canada gift bag but I’m kinda obsessed with Lost Apostle’s Octopus pendants. They come in Silver and Bronze and there is also a choice of leather straps instead of gunmetal. Too adorable.

If that isn’t enough, there are Lost Apostle Octopus earrings to match. I’m dying. Lost Apostle is pretty affordable also with prices starting around $30 and going up to $300. The Octopus necklaces range in prices from $42.24 to $58.08.

June 2013 – Secret Garden – Versailles

The Château de Versailles, emblem of Dior’s tradition, hosts a new tale which brings to life the Dior Fall 2013 collection. The chateau and its park abound with well-kept secrets. The heart of the royal land conceals an extraordinary world of poetry and color: in the depth of its mysterious woods a secret garden blooms out of sight, inhabited by flower-women. From the Grand Trianon to the enchanted forest, Versailles becomes the picturesque backdrop of a dreamlike tale.

I’m lucky this season for my favourite models headlining campaigns this season. Mariacarla Boscono is one of the stars of the Christian Dior Fall Winter 2013 – 2014 Ad Campaign. I’m not big on the whole campaign so I’ve only included the two I like.
