OBJECT by George Antonopolous for Danier Spring Summer 2012

OBJECT, the collaboration from George Antonopolous and Danier Leather kicks it up a notch for Spring Summer 2012 with lots of colour. I’m drooling.

I’m impressed by this collaboration. George, how the fuck did you get Danier to agree to all this colour? Canadians aren’t know for their colourful ways and I applaud Danier for listening to George and taking this colour risk. I hope Canadians get it and jump into colour this summer.

I seriously love the whole collection.

Bravo George and bravo Danier. I can’t wait to see what else you guys come up with in the future.

Ask A Geek – Canadian Brands Making Winter Coats – Updated November 13, 2012

Cdn Spirit Down Jacket
Sometimes readers ask me questions. If they are of value to all my readers I post them online. If you have a question, please feel free to submit it using the contact form. I’ll definitely do my best to answer it.

I want – I got reader @ThebergeSwim tweeted:

@ThebergeSwim - @geekigirl I’m looking 4 a warm winter coat Preferably fashionable & NOT black. Would like to support local designer #ThebergemovestoToronto
Me – @ThebergeSwim budget?
@ThebergeSwim - @geekigirl four to six hundred. Possibly a lil more if totally awesome.

Fashionable and functional are trade off that has to be made for a Canadian winter. I tend to side with function during this time of year. My recommendation is buy a long down jacket so you don’t have to layer as much. However, here’s a selection of Canadian companies with winter jackets and coats that will cover both spectrums and between.  Some of these companies might not have fall offerings online yet, but should soon.

RUDSAK – Lots of leather options here. Montreal based but has a store on Queen Street West.

Moose Knuckles Canada – Moose Knuckles is outside of your budget but I included it because it’s Canadian.

Canada Goose. – I bash the Canada Goose a lot.  Not because of it’s function, I can say that it’s a great winter jacket.  My problem is that it seems like everyone in Toronto has one.  I call it the Toronto uniform.  I guess I just have a problem with conformity.  However, many Retailers carry the Goose including sportinglife.ca, Canadianicons.ca, Holt Renfrew and Over the Rainbow.

Downtown Down – Both Cdn Spirit and Johnny Yiu can be purchased on Downtown Down. I purchased a Cdn Spirit down jacket a few winters ago and it’s amazing.

Mackage – Montreal based but they are carried at Holt Renfrew, Over the Rainbow and online at ssense.com

Orb Clothing – Vancouver based clothing company. Makes great winter jackets for snowsports as well as more casual options. I wore an Orb jacket during my trip to Whistler this year.

Mountain Equipment Co-op – Definitely more on the functional side but affordable.

TNA – TNA down jackets were the Canada Goose of their time with young women and teens. They aren’t as popular anymore but you’ll still see a lot of people with them. You can get these at a TNA store or Aritiza.

Soia & Kyo – More fashion than function here. If you aren’t looking for a down jacket there are lot of options here.

m0851 – Another company with great leather products. They have a store in Yorkville.

Danier – Can’t forget Danier, they’ve really upped the style quotient of late.

Joe Fresh – I don’t know how warm their down jackets are but they do make very affordable ones in bright colours. Store at Queen and Bathurst

Krane – Amazing menswear by Toronto based Ken Chow. I think women can pull the jackets off too.

Philip Sparks – I’m currently dying over this Philip Sparks coat.

UPDATE: The moron in me forgot a great Canadian Coat company, Smythe

Updates August 5, 2011
Stacey ZhangShe also has a store on Queen Street West Store on Queen street has closed. Online Shopping available on her website.

CMFR Canada – There are no retail outlets for these guys listed on the site and no online store as of yet. They have a ton of stockist now. Due West, Sydney’s, Ssense.com.

LUNDSTRÖM

Updates August 6, 2011
Ewanika – She usually has 1 or 2 styles of coats in her fall collection.

Update May 1, 2012 – This post is in dire need of a update.

Sentaler Luxury Alpaca Outerwear – Thanks for nudge to update this post

Company of Adventures – This link is dead but it’s sold at The Bay.

Toast Skirts – Not a coat really but still good for cold weather

Update November 4, 2012

OSC Cross – Designed and made in Canada. Available online

PDG by Plenty – West coast retailers house brand. Available online. Retail locations in BC

Nobis – available at The Show Room and online.

Fadedsoul.com – Just discovered this Canadian online shop where you can find brands Nobis and Moose Knuckles

Jacob – Has a selection of wool and down filled coats. Available in store and online

Update November 13, 2012

A reader let me know about Montreal based Sicily Clothing. I never heard of them before but they look like another good alternative to the Goose

Well, I think I’m tapped out of ideas but I feel I’m missing companies. Let me know in the comments!

Mark Fast for Danier

Mark Fast for Danier
The Mark Fast Fall Winter 2011 – 2012 featured a collaboration with Danier. Mark created some amazing leather pieces in the show. Some of these runway pieces have been developed into a small capsule collection for sale at Danier this fall.

I missed the Danier preview and didn’t get to see the collection in person but here are my top picks of the collection.

As you can tell I love the coats and the pants. Even the cropped leather overalls has me happy. I can see myself pairing them with my platform boots from the Gap.

DANIER x Greta Constantine SKIN Launch Party

Danier x Greta Constantine Skin Launch

DANIER x Greta Constantine collection is so good. I had no inside access to these designs this time around.  So, the debut of the collection at the Neubacher Shor Contemporary gallery was a complete surprise. The gallery is a beautiful space with adjustable white walls, a huge window and exposed brick. It’s a great space for hanging artwork with the high ceilings.

Danier x Greta Constantine Skin Launch

The six look collection ranges in price from $399 for a sleeveless bolero with exaggerated lapel to $999 for an asymmetrical, draped coat with rounded back. Key colour motifs include black, slate, eggplant, walnut, and lava, in a variety of fabrics ranging from Italian lamb leather to silky suede. As part of the capsule, Kirk and Stephen designed a contemporary take on the obi belt, a welcome addition to each look.

“We sought to find a happy medium between fashion and function; to offer silhouettes that were appealing to the eye and still flattering on a variety of different body types,” explain Kirk and Stephen.

The collection features several jacket types in leather and suede options. All the jackets came in different colour ways. There were two long jackets style:  a suede asymmetrical draped coat with a raw edge ($549) and a leather asymmetrical draped coat with rounded back ($999). The two shorter jackets include a suede asymmetrical draped coat  and an asymmetrical kimono style wrap coat ($869).  Kirk and Stephen also designed the perfect leather obi belt to go with all the garments.  Out of all the jackets, I really fell in love with the grey suede asymmetrical draped coat with a raw edge.  The short purple asymmetrical draped coat has a strong siren song too.

Rounding out the collection was a leather shift dress ($499) in slate grey, red and black options. The sleeveless Sleeveless bolero with exaggerated lapel ($349) is the perfect little topper. It’s my second favourite piece in the collection.

The high ceilings and white walls were perfect for the debut of  the DANIER x Greta Constantine SKIN ad campaign.  Long time Greta collaborator, Gabor Jurina shot the campaign.  It featured newbie model, 17-year-old Madison(Ford).

DANIER x George Antonopoulos Fall Winter 2011 – 2012

Danier
The DANIER x Greta Constantine Fall Winter 2011 – 2012 collaboration was just announced but few weeks ago there was another announcement from the DANIER team.

DANIER continues their Canadian designer collaborations by announcing a partnership with renowned fashion stylist and director, George Antonopoulos. F/W 2011/12 will see a debut design capsule collection, OBJECT, sold at select DANIER retail locations across Canada. Object will be comprised of sophisticated separates for women, bringing a singular aesthetic to the Canadian consumer.

“My philosophy behind OBJECT was creating modern classics in leather that are effortlessly integrated into anyone’s wardrobe. Attainable and affordable, the designs are investment pieces translated in leather to create a new language of dressing,” says Antonopoulos.
Antonopoulos has earned an impressive reputation within the Canadian fashion landscape through his work as both a creative director and stylist with publications such as Flare, Fashion and Cheek Magazine. DANIER is excited to have the opportunity to bring this Canadian talent’s forward thinking vision into the retail arena; OBJECT will debut to the Canadian media this spring.

DANIER is going crazy with the collaborations: Mark Fast, Greta Constantine and George Antonopoulos. I’m very excited about this development and I’m glad to see Canadian retail taking notice of our designers. I cannot wait to see it all.

Danier Spring Summer 2011

DANIER SS2011
Danier Spring Summer 2011 Campaign

I attended the Danier Spring Summer 2011 preview a few months back and got to play with some of the pieces that will be available in store soon.

Exploration is central this season, unveiled through safari silhouettes and tribal details. Graphic animal prints and exotic Moroccan-inspired embroidery are incorporated into accessories, while utilitarian items like a leather trench or slim-cut bomber are sure to be adopted as wardrobe staples for the season.
Accessories and garments in an upbeat palette of poppy, fuchsia, violet, teal and citrus make for daring dressing this season. Using colour as the inspiration and statement point of an outfit, DANIER’s collection invites a pop of interest into your wardrobe with a multitude of hothouse hues. Whether it’s a bright and bold accessory or an eye-popping bomber, this season colour takes center stage.
Finally, sporting gear is made glamorous with the new take on athletic chic. A lineup of slick sports-style separates make up this season’s all stars. From striped hoodies and tanks too cool for the gym, to micro shorts and perforated skirts to show off great gams, these easy, pared-down pieces are essentials to off-duty dressing

Danier SS11 Preview

Colour is very big for Danier this season and I’m happy to see other choices than your standard black and brown available.

Danier SS11 Preview

I really like the ombre treatment on this jacket.

This ivory leather trench coat is one of the standouts of the season. I predict this one will sell out pretty quickly.

Be on the lookout for the Ombré leather bustier with petit ruffles, Leather short shorts and Leather circle skirt.

Mark Fast x Danier Fall Winter 2011 - 2012

I’m all over this collaboration between Mark Fast and Danier. I can’t wait to see what they stir up.

Canadian designer Mark Fast has partnered with leading Canadian fashion brand and retailer DANIER to create his Autumn/Winter 11/12 collection. Set to be unveiled in February at London Fashion Week, the London-based talent will incorporate leather elements manufactured by the Canadian brand.

DANIER is thrilled to have the opportunity to manufacture leather for the upcoming fashion week presentation. This will mark the first time Mark Fast – a designer who has enjoyed international acclaim for his original knitwear and famed catwalk presentations – has collaborated with a Canadian retailer. DANIER looks forward to showcasing and selling a capsule collection inspired by the designer’s Autumn/Winter 11/12 collection.

Danier Design Challenge 2011

DANIER, Canada’s premier leather retailer, is teaming up with Ryerson School of Fashion to reach out to young fashion influencers in the second year of this exciting design initiative.

The DANIER Design Challenge will give 3rd year design students the opportunity to showcase their fashion chops by creating an original women’s leather garment design.

That’s where YOU come in. The Canadian public along with a panel of expert judges will choose the winners. Last year, John Hillifer was the winning designer – his jacket is in select Danier stores NOW!

YOU will get to vote on danier.com from October 5th to December 22th . Your votes along with those of an industry expert panel — including Robert Ott, Chair of Ryerson School of Fashion, Olga Koel, DANIER’s Chief Merchandising Officer, fashion icon and television host Jeanne Beker, fashion stylist George Antonopoulos and Tiyana Grulovic, a fashion style reporter and stylist — will decide who becomes the winner of the DANIER Design Challenge.

Three winners will be awarded a cash prize and the first place designer will get the chance to have his or her design featured in DANIER’s fall 2011 collection.

The Fall Winter 2010 – 2011 collection from Danier is out. Some of my favourite pieces are their collaborations with John Hillifer, winner of Danier Design Challenge 2010 and the Raphael Mazzucco Mixed Media Montage collection.  The selection of pieces I like are all very motorcycle inspired.

Danier Fall Winter 2010

I’m loving the leather dress and Celine inspired black leather tshirt. John’s jacket is very different from what I normally see in Danier and that’s a good thing to see them embracing different design.  Raphael Mazzucco Mixed Media Montage collection pieces have colourful linings that were created by Raphael.
