Toronto is the smallest of towns.

Yesterday, I posted about these earrings I got. Samara, Petitsbijoux, emailed me and asked if I received the package. I replied and said I did and that I loved them. She replied saying that maybe I’ll see you around wearing them. I really didn’t think that would happed, but it did and quickly. I was walking to Ossington on Queen from The Drake Thursday evening and who do I run into; that’s right Samara! It was surreal, but very cool to meet the designer. Toronto is such a small place.

Hunter Boots in Toronto

Well, well, everyone wants Hunter boots now. Even my friend MJ jumped on the bandwagon which totally surprised me. You should see the looks we get when he’s wearing his black ones and I’m wearing my blue ones. We look like a crazy couple that dresses alike, thought MJ is the better dressed one. Just to let the guys know, Hunter’s are a unisex boot. So if anyone tells you they are a girl’s boot, they are completely wrong. Make sure you let them know that the Duke of Wellington is rolling in his grave at the suggestion. So here is an updated list for where to buy Hunter boots aka Wellys in Toronto Get Outside – They carry a range of colours. I really want a yellow pair. Heel Boy – Carrys Hunters in a variety of colours. The website is annoying – content not music people. It looks half finished. That being said, it’s a great store for shoes. The Bay apparently is carrying them also. If you’ve seen Hunters around, please leave …

Mass Exodus 2008

Mass Exodus 2008 I attended my first Mass Exodus show. For those of you that don’t know, Mass Exodus is Ryerson’s fashion show for graduating students. I attended the press and industry show, so we saw the top 20 collections of the graduating class. It was interesting to watch Mass Exodus because it’s raw. These kids haven’t been broken down by the industry or have had there creativity stifled – well maybe the teachers helped there, but I can’t say for sure. They are excited about fashion and that is wonderful. The production value of the show was excellent. The theater department was involved and there was a large set, smoke machines, lights and video. It was well organized and executed. I heard about the excessive number of swimwear and lingerie collections last year but this year there was only one and it was pretty good. I thought the bottom could have used some more fabric though. Not many collections grabbed me to be honest. Some kids were drinking way too much of the 80s …

Shreyas and Mina Ajmera Gallery of Africa, the Americas and Asia-Pacific at the Rom

I visited the ROM one lunch break to preview the Shreyas and Mina Ajmera Gallery of Africa, the Americas and Asia-Pacific. There was a little speech by prominent officials. I learned that new curators were brought on board to help with the gallery. We then went up to the gallery itself. I liked the layout and how they displayed the 1400+ pieces. This gallery reflects the ROM’s vast and diverse collections that represent the artistic and cultural traditions of indigenous peoples from Africa, the American continents, the Asia-Pacific region and Oceania. This is the first permanent home for these collections in over 30 years, with many of the 1,400 artifacts on display for the first time. Ranging from large and dramatic ceremonial masks and colourful robes to archaeological objects such as ceramics and basketry, the collections were gathered from the late 19th century to the present and represent some of the Museum’s founding collections. The artifacts reveal aspects of everyday life, clothing, commerce, ceremony and art of indigenous cultures from around the world. Divided into …

More from [FAT] 2008

I attended [FAT] aka Toronto Alternative Arts and Fashion Festival this past week. You can read about it on blogTO. I am a little disappointed that I didn’t get to see the fashions on Friday. I had photographer friends the whole time and here are some photos from the event by Daryl Banks.

i got: electric blue mascara from Cargo Cosmetics

I don’t wear much makeup but I really love mascara. I picked up some electric blue mascara from Cargo Cosmetics today at Sephora. It’s easy to spend a ton of time in that store and I don’t even know how to use most of the stuff in the place. The blue shows up well this one. I’ve tried others where the lashes look black. EDIT: I’ve added a photo of me wearing the stuff. The blue pops eh!

What does Barbara think?

I was reading the Buyers Report from WWD on the Fashion Spot and noticed that Barbara Atkin, vice president, fashion direction from Holt Renfrew talks about the collections from a retail perspective. Milan “Although Milan started as a somber season, it ended on a high note by offering a variety of beautiful and luxurious clothing with an infusion of newness. We saw a combination of the strict and subdued juxtaposed against a kaleidoscope of color, print and detail, all adding up to a decadent, luxurious bohemian style. We saw influences from the Seventies with long, lean silhouettes and covered-up clothes playing against the short and swinging. The ‘separates’ dressing that had its roots in the Seventies is making a strong return. We will be looking for luxurious coats; cropped or shapely jackets with accented shoulders; soft, folkloric dresses, blouses and skirts; cardigans and sweater coats; skinny and cropped pants, and man-tailored suits. We will be slightly increasing our budget over last year, as we believe our customer will continue to come to us looking for …
