Rad Hourani Ready to Wear – Fall 2010

Rad Hourani may get called repetitive but I really enjoy what he does season to season. I just wish better video would come out of his shows. There is quite a lot of detail in the line but because everything is black it’s not often represented fully in photos. I do love the androgyny of the collection. I enjoy looking through the photos and not being limited to considering only the women’s looks. That isn’t something that I really think of when looking at men’s and women’s clothing but with Rad it’s a little different. images: Pablo Ravazzani, nymag.com

Jeremy Laing Fall Winter 201 Inspiration

Jeremy Laing Ready To Wear – Fall 2010

Jeremy Laing debuts fur and knits for his Fall 2010 collection.  I’m in love.  The huge waffle knit looks so cosy and warm.  I love the fur hoods and snoods.  I can see these being a hot item for fall, especially with the unusual treatment and colours. Beaver, raccoon, and muskrat pelts come from sustainably hunted animals in Canada. Jeremy was inspired by: “Elements of the Canadian northwest coast: from the curvilinear style of Native American graphics appearing on totems, boxes and midcentury art prints to the rich colors and textures of the redwood forest.” This collection was an exploration of texture and surface.  Most elements of this collection I loved but I did feel that it was a little all over the place.  I’m on the fence with what I call the sky print (it looks like a night sky full of stars).  I want to see it in person or on video because I think the camera isn’t doing it justice. Dean and Dan do the Olympics

We were so relieved to find out that Dean and Dan of DSQUARED2 only dressed the some of the headlining talent for the Opening Ceremonies.  Some of those costumes were just flat out bad. Here’s a breakdown with cute sketches of what Dean and Dan put together. Measha’s gown was my favourite of the bunch.  I didn’t expect something like this from DSQUARED2.  She also wore jewellery from the Measha Collection by Mindham Fine Jewellery.  I love the colours and that they aren’t your standard diamonds. Here’s the breakdown of that beautiful collection Bracelet – Eight stone 123ct citrine “Wilma” bracelet set in 18ct yellow gold – $12,690 Ring – 116.38ct citrine ring containing 1.33ct diamonds set in 18ct white gold – $11,030 Necklace- 41ct peridot and 232.62ct prasiolite neck collar set in 18ct yellow gold – $14,200 Ear Pendants – Matched pear shape 36.15ct golden beryl ear pendants containing 1.1ct diamonds set in 18ct yellow gold – $28,400 I really, really wish Dean and Dan dressed KD Lang, that would have been amazing. The MINI Beachcomber Concept - Toronto Autoshow 2010

The MINI Beachcomber Concept – Toronto Autoshow 2010

I haven’t been to the Autoshow in at least twenty years so I jumped at the chance to write about the new The MINI Beachcomber Concept car. The MINI Beachcomber was making a short stop in Toronto for its first Canadian appearance before being whisked to Europe for another autoshow. It may seem a little weird to my regular readers, but I’m a huge MINI fan. I love luxury and sports cars with Porsche being my favourite. Way back in 2006, I wrote a post for blogTO about Zipcar and my first experience driving a MINI. Luxury event managers, CANDICE&ALISON were hired to produce the MINI Beachcomber launch with the theme of beach tailgate party. They brought together a mix of fashion designers, models, makeup artists and product designers to contribute to the launch. The theme was heavily influenced by retro 50s beach party pop culture. Canadian designer Farley Chatto created MINI branded pin-up retro polka dot bikinis, a pair of board shorts and sheer tank. Jon, Vlada (black hair) and Caitlin of Elite models stepped …

Fashion House From Runway to Hallway Designer Videos

I wrote about the Fashion House From Runway to Hallway preview in the summer of 2009. I’ve discovered some videos of the designers talking about the project. I want – I got Studio Tours – Dean Davidson

This is the beginning of a new feature I’d like to introduce to I want – I got, the Studio Tour. I’ve had the pleasure of visiting the studio space a few local designers. I’m fan poking around creative types working spaces. I find all their tools fascinating. The mood and inspiration boards give me insight into their brains. I figured other people would be interested too, so why not blog about it. The Studio Tours isn’t really a formal interview; more a conversation. It’s a way to get a look into a creative mind in their workspace. First up, Dean Davidson. “You worked in agriculture before you became a jewellery designer”, I replied to Dean. My jaw hit the ground before the words got out. It wasn’t the beginning I expected to hear from Canadian jewellery designer Dean Davidson. For 8 years Dean would travel to different farms and evaluate them in order to explain to the farmer what was needed in order to create the yield they were looking for.  Dean was all …

lily + jae Spring 2010 Lookbook

lily + jae is a Vancouver based contemporary fashion line created by Jude Feller. She spent seven years working in the costume department for film and television before starting lily + jae. I like it when designers include behind the scenes videos like this one for the Spring 2010 lookbook. I see a lot of the “On the farm” Spring 2010 trend in the lookbook and while I’m not a fan I found some looks I enjoy from lily + jae Lily + jae can be found in Toronto at Aritzia – Bloor and Yorkdale, Charlie, Distill and Vocado. images: courtesy of lily + jae
