I want – I got Editorials – Philip Sparks Spring 2013

A lot of bloggers love to the do the photoshoot of themselves thing. If you’ve been here long enough, you know that’s not my thing. I rarely post about my daily outfits because I honestly don’t find it or them interesting. For those of you that are curious about what I’m wearing, your best bets for glimpses are to follow me on twitter or instagram. You can search geekigirl to find me. So, I don’t like outfit posts and that kinda shit but I enjoy doing the occasional editorial. Some of these editorials I’ve organized and others I’ve just played model. I was blogging for the award-winning MasterCard Stylicity project this season and I organized three editorial shoots for the stores Philip Sparks, Nomad and Spectacle. The shots turned out really well so I’ve decided to showcase some of them here too. First up is Philip Sparks. I brought my sometime collaborator with me Dave Yan. We did the Moon campaign together and he has an amazing eye for shots. The amazing Andrew Coimbra styled …

geekiviews: MARNI Fragrance

Way back in November I sat down with Trudi Loren who is the Vice President, Corporate Fragrance Development at Estèe Lauder Companies. She was in Toronto to introduce Marni’s first fragrance to members of the press. I’m a big fan of Marni and head designer Consuelo Castiglioni. I see her clothing in person at Holt Renfrew and I find myself coveting everything. I wanted to know if she could translate that feeling to a fragrance. Marni isn’t stereotypical feminine either, how would that translate into scent. Trudi starts with the origins of the fragrance. Consuelo had specific ideas for the fragrance when she met with Estèe Lauder perfumers. They tweaked her custom fragrance after numerous design cycles using their knowledge to take the fragrance to market and still be true to Consuelo vision of Marni. She was very involved in every step of the design process, treating it like editing a collection. The starting point was typically material: it was woods and spices and the incense that Consuelo wanted, somehow reminiscent the woody landscapes of …

i want: Obsedia Handbag by Givenchy

I have a bit of a Givenchy bag obsession. I’ll admit that. I’ve talked about the Pandora and Antigona perviously and I love the Obsedia Bag too. Both the Givenchy Taupe Leather Gold Trimmed Obsedia Shoulder Bag and the Givenchy Red Leather Gold Trimmed Obsedia Shoulder bag are both available at ssense.com for (le sigh) $1775. images: lyst.com

i want: Peplum Moto Jacket by Sacai

I got to touch the Sacai Peplum Moto Jacket in person at Holt Renfrew the other day. It’s so beautiful. I love Chitose Abe’s take on the moto jacket with the addition of the peplum back and the choice blue striped fabric. It’s available online at Barney’s and also available in Khaki Green. images: lyst.com

Ohne Titel Fall Winter 2013 – 2014

Do something geometric and I’m probably going to like it. If the designers are Ohne Titel doing something geometric means I’m going to love it. The Fall Winter 2013 – 2014 Ohne Titel collection is called “Optimistic minimalism”. Designers Flora Gill and Alexa Adams took inspiration from their friend, artist Tauba Auerbach. Tauba’s cavases of woven twill tape provided the common thread that permeated the collection. I loved everything about this collection from the repeating pattern, muted colour palette and knitwear. The shoes are perfectly suited to this slightly futurist collection. The quilting fits in perfectly with the grid pattern. Thankfully there is a full fashion available for the Ohne Titel Fall Winter 2013 – 2014 collection images: style.com

I want – I got’s Hermes Scarf Reference Guide

A few years ago I was researching the Hermès Scarves I bought at the sample sale. I wanted to know the artist and year produced. It was during that search that I found my a few of my go to Hermès Scarf reference sites. Over time I’ve added some more sites to that list and I’ve decided to share. HSCI Hermès Scarf Photo Catalogue – Want to know more about your Hermes scarf, this is your first stop. The Hermès Scarf Photo Catalogue has an extensive archive of scarves dating all the way back to 1937. Scarves are cross referenced by name, artist, year of issue, material, etc. A community of Hermès fans contribute photos to the catalogue and it’s updated regularly. Luxury-scarves.com – This is an online shop that sells new, used and vintage Hermès scarves. It also has a database that has a number of scarves from the Hermès archives. Louis Vuitton Fall Winter 2013 -2014 Fashion Show

The Louis Vuitton Fall Winter 2013 – 2014 runway show was incredible. Marc Jacobs and team create a perfectly cohesive intimates as daywear collection and presented the collection in the perfect setting, a hotel. A number of doors lined the edges of the circular runway and a group of models would walk out of the doors and proceed around the runway. The finale group included Kate Moss and my personal favourite Mariacarla Boscono. The video of the collection must be seen. I love the giant corporate giants and their huge show budgets when they put on shows like this. Marc Jacobs, still love this man. This collection is takes the whole pajama dressing style to the next level. I’m not normally a slip dress lover but the velvet, lace and embroidery is just to beautiful to resist. images: vogue.com Louis Vuitton | Fall Winter 2013/2014 Full Fashion Show | Exclusive – YouTube.

Marc Jacobs Fall – Winter 2013 – 2014 Fashion Show

Marc Jacobs and I are getting along very well this year. I loved his striped extravaganza that was the Spring Summer 2013 collection. The Fall Winter 2013 – 2014 Marc Jacobs fashion show was epic. In the middle of a circular runway was a giant glowing orb hanging. It was like a Red Giant star and models walking around where the planets. Marc is really into the Pajama dressing this season at Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton. He’s the type of designer that can convert my indifferent feelings into interest. I have this thing for Hot Pants right now after buying a pair from Clover Canyon. Marc Jacobs showed some really great ones in this show, but the most of them were changed to skirts for the ordering public. The Moda Operandi Trunk Show for Marc Jacobs is over but you can still pre-order some select looks from the Fall Winter 2013 – 2014 collection on marcjacobs.com. They ship to Canada now too.

Kania Spring Summer 2013

Kania Spring Summer 2013 Lookbook

I enjoyed opening the Kania Spring Summer 2013 lookbook, the images are beautiful. Kania is the brainchild of Ottawa based Stacey Bafi-Yeboa. She is a former Broadway dancer and that experience heavily influences her designs. Kania is designed and manufactured in Canada. The Spring Summer 2013 Kania collection is called Tropical Luxuriance. Stacey brought in Tanzanian model, Herieth Paul who moved to Ottawa when she was 14. Mary Katrantzou Fall Winter 2013 – 2014

I usually only post about my favourite collections of the fashion weeks. The Mary Katrantzou Fall Winter 2013 – 2014 collection a favourite not because I loved most of the looks. It’s a favourite because Mary did something I didn’t expect this season, she changed. I’ve anticipated this move since the Katrantzou print influence took over the fashion world. The typical Katrantzou print was out and photos by Edward Steichen, Clarence White, and Alfred Stieglitz were in. She explored new, angular shapes with some Japanese influences and toned down the colour. There was a lot of black in the collection. I appreciate the risks she took with this collection. The backstage photos posted on the Mary Katrantzou Facebook page should change anyone’s opinion of the collection, it’s just beautiful. “I wanted to step back from color and print and contemplate shapes and silhouettes. It was important for me to take that time,” she said. It was the first season we draped on the stand in a very complex way.” (source) Mary has commercial avenues with …

i want: Brooks Brothers x Liberty London Dresses

I finally visited a Brooks Brothers store in Toronto. I don’t know why it took me so long to visit the Brooks Brothers Flatiron Shop. It’s a beautiful store situated in an old bank building and includes the vault! While I was browsing I noticed the dresses made from Liberty London fabrics. I can’t remember the Canadian price but they are listed as $248USD on the website which also ships to Canada. Brooks Brothers Flatiron Shop 262 Bloor St W Toronto images: www.brooksbrothers.com

Hermes Spring Summer 2013 – Long Live Sport

Hermès does an incredible job with their product videos. They are extremely well done and hit that sweet spot of cute and whimsical that wins me over every time. The Sporting Life is the theme of the 2013 for Hermès and this set of four videos does a terrific job of conveying the theme. Each video takes items from the spring summer 2013 and incorporates them into sporty vignettes. Ping Pong features the Toolbox bag and the Rallye 24 Porcelain Collection. Rallye 24 Porcelain Collection: The new Hermès porcelain collection designed by Benoît-Pierre Emery and Damian O’Sullivan will be available in Canadian boutiques in May 2013. Rallye 24 has the emblematic anchor chain caught up in and propelled along by a new story on porcelain. It is playfully reworked as a car race track with its straight lines and oval corners, all short-circuiting with their foot to the floor.(source: Hermès PR) Toolbox bag: A slight family resemblance… A cousin of the Kelly, with a vanity-case touch, this bag unites the Hermès spirit and the practicality …

Run, Don’t Walk to Roger Vivier: Process to Perfection at the Bata Shoe Museum

The Roger Vivier exhibit at The Bata Shoe Museum is coming to a close and if you’ve been putting off going you need to stop now. April 7, 2013 is the last day you can check out the work of this master shoemaker. I finally got off my ass and took in the exhibit this week. Roger Vivier’s work is of exceptional beauty and technical design. He invented so many of the classic shoe styles some of which are as popular as ever more than 50 years later. Roger pushed shoe design to new levels with his creative and technical sides. Vivier perfected the modern stiletto in 1954. He never used the term stiletto but aiguille (needle heel). The Choc heel which looks like a concave stiletto came along in 1959. My favourite pair of the exhibit are a Choc heel and pictured above. Roger also debuted the Tibet heel in 1959. It’s shaped like a small inverted pyramid. The Polichinelle heel followed, it has a low hourglass-shaped heel. In 1962 he introduced another heel …

i want: Embroidered Asymmetric Moto Jackets by Sacai

Sacai, Sacai. Is there many brands cooler than you? I don’t think so. Chitose Abe has created my dream moto jacket. The front of the jacket is true to motorcycle style but the back is loose and drapey. It’s the kind of coat that makes an entrance with this build in cape, superhero styles. It’s cut from the same cloth as my Moncler S Shihoko trench coat which was also designed by Chitose Abe. I hope Moncler S is coming back, I haven’t seen anything on the Moncler website for the Spring Summer 2013 collections. Sacai Embroidered Asymmetric Moto Jacket in White and Yellow is available for pre-order at Barney’s for $2130. Le sigh. images: lyst.com

Sarah Stevenson Design Spring Summer 2013 Lookbook

Sarah Stevenson Design Spring Summer 2013 collection reminds me of the sea and Ming Dynasty porcelain. Sarah is a textile designer so she creates the prints herself and has them transferred to silk. Pattern Observer has a great interview with Sarah. All of her pieces are made in Canada. For those people who tend to skew a bit more conservative in their clothing can add a pop of colour and print with one of Sarah’s beautiful scarves. You can find Sarah Stevenson Design online at Ukamaku and sarahstevensondesign.com. images: courtesy of Sarah Stevenson Design

AnU RaiNa Spring Summer 2013 – Tathya’s Garden

I’m a secret pomegranate junkie. It’s a problem that developed when I worked close to Chinatown. During Ppmegranate season, I developed the habit of buying up copious amounts of the fruit, taking advantage of the 3 for $5 pricing that dominated the many of the fruit sellers in the area. I knew which shops that consistently brought in quality pomegranates, knowledge after weeks of experimentation and research. I made the most of the short season and ate my way through it at every opportunity. I don’t work close to Chinatown anymore but my pomegranate addiction hasn’t stopped. My local grocer brings in good pomegranates during the season. They know my habits really well. So, it’s not a surprise that I love Anu Raina’s pomegranate dominated Spring Summer 2013 collection. My SS13 collection of prints is inspired by my memories of witnessing the majestic Echinaceas, the dew drop laden Daisys on the lazy Sunday mornings, the beautiful Pomegrante trees that humbly bore the weight of the biggest and reddest ever Pomegrantes, the riot of colour and …
