I attended [FAT], Toronto Alternative Arts and Fashion Week, at the Distillery District last week. Here are a sampling of the people to be seen at |FAT|
I attended [FAT], Toronto Alternative Arts and Fashion Week, at the Distillery District last week. It was the final day of a very a long week.
There are a lot of designers to get through. So most of my reviews will be brief using word association. I’ll expand on a collection when necessary. Each day has get it’s own post, read the previous reports: FAT Day 1, FAT Day 2, FAT Day 3.
Day 4 |BEYOND|
|FAT| takes a glance at where we are headed and how we can reinvent ourselves. Artists seek to experiment, play, and dream. They push barriers and challenge conventions. Imagination and the extremes of invention shape possibilities for the future.
LOVAS Wesley Badanjak – lovely colour scheme, houndstooth, teal, office dressing, great pants. The collection was very well constructed; I have to admit it was quite lovely to see. Wesley is a David Dixon protege and the collection looked kinda like, umm, David Dixon. I dubbed it David Light. That being said, I could see myself in a number of LOVAS pieces for the office. I completely died over the jewellery by Rita Tesolin. The styling was also fantastic with the fingerless gloves of multiple lengths.
Salvador by Martha Sharpe – futurism, colour blocking, exposed zippers, body hugging, spats, wetsuits, embroidery and applique. I saw part of this collection at Mass Exodus, and I still like it. I l like the space uniform feel of the collection and the styling of the shoes were do die for. The shoes were to die for.
Jennifer Allison – increased in volume, dramatic reveal, stilts, mounds and mounds of ruffles, mix of textures, woven. This was another collection that I saw part of at Mass Exodus. It didn’t grab me as much because they didn’t have the model on the stilts. It was really a brilliant moment and quite beautiful. I loved the cream dress reveal, gorgeous.
Ryerson School of Fashion – A mishmash of work from a number of students from Ryerson. I particularly like the outfit pictures. It was another Mass Exodus collection that I saw. I can’t remember the designers name though.
Erinchan.com – Androgyny, earth tones, beautiful prints, gold, faux leather, minimal. This boy pictured worked the runway!!!
Futurstate – Cyber Goth, German, military, corset details, long dresses and skirts, harnesses.
Starkers! Corsetry – Skinny Puppy, Man corsets, gothic, prints. The show had me with their liberal use of Skinny Puppy and my fascination with corsets. I really like the straight jacket corset (pictured above). I loved the use of prints instead of the traditional fare. I’m obsessing over getting a corset now.
Annie Thompson – Royal purple and yellow, sultan, Persia, obi belts, harem pants.
Matthew Donnelly – Lena Love, horses, clomping shoes, bright colours, jumpsuits, ropework, strong shoulder. I particularly loved the two finale looks that incorporated the rope detail. The picture above is just a great example of the finale’s dramatic flair.
I attended [FAT], Toronto Alternative Arts and Fashion Week, at the Distillery District last week. It was four days of music, art and fashion. It was a long week, so very long. I thought of bailing on many days of FAT, but I never want to miss any of the fashion shows. It’s always an internal battle.
There are a lot of designers to get through. So most of my reviews will be brief using word association. I’ll expand on a collection when necessary. Each day will get it’s own post.
For Day 3 you’ll notice a significant decrease in the quality of the photography. Well that’s because yours truly was taking the photos this day. My photographer, Paul Baik, was taking the day off. My picture are horrible, even more horrible than normal because I was using a Nikon S230 loaner which I’m not enjoying all that much. Don’t worry, Paul is back for Day 4.
Day 3 |GUTTER|
Unsettling. Shifting. Extreme. How do we survive in these volatile times? |FAT| explores art & fashion through the current social, political and economic aspects of a place on the edge.
Tassoni Brasil – Had a team full of Elmer Olsen models. The women had legs for days, days I tell you. Very Brasil, tiny bathing suits and short shorts. Clothing for the heat of summer
Jet Exhibition – Was the Maison Martin Margiela of the night.
Magpie – Cabaret, Liza Minnelli, french, tophats, canes, sexy, striptease, sheer, exposed zippers. I really missed my Photographer for this collection 🙁
youth. in Asia – jagged seams, black patent, film, Fluevog boots that Carolyn wants, abstract
Kirsty Mckenzie – Lena Love, flowered shoes, patterned leggings,
Salvation: By Asphyxia/Magdelina/Empire – guns, knives, gothic, platform shoes, creepy kid with the grenade.
IMAGOzine – Jessica Biffi feathered dress, horror theme, BDSM. The show was way too long and the woman who stuck hooks through her neck really disturbed a bunch of folks. I wasn’t one of them, I was able to sit through Mr. Lifto back in the day.

Amanda Rose – Felt like two collections as the second half of the show turned into jersey lingerie which I didn’t enjoy. I did enjoy the knits and linen pieces.
Cherry Blossom – 80s, Rad Hourani, Rodarte, I really enjoyed the shredded leggings
Romandin by Cristina Sabaiduc – Woven fabrics, rope and dresses with magnets and iron filings details, amazing!
Deadly Nightshades – Cycling theme that fits with their girl gang. Best colour scheme, best use of man meat for the runway.
Paper People Clothing – Drinking and Dreadlocks follow by death and rebirth. I loved the finale to this show. Jennifer comes to revive her dead doppelganger at the end of the runway.
Meet My Art by Baby Steinberg – True Earth Day collection, recycled materials (plastic, luggage tags, cellphone covers), woven materials
Too Hot Too Wet Too Dangerous by Karey Shinn – Infusing dance and fashion, this show was the showstopper of the week. I was sold when the polar bears came out and started dancing.
Top Shows of Day 2 – Too Hot Too Wet Too Dangerous by Karey Shinn, Paper People Clothing
Day 2 Gallery will complete looks from all fashion shows attended.

Day 1 |HOME|
Designers and artists explore the place which is most familiar and known to us. The night looks at the meaning of home through culture and history, romance and beauty, power and subtlety, sexuality and domesticity.
Nahanee by Jillian Grant – tribal influence (Africa, North American natives), Carnival in Rio, cross tops, gstrings and fringe covered bottoms
Love Cliche – mixture of textures, Chanel inspired skirt, too much fringe
Matryoshka by Pink Lady – felt the material of choice, brilliant colours, babushka, Katy Perry
Yang Yang – Amazing finale (pictured above), Chinese, abstract, nautical, stuffed clothing companions. All the models in white and red runners which happened to be the footwear of choice of the designer
Christopher Paunil – Bridal collection. Some of the fabric colours didn’t match up (unless that was intentional). I loved the tiered finale dress (pictured above) until I saw the applique that was applied. There was a singer who performed during the fashion show.
Lubica – bold colour, L.A. jersey dress styles, colour blocking, Caribbean Island girl style. Really liked this collection of jersey dresses, great colour combination with flower details.
Jessica May Clayton – Saw the collection at Mass Exodus. I really liked the sequined pieces until I saw that they didn’t cover the garment. I couldn’t deal when the model’s backs were to me. Beautiful front you should make the back count too.
