geekiviews: Cromwell and Cruthers Shaving Oil 2010 Redux

This post is part old and part new. I had my friend The Grumpy Owl review Cromwell and Cruthers Shaving Oil back in 2009. It’s an awesome review which is reproduced in it’s entirety below. Cromwell and Cruthers have re-branded the product and I like the new slick look. I also like that Philip Sparks and Mackenzie James are involved in the advertising campaign. I have behind the scenes footage. geekiviews: Cromwell and Cruthers Shaving Oil Originally Published: 2009/01/02 This edition of geekiviews features a guest blogger, The Grumpy Owl. He’s a guy and the Cromwell and Cruthers Shaving Oil is for men. So it made sense that he review it instead of me. I hate oiling up my body. It’s the sort of the thing that one should have a person for. Preferably young, buxom and foreign. So, when Geekigirl gave me a plastic vial of Cromwell and Cruthers Shaving Oil, I viewed the product with some trepidation. Oil is bad enough but shaving is worse. The last time I combined the two, I …

geekiviews: Sitamaa Spa

I had an amazing treatment at the Sitamaa Spa in Yorkville. It funny how it took a New York based twitter friend, @michellejoni to let me know about it. Michelle works at SpaWeekDaily.com and contacted me with a Spa review opportunity. I love the spa so I said yes. I was amazed she was working with people in Toronto. The owner is 15 year industry veteran, Vaidehie Mistry.  She is a regular guest on the Steven and Chris show.  She’s also active on the speaking circuit holding lectures and seminars on skin care and beauty treatments. The Sitamaa Spa aims to be a knowledge centre for its clients. The environment is stark white which is deliberate. The client is to focus inward while at the Spa therefore the environment has minimal distractions. Vaidehie believes it’s time to refocus on the self. The Spa is there to make it easy for that serenity and concentration to happen. I had the Kyoshi Detox Wrap ($95). You are given disposable underwear to wear and the treatment takes place …

Svedka Vodka Launch

So Svedka launched in Canada. There was a party held at Parts & Labour. It was there I learned of Svedka’s mascot. It is one of the most bizarre product mascots I’ve seen, a sexy fembot. SVEDKA‟s futuristic branding is the platform on which SVEDKA_Grl, the world‟s first fun & flirtatious spokesbot, was born. She was designed in 2005 by Stan Winston, the mastermind and visual effects supervisor behind The Terminator and Jurassic Park. As fembots go, the Svedka _Grl looks good. I’m just having a hard time trying to reconcile how this sells vodka. The New York Times wrote a story that talks about the marketing plan. Early this year, SVEDKA debuted its first television commercial in the US. The “Soul Train meets the year 2033” future/retro themed commercial was directed by Francis Lawrence (whose credits include Lady Gaga‟s “Bad Romance” video, Britney Spears‟ “Circus,” Justin Timberlake‟s “Rock Your Body” and Gwen Stefani‟s “What You Waiting For”) and features a cover of the Jackson 5 classic song “Dancing Machine.” The bizarre commercial is burned …

Perfect a film by Ruth Hogben featuring Celine Fall Winter 2010 – 2011

Perfect is a film by Ruth Hogben for Showstudio. It features clothing from the Celine Fall Winter 2010 – 2011 collection. It’s basically Celine porn, you need to watch it on the Showstudio website. Reduce, refine, define. Phoebe Philo’s A/W 2010 Celine collection is a Minimalist mantra for modern dressing. Next season, perfect isn’t a noun, it’s a verb.(source) image: showstudio.com

Versace Menswear Spring Summer 2011

I received an email with some photos of the Versace Menswear Fall Winter 2010 – 2011 show from a person at enternewmedia.com. I guess Versace has contracted them for their social media campaign. I skimmed through the photos but didn’t really pay much attention. It’s almost a month later and I was looking through some images and rediscovered the Versace collection. I’m really liking the ’80 rockabilly style Donatella Versace was channeling this season. I found a video of the collection, it’s not the best quality but it has the original soundtrack (which is kick ass). There are a couple men’s styles that I gravitate to. Rockabilly is one. It all starts with the pompadour, what a great hairstyle. Hello, creepers, so kick ass. I also love the slim, lean silhouette. I love a straight up suit on a man. The only requirement is that is fits well. It could be a Zoot Suit or a boxy Armani gangster suit. It’s one of the reasons why I love working in the financial district. Even though …

David Dixon and Philip Sparks for Town Shoes Fall Winter 2010 Preview

Town Shoes recently sent this teaser image of some of the new fall winter 2010 – 2011 collections from Philip Sparks and David Dixon. I’m so glad to see this designer shoe collaboration continuing to be a success. Every year the shoes get better and better. I’m dying over the Philip Sparks boots. If only they came in a men’s 6, I would be in heaven. images: courtesy of Town Shoes

Stuart Weitzman coming to The Eaton Centre in August

Stuart Weitzman is scheduled to open the last week of August week of August 16, 2010 in The Eaton Centre. Stuart Weitzman opens its first stand-alone store at the Toronto Eaton Centre (TEC) in August. The downtown Toronto location marks the third opening for Stuart Weitzman brand boutiques in Canada, having recently launched at Rockland Center and Carrefour Laval in Québec. Within the next several years, the plans are to roll out a limited number of brand boutiques in select locations across the country. The 1,506 square foot store has a captivating atmosphere with an innovative interior design of ribbon detailing. Designed by famed Italian architect Fabio Novembre, who collaborates with Stuart Weitzman on its store designs, this unique modern retail concept has become a recognized worldwide icon of the brand. With a palette of vanilla/gray tones, the stores transcend into a modern contemporary space showcasing Stuart Weitzman’s shoes and handbags. Balmain x Oliver Peoples

Balmain x Oliver Peoples I have to admit the Balmain x Oliver Peoples collaboration is pretty nice. For the 2010 season, Paris couture house Balmain collaborated with Oliver Peoples to create its first eyewear design. This Limited Edition sunglass, named simply Balmain I, is a bold, unisex style that reflects the edgy aesthetics developed by designer Christophe Decarnin on the runway. Featuring an exaggerated teardrop lens shape in a form-fitting wrap, the Balmain I is a mixed-media style, crafted with a metal top bar and temples, and an acetate eyewire. Unified with four screws along the backside, the frame also features a flexible hinge for added comfort. Two color options are available: solid black and a black/silver combination. EDIT: I’ve discovered a Canadian retailer. Unfortunately it’s only in Toronto, Spectacle. images: oliverpeoples.com

Object Fetish by SHOWstudio: Alexander McQueen Fall Winter 2010 – 2011 Shoes

I’m loving the Object Fetish videos by SHOWstudio. Examining key pieces from next seasons international collections, Object Fetish trains obsessive attention onto next seasons not-so-obscure objects of desire – namely the choicest accessories from fashions favourite names, metaphorically unpicked through film and text. The last Object Fetish video I showed you was for the Fall Winter 2010 – 2011 Chanel Ice Cube Handbags. This video takes on Alexander McQueen’s final Fall Winter 2010 – 2011 collection. The Fetish is shoes.  The object is pictured above.  The video isn’t on youtube yet so you will have to visit the Object Fetish – SHOWstudio site to watch.  It’s well worth it, the shoes is one of the more ornate things I’ve ever seen.  I really wish SHOWstudio would have embeddable movies. I’ve also tracked down some images of what’s to come in shoes this fall for McQueen. images: showstudio.com, fashionising.com

i want: Douglas Coupland x Roots

I like a few items of the Douglas Coupland x Roots collaboration. The ROOTS X DOUGLAS COUPLAND collection includes apparel for women/men/children, accessories, leather goods, design items, furniture, limited editions, original art and a series of pop-up stores. This is the first time Douglas Coupland has designed fashion wearables. He is best known as the internationally best-selling author of “Generation X”, “JPod” and “Generation A”. “For more than 10 years I’ve been intimately exploring what it means to be Canadian,” says Coupland. “This partnership with Roots is an amazing opportunity to keep that dialogue going with an even wider, more diverse audience.” The theme created for the ROOTS X DOUGLAS COUPLAND collection is “Canada Goes Electric” and brings together Douglas Coupland’s recognizable perspective with the Roots reputation for quality goods and craftsmanship. “For the first time in our history, we stepped back and left the design to an outside designer,” explains Don Green, Co-founder of Roots. “Visually the collection is strong but beyond that, Douglas Coupland has once again shown his trademark humour and brilliance …
