Buy Local Week 2008

During BUY LOCAL WEEK December 1-7, think LOCAL FIRST! Ten Reasons to Buy Local 1. Money spent at locally-owned businesses goes around longer in the local economy as local business people pay for all kinds of local services, spend their profits and pay taxes locally. Purchasing locally helps grow other businesses and the Toronto tax base. 2. Local businesses produce more income, jobs, and tax receipts for local communities than big box stores do. 3. Non-profit organizations receive an average 350% greater support from local business owners than they do from non-locally owned businesses. 4. Supporting local businesses preserves the economic diversity of our communities and the unique character of our neighborhoods. 5. Local businesses have a reduced environmental impact because they can make more local purchases requiring less transportation. 6. Local businesses yield two to four times the economic benefit to you, the local resident, compared to non-local businesses. 7. Local businesses are owned by people who live in this community, and are more invested in the community’s future. 8. Local businesses often hire …

geekiviews: Vera Wang Look

I went to the launch of Vera Wang’s new perfume, Look. It was sponsored by Fashion Magazine and held at Panorama. It was a fun event and I spent time with friends and enjoyed the view. That’s me in the picture at the bar. Yup, the mustard tights. Love them! The skirt was a present from the owner of Print Vintage. It was originally a halter top dress that was unwearable. She couldn’t sell it and gave it to me one day when I was buying a dress. I got my handy sewing friend Danielle (finalfashion.ca) to turn it into a skirt. It’s pretty kick ass. There was a large ice sculpture display for the launch to show off the glass prism characteristics of the bottle. The ad campaign doesn’t bother me and that’s a very rare thing for perfume. Coty developed the fragrance. I’m by no means a perfume expert so I’ll let them describe it for you: Look was created in cooperation with Firmenich. It introduces notes of mandarin, watery greens, litchi and …

geekiviews: More thoughts on Care by Stella McCartney

In the post geekiviews: Care by Stella McCartney, I talked about the new Stella McCartney skincare product line I’m testing out. I’ve been using the product for a month now and I’m liking it a lot. I am a little surprised that the line doesn’t have eye cream, facial scrub or mask offerings. I received a bunch of different products. Two cleansers, Three elixirs and three moisturizing creams. I love the foam cleanser. It smells great and isn’t irritating to the skin at all. It also does a very good job of cleaning and removing water based makeup. I have kept the Dermalogica practice of washing my face twice, which first removes any pollution and then gets to cleaning the skin proper. I like the results of this cleanser better than my regular Dermalogica routine. I also received a cream cleanser which I’ve had no experience with before. I wasn’t even sure how to use cream cleanser until a few months ago. I’ve used the product a couple of times. It’s great for those late …

I think I got those pesky hotlinkers

I think I’m winning the battle. Some of you regular readers have probably seen my occasional outbursts about hotlinking. It really burns me as I pay for this site to be up and running and they are basically thieves. The latest ones were going after my Heidi Klum pics. It was the last straw and I decided to do something about it. So now they served up an image that could have been a lot worse. I’m being very freaking polite about it, when I just want to serve up a Goatse image for them. Assholes. You can see it in action on this poor saps site. Loser, host your own image! If any of you feed readers out there don’t see images, please let me know by commenting in this post.

Canstruction Toronto 2008

So every year in at my work, they setup entries for Canstruction. Canstruction is the most unique food charity in the world! A foundation of the Society for Design Administration (SDA), Canstruction is a design/build competition currently held in cities throughout North America. Teams of architects, engineers, and students mentored by these professionals compete to design and build giant structures made entirely from full cans of food. The results are displayed to the public as magnificent sculpture exhibits in each city where a competition is held. At the close of the exhibitions, all of the canned food used in the structures is donated to local food banks for distribution to emergency feeding programs that include pantries, soup kitchens, the elderly and day care centres. Since its inception, ten million pounds of food has been donated to aid in the fight against hunger. Initiated by the Denver, Seattle and New York Chapters of the SDA in 1992/93, Canstruction now has over one hundred individual competitions scheduled to take place during the 2007-2008 cycle. Design and Construction …
