geekiviews: Zune Edition – Microsoft Zune, initial thoughts

So I’m a guinea pig again this time it’s for Microsoft instead of Motorola. I’ve been asked to test drive the Microsoft Zune – 8G. I’m not particularly attached to my iPod so I said why not. I have Matchstick to thank for this. I’m one of 300 people in Canada in the program. So you’ll be seeing some Zune posts on the site as I give you my thoughts about the product and if it can be an iPod killer. Initial thoughts: 1. Interesting packaging. They are really trying to emulate the Apple way of packaging. The player is packaged great, not a lot of waste. I can’t say the same for the headphones and AC adapter that came with it. 2. Not sure about the packaging colour scheme, brown, orange. It’s unobtrusive I guess. 3. It’s a lot smaller than I thought. 4. Don’t like the scroll wheel 5. The interface is very flashy, with animation and all that. I’m definitely not used it to, so I’ll reserve judgment for now 6. It …

geekiviews: Sex in the City movie

Yes, even though I really don’t care, I saw Sex in the City. I knew that MJ would want me to see it with him. We went on Saturday, the theater was empty and the butter was real. The movie was way too long, painfully long. The storyline was predictably awful, but there were a few really good laughs. That theme song, hideous. That pretty much sums up the average Sex in the City fan to me, people who think Fergie is cool. The moving going crowd was fantastic, there wasn’t a short skirt or a stiletto in the place. The fashion was the only reason I cared and it was pretty intense. MJ and I played “what’s she wearing” the whole time. The product placement was totally ridiculous and I wonder how much money changed hands. Most of the outfits were just awful. The fashion show scene was completely laughable. I always hate fashion show scenes in movies (except Zoolander). People really identify with this movie. Is it true women go to New York …

geekiviews: Secret Slimmers

Ashworth Associates sent me a Secret package. I’ve been trying them out for this post. The package included items for the Secret Slimmers shapeware line: thigh & tummy shaper panty, high waist shaper panty and the tummy shaper pantyhose. They also included a pair of red leggings (pictured) and patterned black tights. Almost all of the items were in black, the high waisted shaper was nude. Ashworth Associates gets a check in my good books. There is nothing more disappointing than receiving nude hose. It may surprise some but I’m a fan of shapewear. For some items of clothing, it can really clean up a silhouette (hello, unforgiving jersey). I have a pair of skinny black dress pants that I won’t wear without it. It’s not about losing inches, it’s about smoothing. I’ve bought Nancy Ganz shaperwear in the past and it’s not cheap. Secret’s offerings are at least reasonable at $9 – $25. I’ve never purchased pantyhose from Secret before so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I now swear by their tummy shaper …

geekiviews: Sephora: The Ultimate Guide to Makeup, Skin, and Hair from the Beauty Authority

Melissa from Harper Collins send me the proof to the new book Amazon.ca: Sephora: The Ultimate Guide to Makeup, Skin, and Hair from the Beauty Authority. It was very exciting because the book wasn’t in print at the time, so I felt extra special to be getting a pre-launch look. The actual hardcover version is like a coffee table book. Sephora is one of those stores that can suck you in. I’m not a big user of makeup but I find myself getting excited looking at all the colours and packaging. I don’t even look at the skincare section; I’m a Demalogica girl. This book reads like a catalogue. I’m not sure what I was expecting, maybe something more subtle. The book is similar to what net-a-porter is doing; incorporating content that helps to sell the product. I liked the Faking it chatper where it talked about faking long legs and high cheekbones. The try this at home section was interesting too with instructions on how to wear red lipstick, shape your eyebrows, wearing false …

geekiviews: Revealing my beauty secrets tag challenge

Bargainista decided to tag me in the Revealing my beauty secrets tag challenge. This should be interesting and you’ll get an idea of my minimal approach to makeup. My Foundation: Don’t wear foundation. I probably should, but I’m lazy. My Mascara: I love Mascara. Right now my favourite is Cargo in Electric Blue. Day Cream: Dermalogica Active Moist moisturizer and Total Eye Care eye cream. My Beauty Product Brand: I don’t really have a favourite and Dermalogica doesn’t do makeup. My Essential Beauty Product: Dermalogica Active Moist moisturizer and Total Eye Care eye cream My Favorite Makeup Product: Lip gloss. Loving the Make Up For Ever super lip gloss in clear. I like the wet look. My Perfume: Flowerbomb and before that the lavender perfume you get when you stay at the Hotel St. Paul in old Montreal. God, I need to get back there. Three Products to bring on a Deserted Island (besides solar): Dermalogica, Dermalogica and more Dermalogica. I would need my Active Moist, special cleansing gel and Total Eye Care Woman I …

No wonder Chatelaine and I don’t have anything in common.

I can’t even get into the fashion section in this mag. It seems I’m not suppose to which is fair enough. Like every editor-in-chief, Sanati is fond of referencing “the typical reader” or, in her case, “the typical contemporary Canadian woman.” Usually, this archetype is a fiction, a statistical composite distilled, as Sanati remarked, from “a deep amount of psychobiography, demography and market research.” Chatelaine, however, draws heavily on a real woman. This is Robin (her last name is a secret), a white, blonde, pretty working mother, in her late-30s, who lives with her husband and two children, on a combined family income of about $80,000, in a suburb north-east of Toronto. Virtually everything about Robin is available in Chatelaine’s staff data base (and has been since at least early 2007). Rarely, Sanati remarked, does a day go by at Chatelaine headquarters without someone saying something like “Robin likes Patrick Dempsey” or “Robin would be interested in that” – and “that” could be a survey on the status of national day care, determining one’s correct …

geekiviews: LypSyl pure beewax lip protection

I love my friends at Brill Communications. They send me samples of LypSyl lip protection to try out. I received three products but I’ve only used two so far. Overall I like the product. It’s not heavy and it keeps the lips nice and moist. I’ve heard some buzz about beeswax being good alternative to some of the things that are in lip balm. I’m a fan of the Lyp Moisturizer Honey Berry. It’s has a faint smell but is not overpowering and doesn’t have a taste. The applicator is big enough to get all the lip in one stroke. If you have bigger lips like I do, this is important. LypRadiance with Honey Rose is the one with some subtle shimmer in it. I didn’t like this one so much, mostly because of the smell and fruity flavour; it was really overpowering. The shimmer was very subtle and it left me wanting more. I can see little girls liking this one because of the smell and taste. Lypsensitivity with Aloe Vera is the only …

geekiviews: Gloves in a bottle

I was sent a sample of Gloves in a Bottle. It’s a shielding lotion much like the Skin MD Natural product I reviewed.. Both lotions perform the same actions, protect the outer layer of skin from harsh damage. Like Skin MD, it took a while for the shielding lotion to kick in. I’m not religious about putting lotion on and I’m sure that had something to do with my results. I like Glove in a bottle better, the lotion is a thicker consistency without leaving your hands greasy. I bottle is $12.95USD and contains about 120 applications. You can purchase Gloves in a Bottle in Toronto at: Yarn Boutique 1719 Bloor St W Toronto 416-760-9129 Quilters Garden 931 Kingston Rd Toronto 416-693-1616 How Gloves In A Bottle Works The outer layer of your skin consists of dead skin cells – it’s a protective layer designed to protect the delicate living cells of the deeper layers of skin. This layer of skin needs to stay moisturized to protect the deeper layers of skin. In order to …

geekiviews: Yardley of London

My friends at Brill Communications send me a little package that consisted of Yardley of London English Lavender Bath/Shower Gel and perfumed talc. I’m a lavender junkie, so I was really excited when I opened the package. The heritage of Yardley is Lavender. When Yardley first opened its doors in London in 1770, lavender was the herb chosen to perfume an exclusive range of luxury soaps, a decision that established English Lavender as the international signature fragrance of Yardley. No one knows lavender quite like Yardley. Since 1770 the company has specialised in providing the finest bath luxuries scented with the distinctive aromatic freshness of this classic English herb. Over the centuries Yardley has devoted its energy to searching out the finest quality plants and oils and to developing luxury fragrances with a contemporary feel. No other company understands the benefits of this unique herb better than Yardley. Lavender has the ability to uplift, calm, restore and heal. Justifiably the company claim is: Yardley English Lavender – The finest lavender in the world. Yardley lavender …

geekiviews: The Little Black Book of Style

The nice people from Harper Collins Canada send me the Little Black Book of Style by Nina Garcia to review. I gladly accepted as I love free books, and she gave me something to blog about. Nina Garcia is the Fashion Director at Elle Magazine and is one of the judges on Project Runway. The first thing I noticed about the book is the fantastic illustrations by Ruben Toledo. They make the book worth buying alone. The book has a well rounded focus and adds some historical context that is normally found in other offerings of the same genre. I’ll give you a little breakdown of each chapter 1. Be Your Own Muse – basic intro to the book basically telling people that how you present yourself is important, blah, blah 2. The Basics – Great list of items that should be in everyones closet. The items that are the basis of a great wardrobe. It emphasizes wearing what is looks good on you, buying your size and purging your closet. 3. Inspirations – Describes …
