Paris Is Burning

Paris is Burning is one of those documentaries that was really important to me as a teenager growing up. I was really into House Music and the scene just seemed so amazing and full of cool, artistic people. I’ve found it on YouTube and thought I should share it with those that might not have seen. Paris Is Burning is a 1990 documentary film directed by Jennie Livingston. Filmed in the mid-to-late 1980s, it chronicles the ball culture of New York City and the poor, African American and Latino gay and transgendered community involved in it. Many consider Paris Is Burning to be an invaluable documentary of the end of the “Golden Age” of New York City drag balls, as well as a thoughtful exploration of race, class, and gender in America.

Secret Garden – Versailles by Dior

The easiest way to get me to jump back on that fashion bandwagon is to use Depeche Mode’s Enjoy the Silence in your fashion video. Oh, hello there Dior. I think it’s love at first sight again! ‘Secret Garden – Versailles’ A film by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, starring Daria Strokus, Melissa Stasiuk and Xiao Wen Ju in La Galeries Des Glaces – Château de Versailles. Prada Spring Summer 2012 Ad Campaign Print and Video

Prada looked to vintage cars as her inspiration for Spring Summer 2012. The collection is playful and reminds me of Grease. The shoes are pretty killer too. This campaign video doesn’t even come close to being as good as Spring Summer 2011, it’s still pretty fun. Models: Natasha Poly, Guinevere van Seenus, Elise Crombez, Meghan Collison, Katryn Kruger and Ymre Stiekema. Photographer: Steven Meisel images: fashiongonerogue.com

The undergarments are handcrafted by highly trained designers, to uphold quality and precision with every piece that is created. This video is a behind-the-scenes look at the craftsmanship behind Fortnight Lingerie.

25 Ways To Tie A Scarf Video

This is the best thing I’ve ever watched on youTube. I have printouts from the Hermes website on scarf tying but I’m always looking for more ways to incorporate. This video is gives you options for all fabric weights. Wendy Nguyen and her Mystery Man did an amazing job. Read their behind the scenes account of the process, I found it fascinating. Thank you Flare Fashion for posting this: Viral Video: 25 Ways To Tie A Scarf – Flare.com.

Celine’s Spring Summer 2012 collection didn’t come across very well in photos but it’s quite beautiful in video. Phoebe Philo worked the wide belts, modified peplums, culottes and pleated skirts. Watch the full Celine Spring Summer 2012 fashion show. images: vogue.com

The Couture Process

I found this interesting video called The Couture Process which features and interview with Betsy Bloomingdale which was part of the FIDM Museum exhibition “Betsy Bloomingdale and the Haute Couture” in 2009. The video shows Mrs. Bloomingdale’s experiences in the haute couture with interviews clips from Marc Bohan, Hubert de Givenchy and James Galanos.

Balenciaga: Spanish Master

This is a great video about the Queen Sofía Spanish Institute’s Balenciaga: Spanish Master exhibit which ran earlier this year in New York City. Conceived of by our Chairman, Oscar de la Renta, curated by Vogue Contributing Editor Hamish Bowles, BALENCIAGA: Spanish Master was the first exhibition to consider the impact of Spain’s culture, history and art on one of its greatest twentieth-century sons, the legendary designer Cristóbal Balenciaga (1895-1972). Showcasing more than seventy items of Cristóbal Balenciaga clothing and accessories, BALENCIAGA: Spanish Master is the result of an unprecedented collaboration between the House of Balenciaga in Paris and an American institution.(source) My favourite tidbit of information gleamed from this video is that Oscar de la Renta worked for Cristóbal Balenciaga. Artinfo.com has some great photos of the BALENCIAGA: Spanish Master exhibit. This video was taken by Bart Boehlert who chatted curator Hamish Bowles.

Givenchy Fall Winter 2011 – 2012 Ad Campaign

I like the Givenchy Fall Winter 2011 – 2012 Ad Campaign and I don’t. I love that Mariacarla Boscono and Naomi Campbell are participating but the expressions in the photos seem a little forced. I’m usually a Givenchy die hard but the fall winter 2011 – 2012 season wasn’t appealing to me. Doesn’t make much sense since I usually love cat imagery. The men’s campaign is better executed. SHOWstudio does Spring Summer 2011 Haute Couture

The guys from SHOWstudio shoot model, Ming Xi in various iconic pieces from the Spring Summer 2011 Haute Couture collections. Designers featured include Jean Paul Gaultier, Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci, and John Galliano for Christian Dior. I’ve embedded the fashion film featuring Ming Xi here on the site but I urge you to check out the SHOWstudio site because each Haute Couture look get an in depth video treatment like the Givenchy one I posted a couple weeks ago. These videos give you an up close look at the dresses and talks about significant design details. Plus, there is an interesting interview with Ming.

The Machine

The Machine is another creepy video I recently viewed. It’s not fashion related like the Miu Miu FW2011 Film “MUTA” by Lucrecia Martel but still well done. A feeling of dread stuck with me after the first time I watched it. “The Machine” is an animated fable following the path of an innocently forged mechanical creature. As his independence and knowledge of the world grows on his journey, as does his desire to conquer all that we encounters, from the pastures of a farmer to the realm of man’s entire world.

Noc Kupaly, Poland

Noc KupaÅ‚y is a festival called Midsummer Night in English. They have a tradition of sending 1000s of paper lanterns in the air. It makes for spectacular video. Midsummer Night , also called night kupalnÄ… , kupalnockÄ… , Kupala , Sobótka or sobótkami – Slavic feast associated with the summer solstice the Sun , celebrated the shortest night of the year, which is usually (not including leap year) from 21 to 22 June (later eve of St. John – also commonly called St. John’s at night and then having many borrowings from earlier holidays – is celebrated with a 23 to June 24 ).
