Stillness at the Speed of Light – Chris Levine’s 3D Portrait of Grace Jones

I would love to be in London to see these portraits of Grace Jones.

Stillness at the Speed of Light - Chris Levine's 3D Portrait of Grace Jones

Light, sound and Grace Jones: three unremitting forces of nature. Chris Levine, the latest in a line of artists to work with Jones (Andy Warhol and Keith Haring came before him), has brought the elements together in his 3D portrait series Stillness at the Speed of Light. “How was I going to make any evolutionary step forward in a line of some of the extraordinary iconic images of her—I did my best,” Levine confesses. After a two-decade, self-imposed exile from the recording studio, Grace Jones—disco diva, über-model, Bond girl, gay icon and stuff of Studio 54 legend—made a whirlwind return with the tour for her 2008 album, Hurricane. Levine, a ground-breaking light artist whose visceral work with laser beams has led to collaborations with Mario Testino and Hussein Chalayan was commissioned to work on the lighting following an introduction to Jones from master milliner, Philip Treacy. And it was a Swarovski crystal encrusted bowler hat by Treacy (one of his typically exotic, gravity-defying creations for Jones's tour) that proved the showstopper, reflecting shards of light over the audience as the high-beam laser hit it. “Laser and crystal is an alchemy I’ve experimented with for years, so when I saw the hat for the first time it was obvious what I was going to do with it,” Levine says. Jones then invited Levine to illuminate her portrait and to direct the upcoming music video for her single “Love You to Life,” which is a first for the artist. “It’s pretty raw and elemental—just the primal essence of Grace and light,” Levine says. Stillness at the Speed of Light is on show at the Vinyl Factory Gallery, in Soho, London through May 15th.(NOWNESS)

Dior Homme – The White Room

Dior Homme - The White Room
I like this moody short film for the Fall 2010 – 2011 Dior Homme collection.

Kris Van Assche’s fall 2010 Dior Homme collection is a triumphant affirmation of the house’s aesthetic for the new decade: clean lines, translucent layers of fabric, deconstructionist touches and oversized silhouettes. Quietly iconoclastic, it’s a tempting and elegant proposition for men who have grown out of their skinny jeans. The standout piece of the collection is the floor-length trench, a deceptively light garment that undulated elegantly down the runway in Paris in June. Unveiled under a ring of fluorescent lights, accompanied by the Sisters of Mercy’s “Temple of Love,” the piece mixes bold 80s power dressing with the swaddled folds of fabric Van Assche had witnessed in Indian dress on a trip to the country last August. The collection’s sensuous feeling of movement provided the inspiration for today’s film, created to mark the occasion of Dior Homme’s first UK flagship, which opened this week in the Westfield Center, London. The entrancing vignette is styled by Robbie Spencer and directed by photographer Sharif Hamza, who conceived it as “something like a fashion show that never happened,” setting it in a mysterious, bleached corridor (recreated from a Polaroid of an anonymous interior that had been lying on Hamza’s desk for some months). According to Hamza, the film creates a “dialogue without words,” in which nuanced glances and a slowly advancing zoom lens come together for a mysterious, cinematic experience.( NOWNESS).

New Photos – Marni x Current Elliot Fall 2010

Marni x Current Elliot Fall 2010

images: Dazed Digital

In February, I posted about the Marni X Current Elliot denim collaboration.

Marni and Current Elliot have teamed up for denim collaboration for Fall 2010. Marni designer, Consuelo Castiglioni, was given free reign to design denim that fit with the Marni aesthetic. This is her first denim line

Dyes and washes span from light azure to indigo and from faded to saturated. A few styles will be sold with a black cotton belt that Castiglioni likes knotted as a ribbon. Other details include cloth borders, either press studded or piped in leather. Retail prices for the Marni-Current Elliott jeans range from $250 to $500 and will be carried in Marni stores starting in June.

There are some new photos out of the collection from Dazed Digital and Nylon. High Snobette has posted an editorial shot that features the jeans in the May issue of Vogue.  I’m liking the styles I’ve posted here with my favourite being the dark denim style in the first picture.  Lucky Mag is reporting that prices will range from $182-$509 and availability at Marni boutiques, Nordstrom, Bergdorf Goodman and Saks.  No word on Canadian availability yet

FLY16X9 Interviews Karl Lagerfeld

The Karl Lagerfeld Bag Spring 2009

I found a video interview of Karl Lagerfeld by FLY16X9.

FLY16x9 presents an exclusive behind the scenes interview with Karl Lagerfeld at the opening of his photo exhibition ‘Farewell to Daylight’ at new York’s PACE/MACGILL GALLERY.

I’ve place the interview under the cut because the video autoplays.

i want: Primo Lace Up Wedge Booties by Elizabeth and James

Primo Lace Up Wedge Booties by Elizabeth and James

I don’t know why I’m loving the Primo Lace Up Wedge Booties by Elizabeth and James . They are blush coloured for god sakes. There is something about the laces, the snake-embossed leather trim and tweed.

You can find these booties online at shopbop.com and Bergdorfs. Bergorfs has a black and blush version in addition to the regular blush version.

Holt Renfrew carries Elizabeth and James shoes.  I haven’t seen these yet.

Group Therapy with Dermalogica

Dermalogica

I’m a big Dermalogica fan. I got into to their skin care regimen a few years ago. Even though I receive products from other brands I always have some sort of Dermalogica product in my routine.  I attended a Dermalogica event called Group Therapy with .  It was a bloggers only event.  Dermalogica is smart and called us online editors instead of bloggers in their communication.  It was a personal face analysis session at the Dermalogica Training Centre in Toronto. I wanted to take advantage of the Dermalogica experts and check that I had the right product mix. It was a very informative session and it changed up my routine.

Prior to attending the session my kit included: Special Cleansing Gel, Skin Prep Scrub, Multi-Active Toner, Total Eye Care and Active Moist moisturizer.  At the session, my expert recommended some different products in the line. I discovered the PreCleanse as the first step. It’s a lightweight cleansing oil that removes sebum and oil based debris from the skin before using the Special Cleansing Gel. It even removes eye makeup. The Multi-Active Toner didn’t change in my routine.  I now use the Daily Resurfacer or Daily Microfoliant instead of the Skin Prep Scrub. The Daily Resurfacer is a small finger mitt that has a mixture of exfoliating products . You rub the mitt gently in circles on your face avoiding the eye area.  I didn’t try the Daily Microfoliant in the session but I’ve added it to my routine.  I alternate it with the Resurfacer. It comes in powder form and you add a bit of water to make a paste and then rub gently into the skin. I can never go back to the Skin Prep Scurb again. It isn’t as effective as the Daily Resurfacer or Daily Microfoliant.  I tried the C-12 Concentrate Extreme C targeted treatment from Dermalogica’s  ChromaWhite line. For that last couple months I’ve used the Génifique, Youth activating concentrate and Genifique Eye Youth Activating Eye Concentrate (Both courtesy of L’Oreal Canada). I really like this product.  The Skin Smoothing Cream was the moisturizer suggested and I love it.  It has a heavier weight than Active Moist but it hydrates better and I like it’s smoothing properties.  Finally, it was time for sunscreen and I tried the Sheer Moisturizer spf 15.  I asked about eye cream and what I was using was fine, but I tried a bit of the Multivitamin Power Firm.

After putting on all these products my skin looked clean and healthy. My skin was so incredibly soft. I was totally impressed.  It’s something I just haven’t been able to replicate so far.  I need all the tools.  It was good to have the expertise of the Dermalogica gurus because I like the new set of products better. At the end of the event we received gift bags with full-sized bottles of product. It contained PreCleanse, Special Cleansing Gel, Multi-Active Toner, Daily Microfoliant and Skin Smoothing  Cream.  I bought a pack of the Daily Resurfacer at my gym but they didn’t have the C-12 Concentrate Extreme C. My hunt for it continues so I can recreated the extreme skin softness from that day in the Dermalogica lab.
