What fashion koolaid was Anita drinking in 2009

Anita03

Anita in custom Mi Concept leather dress at Holt Renfrew TIFF party, Sept 2009

There are some trends I got behind this year that aren’t for everyone. I’ve drunk the fashion koolaid if you will on some trends. Here are the ones that made it into my closet.

I love the strong shoulder and thigh high boot trend, but it was somethings that I never made it to my closet.

Hi Anita,

I know you’re a huge fan of shapewear and I would love your advice. I’ve never purchased any before, but require some to wear under my wedding dress. it needs to target my tummy area and doesn’t have to extend that far down my legs (i.e., I’ve seen ‘bike short’ type shapewear and this is unnecessary for me). It has to be in nude.

Do you have any recommendations? What sort of price point do your recommendations come in at? Any brands to avoid?

Sounds like you are looking for the shapewear that looks like a strapless swimsuit. I’ve never tried one of those on so I can only make recommendations based on experience with the versions that have the leg option.

I have Nancy Ganz and Secret shapewear in my closet. They both offer medium support which makes them quite comfortable. These will smooth lines but not really reduce any size or do that much butt lifting.

I received a sample of Sculptz at fashion week. I got a pair of shorts. They were very, very tight and I could barely get out of them. It might have been the size, but I can’t imagine using this product for an extended period of time.

I have no experience with Spanx but I think it’s probably worth looking into.

The Secret shapewear I received from a PR company representing Secret but the Nancy Ganz I bought at the Bay. The Bay is a great place to check out shapewear. There are a lot of different brands and options in styles. Go to the Bloor and Yonge location or Queen Street for largest selection. Legs Beautiful is also a great place for shapewear, they have a lot of Spanx.

I’m not sure what type of dress you have but you’ll want to pay attention to finish on the edges of the garments, so that they don’t show through the dress.

I’ve tried the shapewear that extends to just under the breasts. I find this a bit uncomfortable if the rise on the shapewear is too long. It ends up bunching. Make sure to watch out for this. You can also get shapewear underwear that have an extended tummy panel. I was sent a pair that I love.

Find out what the exchange policy is. It would be great if you can try things on with the dress to make sure.

It tends to be a bit pricey but try to factor fit into how much you are willing to spend.

Good luck!

– Sabina did write back and she was also going to check her regular lingerie store Melmira. She was able to bring her dress with her for fittings, which is great.

i got: Marc by Marc Jacobs Tobo Handbag

Marc by Marc Jacobs Tobo Handbag

The Oracle stared at my Weekend Bag by m0581. “This”, he said complete with hand gestures, “has to go.” It’s true, my beautiful robin’s egg blue bag had seen better days.

Marc by Marc Jacobs Tobo Handbag

So for Christmas, I received theMarc by Marc Jacobs Tobo Handbag as a replacement. I helped pick it out too. I love the colour and the fact it’s made out of neoprene. The neoprene has the letter of Marc by Marc Jacobs embedded in the fabric but it’s not in order.

The Marc by Marc Jacobs Tobo Handbag is available at Holt Renfrew.

geekiviews: Jean Leggings by Joe’s Jeans

Jean Leggings by Joe's Jeans

I received a package containing a pair of Zip Ankle Jean Legging in Black by Joe’s Jeans from Holt Renfrew PR just before Christmas. Jean Leggings were never something I would have tried before this package arrived. I hate to say it, I’ve drunk the koolaid, I like them.

Jean Leggings by Joe's Jeans

When I pulled them out of the magenta bag, they looked a little small. I’ve come to realize that you need to buy them smaller than you think. They are denim and do stretch a bit. They are comfortable, it was the first thing that surprised me. They are like wearing non-denim leggings. The fabric is stretchy and soft. The zippers on the side make it easy to put on and remove.

I checked out the stash at Holt’s. They have a ton of different styles included distressed denim, acid wash and  tie dye. The price range is $116 – $140. The pair I have are $128. I thought it was hilarious that the distressed denim ones cost $140 even though from a production standpoint I can understand.

I hate the term jeggings and you’ll never hear me use it.  It makes me angry.

Oh New Year’s Eve, what a hilarious party. I didn’t take any photos myself but a photographer named Will took a ton of photos and posted them on his website Lost in the WILLDERNESS.

My mask is creepy as hell isn’t it.  When I showed it to my cats they were hissing like crazy at me.

I’m loving Photoscape.  It’s a great freeware photo editor and it allowed me to combine these photos with ease.

She Takes on the World Women of the Year 2009

She Takes on the World Women of the Year 2009

On December 31, I received an email with this subject line, “You are a Woman of the Year Honoree.” WTF is this, I thought. Woman of the Year?  Is someone playing a joke on me. It has to be spam, like that Princeton Premier stuff.

It was real and it shocked me.

There are many large publications that publish an annual Women of the Year list and I’m always disappointed when I see the lists populated with female celebrities and women who already have a very high profile, not to say these women haven’t had notable accomplishments. She Takes on the World Women of the Year pays tribute to a diverse group of women ranging from teachers to social innovators to entrepreneurs. These are women we have been inspired by this year in our every day lives. They may not be celebrities -although some of them are well on their way -but one thing is for sure: these bold, fearless women are taking on the world.

After sorting through over one hundred incredible nominations, we had the difficult task of determining the Women of the Year. A special thank you to all the nominators. This could not have been done without you!

I had never heard of the She Takes on the World website before so I did some digging. Natalie MacNeil is the founder and she has an impressive resume. She’s Canadian too. It was becoming apparent that this wasn’t some random website on the Internet.

She Takes On The World is an award-winning blog for women entrepreneurs.

Women are starting small businesses and taking the self-employment route at twice the rate of our male counterparts. More and more women are embracing entrepreneurship as a lifestyle and She Takes On The World aims to support and inspire women entrepreneurs. Here, you will find articles on a variety of subjects related to entrepreneurship, interviews with fabulous women entrepreneurs, business resources, and a free directory for women-owned businesses.

So there is my face among the other honourees. It feels a little strange, I’m just a fashion blogger and some of these women really do great work. I’ll take it though, with gratitude. What an amazing end of year gift. Thank you.
