Sasha is looking to damn cute in these H&M ads. Adorable. the Fashion Spot
I’ve been called the crazy cat lady a couple of times from friends so it’s pretty fitting that I love this new Lanvin ad campaign. I’m happy with all the shots but I don’t get the Madonna crotch shot effect from Louis Vuitton Spring 2009 that I’m noticing in different campaigns right now. the Fashion Spot
I got a phone called from Rea McNamara who wanted me to be part of her monthly fashion column for Toronto’s Eye Weekly called Inspiration Point. The print version is available now, grab it (8/6/09 – 8/12/09). I’ve got some I want – I got exclusive outtakes from the Inspiration Point photoshoot to share with you all. The concept: Wanted to not only celebrate Grace Jones’ iconic style but also her impact as a transgressive performance artist who challenged racial and gender stereotypes by interrogating preconceived notions ’round the black body. Similar to Josephine Baker, Jones flipped the ‘Black Venus’ script by fucking with ‘primitivist’ ideas (ie. dark black female as animalistic, ‘jungle’ etc) in very much a postmodern context (by doing it herself, it became about empowerment). While I think it’s GREAT that Jones was this big F/W 09 influence, her talent as a performer seems to be ignored. Stuff that I wanted include but couldn’t: her mom was a seamstress that did handmade Givenchy patterns for Grace, her 1970s Paris modelling career (she …
This is an unusual campaign where Raquel Zimmermann plays both a man and the woman. What strikes me most about the campaign in the Dr Martens in image above. Are these the final product? Is this the final product of the hint I posted? If they are, oh boy! images: the Fashion Spot
I usually one to skip lingerie shows. They are usually held a clubs and aren’t really a fashion but a vehicle to get horny men into the venue and buying alcohol. However last year I attended Lingerie Francaise presents Secret of Seduction which was a showcase of the top companies in France. I was a big fan of two of the companies in the show so I decided to attend. To my surprised I enjoyed myself so when the opportunity came up again I said yes and brought my trusty photog www.paulbaikphoto.com to document. I knew Paul would enjoy this gig immensely. The night will once again feature coveted brands last year’s celebrated evening; Lejaby, Elixir, Simone Perele, Chantelle, and Passionata will all share their unique fashion visions. Newcomers to the event Empreinte and Gerbe hosiery round out the selection for an evening that promises to provide a truly comprehensive presentation of the seductive and feminine world of lingerie. Details and embellishments are a strong trend for 2009/2010 with florals, embroidery and lace appearing in …
So Rad Hourani has created a diffusion line called Rad by Rad Hourani. Price points are from $100 – $300, very reasonable considering the price of his main line. It’s all unisex clothing which explains the fact that both the men and women are the same size in these photos. The collection will be available starting in November in select retailers and online. I’m sure Reborn in Montreal will carry it. I’m curious to see what Toronto retailers pick it up too. I’m dying to add one of those layering pieces to my closet and perhaps a pair of pants if I can fit into them. Tommy Ton has some great photos on his site Jak&Jil. images: wwd.com
I can’t even believe that I’m posting this. I heard that Gucci was finally shipping to Canada through their website. I decided to see what I could find. Division’ high heel over-the-knee platform boots and the ‘Division’ flat over-the-knee boots respectively. I’m kinda drooling over Gucci and it’s frightening me. I’m totally drinking the boot legging kool aid, it’s not even funny. They are like pants and I picture short shift dresses and cropped motorcycle jackets. I’ll never own any though, these Gucci ones are $3400!!!!! The flat boot is so perfect too. Black stretch leather, Le Sigh. image: gucci.com
While I was on vacation from my day job I attended the Fashion Magazine fall 09 trend preview event. This was the magazines take on the key trends for the upcoming fall 2009 – 2010 season. I awlays find it weird to hear about the season during it’s execution in the market. By this time I’m already over the trends and just want to see the merchandise in person. Sometimes I get re-inspired or opinions change about collections after touching the garments. Prada fall 2009 collection is a good example of this effect, I’m totally gag over the collection now after seeing pieces in the store. Time helps to ease initial perception of a collection. The preview took place at the the beautiful Andrew Richard Design Loft in the east end high end furniture shop mecca of King Street. The space was beautiful and we were treated to drinks and canapes. There were a few Canadian Designers with samples for viewing in the space: Ezra Constantine, Miss Rowe and Mercy. The presentation was well rounded …
A Wool drop lapel jacket by Stella McCartney The Jacket is being pushed so hard right now in fashion that I’ve felt a little bit of trend fatigue. That feeling went away as soon as I saw this perfect jacket by Stella McCartney. image: net-a-porter.com
The Prada Fall 2009 – 2010 Lookbook is awesome. They are always a little twisted and wacky. I’m even digging the collection now. I initially wasn’t a fan.
Ever since the shock of seeing short dresses on the Valentino fall 2009 couture runway I’ve been thinking about mini dresses. Cashmere Cowl Neck Leather Mini Dress by Rick Owens This must be the softest feeling mini dress ever. Buttery Rick Owens leather and cashmere, heaven! Crepe Studded Mini Dress by Jo No Fui Jeweled Bustier Dress by Alessandro Dell’ Acqua For kicks the special order Jeweled Bustier Dress.
The most interesting couture presentation was done by Adeline André. It consisted of one look for men and one look for women. To demonstrate her patented three-armhole design (and reveal just how much fabric went into each piece), the four items, including a shirt, jacket and coat for men, were first pegged on a clothesline before being donned by the models. The women’s look, a layered silk crepe dress merging from flesh color tones to pinks and reds, took minutes to put on as meters of fabric and a staggering 21 armholes were wound around. “I wanted to show my work, and the history of the armholes, in a very precise way,†André said. (source: WWD.com). I love the performance art aspect of this collection and the garment itself. The layers of colours gradually moving from light to dark is a nice touch. images: wwd.com
The Cut gives us a glimpse into the making of a Chanel Haute Couture outfit. I thought the Chanel Couture collection was a trainwreck but this video great for understanding the process.

I’m totally bizarre. I really like the Christoper Kane Gorilla Tshirts. Chimp Tshirt Baboon Tshirt images: luisaviaroma.com
Givenchy Haute Couture, Hot Damn. I’m always excited to see what is going to come out of Riccardo Tisci. Here is a young man that is keeping the tradition of couture alive. This collection was heavily influenced by Morocco. The details were just incredible on the clothes and man on the models. I died when I saw those gold crystallized faces. This is my Haute Couture show of the season. I’m calling it now. I’ve gone crazy with the photos so you can see what I’m gushing about. I’m hoping the rest just get better after Givenchy. Check out Jak&Jil for some amazing shots. images: Style.it and WWD.
The Christian Lacroix show felt like a funeral to me. It was very dark with a lot of black instead of his usual explosion of colour. I imagine darkness was unavoidable for what could be the last Christian Lacroix Haute Couture collection. Hell, it could be the last Christian Lacroix collection ever. Haute Couture was touch and go, many were worried that it wouldn’t happen. However, the most amazing thing happened. All of Lacroix’s friends, suppliers and employees donated their time and materials. The collection was done for free. What an amazing tribute. Check out this video which talks more about how the collection came about. I admit that Lacroix has never been one of my favourite couturiers but his mastery of the medium is undeniable. I hope he doesn’t leave the stage just yet as it would be a huge disservice to the whole industry. That knowledge needs to be passed on. To me this collection felt half done or half assed. A lot of the looks featured no bottoms or tops. It was very bizarre. All I could think was: Is this what recession couture looks like? Did you run out of money for fabric? There were some interesting looks like this lace number. The rest, very beautiful but I was bored. However, I really loved the hats. images: Style.com
I like the style of the images from the Gianfranco Ferrè Fall 2009 – 2010 Ad Campaign. images: Fashion Copious
Giuseppe Zanotti Woven Metallic Peep Toe Ankle Boots Silver shoes of any style done well, I’m in love.
Ya’ll know I went crazy over Rick Owens Fall 2009 – 2010 collection. Well the stuff is hitting the stores and it’s gorgeous. Elbow Wing Cropped Front Leather Jacket This jacket is my favourite of the bunch. White leather for winter, Hot. It’s like leather tails, love it! Oversized Coat Felt Padded Shoulder Jacket Rick brings out some strong shoulder. Mikado Trim Shearling Leather Jacket Wrap Shoulder Tie Leather Jacket
I’m a really big fan of the Alexander Wang Expandable Shoulder Bag. I even loved the denim version. This picture is from the Holt Renfrew Fall 2009 – 2010 Womenswear Media Preview, where I got to see and touch the bag. You can purchase Alexander Wang handbags at Holt Renfrew and Reborn
So the news broke last night, Jimmy Choo will be the next designer for H&M. This a big one for all the Sex in The City wannabes. This autumn, British accessory brand Jimmy Choo will bring its international glamour and covetable shoes and bags to selected H&M stores. The collection will be available from November 14 in around 200 stores across the world. It is the first time that H&M is collaborating with an accessories brand, and to celebrate Jimmy Choo will extend its design vision for this collection to women’s clothing to complement the accessories. Further exciting news is that this collaboration includes a men’s collection of shoes, bags and accessories. I’m not a fan of Jimmy Choo, his shoes do nothing for me in general. I’m hoping H&M does the right thing and make the shoes from leather and not plastic. If you have seen the shoes lying on the sale tables right now you can understand what I mean. A Jimmy Choo shoe out of plastic, it’s like blasphemy to me. I …
I received an email from designer, TÔ Long-Nam. Of all the information I’ve received from designers over the years here, this was the best crafted email I’ve read. I appreciated the attention the detail and biographical information immensely. He was born in Viêtnam, grew up in Munich and went to school at the Academy of Fine Arts Berlin-Weissensee in Fashion-Design. Long-Nam worked with famous stylists Victoria Bartett and Patti Wilson. His forey into fashion design started as a design assistant for Lanvin menswear. Positive encouragement after participating in the 21st International Fashion Competition prompted him to start his own line. He has also collaborated with designer Alessandra Facchinetti while she was at Valentino. While working on the Spring 2010 collection he is working for Superfine London, a denim company I’m very fond of. All this information was great, but I would have been sold at the photos. Long-Nam says this about his Fall 2009 – 2010 collection: Force has always been a keyword in the design principles of TÔ Long-Nam. For Fall/Winter 2009 the collection …
