Corsage Project 2010

Corsage Project 2010

I learned about the Corsage Project way to late last year to post about it or volunteer. This year I’m on top of my game and I’ve volunteered already. I don’t know why this organization struck a chord with me so much. I went to my prom (I was one of those sole prom goers) and didn’t think much of it. Although it was fun talking to the teaching staff hammered out of my tree. Despite my ambivalent feeling about prom I knew I wanted to help out. Mission To provide formal gowns and accessories, free of charge, to Toronto area high school girls who are unable to purchase their own prom attire. Background The Corsage Project was founded in 1999 as a nonprofit organization that works in partnership with the Children’s Aid Foundation. The founders believe that every high school girl should have the opportunity to celebrate the milestone of her high school graduation with pride and in style. Students are identified through confidential referrals from school guidance counselors, Children’s Aid, youth, or social …

1st Annual FTA Design Forward Award

1st Annual FTA Design Forward Award is for eco fashion designers in Canada. The FTA decided to create the award in order to recognize the Canadian sustainable fashion designers. Each nominee was hand-selected by FTA based on a set of criteria that we developed. With the assistance of Mary Hanlon at Social Alterations, we were able to filter all the nominees through the criteria, resulting in the 14 we have chosen to feature for the Award. There are 14 nominees and the public is invited to review and vote for your favourite designer. Voting closes on April 16, 2010. The FTA created profiles on each designer to help you choose. Each of the profiles we created include images of the designs and how each nominee held up to our criteria. We also included our comments – what we like about each one of them, and where we think there is room for improvements. They will take the top three designers chosen by the public. Those winners will face a jury of recognized leaders in fashion …

Miss J. Alexander, Follow the Model inscription

Miss J. Alexander Celebrity Walk Off at Holt Renfew Video

A few weeks ago I attended the Miss J. Alexander Celebrity Walk Off at Holt Renfew. The show was a lot of fun and afterwards I got to meet Miss J Alexander himself where he wrote a super cute inscription in his book, Follow the Model. I found some video of the event. There is the official Holt Renfrew video which is a series of clips and interviews and video from youtube which is the complete celebrity walkoff. PROM at the ROM 2009

PROM V: Noir – March 27, 2010

I’m very excited to be attending one of the hottest parties in the city, Prom at the ROM, PROM V: NOIR. I’ll be bringing my trusty photographer Paul Baik with me as we try to capture the spirit and fashion of the event. Welcome to the dark side of the ROM with PROM V: NOIR, a thrilling night of dramatic glamour and cinematic fantasy inspired by the ROM’s captivating collection of winged creatures in the newly revamped Bat Cave and the recently opened Life in Crisis: Schad Gallery of Biodiversity. Hosted by MTV’s Dan Levy and Jessi Cruickshank, hundreds of YPC members and guests will take a sensational step back into vintage Hollywood complete with private eyes and femmes fatales. Experience the melodrama of a dazzling Golden Age film première—with a contemporary twist—as you pose for a mob of flashbulbs on the black carpet, investigate tempting diversions in dark shadows, sip swishy cocktails, and shimmy the night away on a fierce dance floor to the sounds of a live Big Band and stellar Toronto DJs. …

Miss J. Alexander, Follow the Model inscription

Miss J. Alexander Celebrity Walk Off at Holt Renfew

Only Miss J. Alexander could have gotten me out of the house on Saturday battling the wind and rain. He was hosting a Celebrity Walk Off at Holt Renfrew which pitted some local celebs against each other on the runway. The winner of the celebs was Ciara Hunt from Hello Magazine. It was well deserved and super cut to see her children cheering her on. Then there was a contest where 10 members of the public were given and chance to impress Miss J.  Auntie Fashion asked me to strut my stuff in the public contest but I was nervous and opted out. The only strutting I do is on my way to work with iPod in ear. I’m sure I’m a spectacle in the Financial District.  I was wearing my hunters that day too. Sorry Auntie Fashion 🙁 The event was one of the best public event at Holts I’ve been to. Despite the weather it was packed in the shoe department. There was a great mix of people. Some people brought there families …

The MINI Beachcomber Concept - Toronto Autoshow 2010

The MINI Beachcomber Concept – Toronto Autoshow 2010

I haven’t been to the Autoshow in at least twenty years so I jumped at the chance to write about the new The MINI Beachcomber Concept car. The MINI Beachcomber was making a short stop in Toronto for its first Canadian appearance before being whisked to Europe for another autoshow. It may seem a little weird to my regular readers, but I’m a huge MINI fan. I love luxury and sports cars with Porsche being my favourite. Way back in 2006, I wrote a post for blogTO about Zipcar and my first experience driving a MINI. Luxury event managers, CANDICE&ALISON were hired to produce the MINI Beachcomber launch with the theme of beach tailgate party. They brought together a mix of fashion designers, models, makeup artists and product designers to contribute to the launch. The theme was heavily influenced by retro 50s beach party pop culture. Canadian designer Farley Chatto created MINI branded pin-up retro polka dot bikinis, a pair of board shorts and sheer tank. Jon, Vlada (black hair) and Caitlin of Elite models stepped …

IDS10: I want – I got Favourite Things Part 3

I love wandering the aisles of The Interior Design Show floor scanning for things that catch my eye.  This year Paul and I avoided the products.  We were on a tight timeline and learned what to focus on from last year.  Sleek kitchen appliance and tiling are not things I’m too interested in or have use for on I want – I got.  This is the final post in my three part series called IDS10: I want – I got Favourite Things. Andrew Richard Designs x Bustle – Designers pairing up with Designers for a range of outdoor furniture based on the Spring 2010 Collection. Smash – I loved the mismatch bookshelves with strategically placed lights Balance Glassworks – What a novel concept for display and space saving.  Note: This image was incorrectly tagged as Tsunami Glassworks in Part 2.  The correct image now displays so visit Part 2 to see. Slide – The glowing lamps attracted me. The lookbook has more goodies that I will scan and share soon You can view all the …
