Gil Carvalho Fall Winter 2010 - 2011

Gil Carvalho Fall Winter 2010 – 2011

Footwear designer Gil Carvalho sent me an email letting me know about his Fall Winter 2010 collection. I was quiet surprised and excited to hear from him personally. This London based shoe designer has a background in fine art, art history and architecture. Gil studied shoe design at Cordwainers College at London College of Fashion. The lookbook talks about the inspiration for Gil Carvalho Fall Winter 2010 – 2011 collection. “With it’s emphasis on the sculptural, inspired by the Abstract artist Rolph Scarlett, the latest collection explores the relationship between a woman and her shoes, one that had endured teh passage of time but remains as passionate as ever. The palette of colour gravitates from monochrome to metallic pink from deep matt through to the high shine of patent, a thoroughly paradoxical collection full of opposites.” Gil Carvalho platforms are as tall and sleek as buildings.  The Comet style on the left has about a 3/4 inch platform (20 mm) platform and 4.5 inch (120mm) heel.  Buzz on the right has about a 2 inch …

Haider Ackermann comes to Toronto

Haider Ackermann comes to Toronto

There was small group of people to gathered to see the Haider Ackermann Fall 2010 fashion show at the ROM. It was a real treat.  119 Corbo is the exclusive Toronto retailer for Haider Ackermann and they were responsible for bringing him to the city. Holt Renfrew Calgary and Vancouver will carry Haider in the fall. I wrote about the Haider Ackermann Fall Winter 2010 show during Paris fashion week. This presentation wasn’t the full collection but it was amazing to see the pieces up close. Haider is a master of materials. The draping and architectural details were phenomenal. The collection and music almost brought a tear to my eye. It’s the same emotional reaction that I get when I go to the symphony or opera.  I wish I had the access to play and touch the clothing. I’m going to have to befriend Linda Perisa, owner of 119 Corbo. My photos were completely shit. I still have to learn how to take good low light shots with the Olympus E-PL1. The two shots I’ve …

Todd Lynn Fall Winter 2010 - 2011

Playing with the Todd Lynn Fall Winter 2010 – 2011 Collection

Work kept me from catching the tail end of the Todd Lynn trunk show and personal appearance. I was a little bummed as I really wanted to meet Todd. He looks so cute in his photos. He also reminds me of Rick Owens so I’m drooling a little.  I think it’s the long black hair, le sigh. I missed the designer but I got to play in his designs.  On Saturday I made a quick trip to the private shopping area at Holt Renfrew and played dress up.  Every leather jacket made my waist look tiny.  They totally fit like a glove.  The fur was outrageous.  I like the androgyny of both the mens and womens lines. Todd Lynn price points are relatively cheaper than other brands doing leather with the same aesthetic. I even was recruited to model Todd Lynn for a customer. She was trying to decide what items to pick up from the trunk show.

Holt Renfrew Fall Winter 2010 – 2011 Womenswear Preview

Givenchy Fall Winter 2010 - 2011 Ad Campaign

Givenchy Fall Winter 2010 – 2011 Ad Campaign

The Fall Winter 2010 – 2011 ad campaign from Givenchy is totally amazing. I love the colour and composition. The cast of models is what makes this so much fun. Yay for the diverse group.  Of course I’m happy because Mariacarla Boscono is making an appearance too. Complicit looks, and the promise of a kiss between two women: an ambiguous mix of masculine and feminine looks against hues of red, blue, white, grey and beige: the Givenchy campaign for F-W 2010-2011, photographed by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggot in Paris. Sophisticated images against a provocative background. In the forefront, the collection designed by Riccardo Tisci. What has people talking — and caused the images to make the rounds of the web even before the campaign has been officially published — is the presence of Lea T: ex-assistant of Tisci, currently a student of veterinary medicine, ex-model and transexual. Tisci wanted to use her “for her fragile appearance and her aristocratic air.” Together with Lea T are the models Maria Carla Boscono — a close friend …

Complexgeometries – Fall Winter 2010 – 2011

Complexgeometries Fall Winter 2010 – 2011

Yes, the Complexgeometries Fall Winter 2010 – 2011 looks are out. I’m always excited to see what Clayton comes up with season to season. I’m a big fan and I’m enjoying watching the evolution of shapes and fabrics. Fall 2010 looks great and I’m liking the sheer layers.  I love the grey tank wrap (middle look top photo) and I can see it easily being the next complex piece in my wardrobe. images: complexgeometries.com

Dior Homme - The White Room

Dior Homme – The White Room

I like this moody short film for the Fall 2010 – 2011 Dior Homme collection. Kris Van Assche’s fall 2010 Dior Homme collection is a triumphant affirmation of the house’s aesthetic for the new decade: clean lines, translucent layers of fabric, deconstructionist touches and oversized silhouettes. Quietly iconoclastic, it’s a tempting and elegant proposition for men who have grown out of their skinny jeans. The standout piece of the collection is the floor-length trench, a deceptively light garment that undulated elegantly down the runway in Paris in June. Unveiled under a ring of fluorescent lights, accompanied by the Sisters of Mercy’s “Temple of Love,” the piece mixes bold 80s power dressing with the swaddled folds of fabric Van Assche had witnessed in Indian dress on a trip to the country last August. The collection’s sensuous feeling of movement provided the inspiration for today’s film, created to mark the occasion of Dior Homme’s first UK flagship, which opened this week in the Westfield Center, London. The entrancing vignette is styled by Robbie Spencer and directed by …

Marni x Current Elliot Fall 2010

New Photos – Marni x Current Elliot Fall 2010

In February, I posted about the Marni X Current Elliot denim collaboration. Marni and Current Elliot have teamed up for denim collaboration for Fall 2010. Marni designer, Consuelo Castiglioni, was given free reign to design denim that fit with the Marni aesthetic. This is her first denim line Dyes and washes span from light azure to indigo and from faded to saturated. A few styles will be sold with a black cotton belt that Castiglioni likes knotted as a ribbon. Other details include cloth borders, either press studded or piped in leather. Retail prices for the Marni-Current Elliott jeans range from $250 to $500 and will be carried in Marni stores starting in June. There are some new photos out of the collection from Dazed Digital and Nylon. High Snobette has posted an editorial shot that features the jeans in the May issue of Vogue.  I’m liking the styles I’ve posted here with my favourite being the dark denim style in the first picture.  Lucky Mag is reporting that prices will range from $182-$509 and …

Mikhael Kale Fall Winter 2010 - 2011

Mikhael Kale Fall Winter 2010 up close

I loved Mikhael Kale Fall Winter 2010 – 2011 collection. On the weekend I got a chance to see the clothing up close. Mikhael was shooting the lookbook in an alley in the east end. I brought the trusty Olympus E-PL1 put her into macro mode and went to town with pictures. You really need to see the details of Mikhael Kale’s dresses, it’s incredible.  The garments are like works of art. Mikhael is getting some great press at the moment. He was featured in Vogue.com when Mark Holgate came to town. The latest celebrity to be seen in his designs is J.Lo. Beyonce and Ciara have already been spotted in his work. See all my photos from the shoot. Mihkael Kale is available at Holt Renfrew in Canada.

China Textile News

I’m quoted in the China Textile News Weekly Magazine

I was asked to provide a short quote on trends during LG Fashion Week for the China Textile News Weekly Magazine. I want – I got has made it to print in PRC. Ha Ha. Burberry Fall Winter 2010 - 2011 Shoes

Burberry Prorsum Fall Winter 2010 – 2011 Shoes

I really enjoyed the Burberry Fall Winter 2010 – 2011 collection. There was lots of shearling, huge collars and aviation influence. It was a coat lovers dream: cropped, long, oversized and sleek. The clothing definitely took a back seat. Burberry Prorsum continued with their “clunky stompers” footware trend juxtaposed with sleek boots. Rugged shearling lined boots with multiple buckles are transformed with a stiletto.   They came in various heights too. A stark contrast to the clunky stompers were sleek thigh high boots in leather and reptile skin. I like the shearling boots.  What do you think?  The ankle boot version is my favourite.  I think a flat version of the knee-high version would be amazing for fall.  The models in the show aren’t having problems walking in them so I’m assuming they aren’t too heavy.  There is a lot of stomping though.  Check out the full Burberry Prorsum Fall Winter 2010 – 2011 womenswear show. images: eastnews.ru, style.com

Balenciaga Ready to Wear - Fall 2010

Balenciaga Fall Winter 2010 – 2011 Video (Full Show)

I found the full show video for the Balenciaga Ready to Wear – Fall Winter 2010 collection. The soundtrack is killer. This video is great for providing all the angles of the models so you can see the back details. The clothing has so much more depth with video. The construction is a lot clearer. There is a lot going on in the fall winter 2010 collection. Dazed Digital got a closer look at the collection. They have some great photos of the all the details. I also like the shots from Purple Magazine. images: style.com

Miu Miu Shoes – Fall Winter 2010 -2011

The shoes from the Miu Miu Fall Winter 2010 – 2011 collection are like nothing I’ve seen before.  I’m not sure what to make of the spats they have going on.  Are they part of the shoe?  I see that they are have Velcro and are removable. I think I prefer the shoes without the spats. These shoes are a little bizarre and I can’t see myself wearing them. What are your thoughts? images:style.com

Lanvin Accessories – Fall Winter 2010

Lanvin Accessories – Fall Winter 2010

I love the jewellery in the Lanvin Ready to Wear – Fall Winter 2010 – 2011 collection. My first thought was Klingons. For some reason the Lanvin fall winter 2010 jewellery gives me a Klingon’s vibe.  It seems to fit the warrior theme. I couldn’t get it out of my head so I asked The Grumpy Owl. He agreed and and sent me a picture of Gowron. Now I don’t feel that crazy. images: style.com and timelinestudio.com

LGFW – Joe Fresh Fall Winter 2010 – 2011

I battle the crowds and complete silliness of attending a Joe Fresh show for one reason.  Models.  It’s not for the clothing in any way shape or form.  This season Joe brought in Crystal Renn and Kirsten Owen.  I had to see Crystal Renn with my own eyes as I’ve had suspicion about this “plus size” label she has been given.  You know what people, it’s all bullshit.  Crystal Renn is a far cry from plus sized.  People who seem to think that this is a win for the average sized women seem to forget that Crystal Renn is anything but average.  This girl is a model the last time I checked.  She’s 5’10 and has all the features that required.  She’s on the edges of that bell curve and that is the complete opposite of your average person.  She is gorgeous and has great hair. Joe Fresh jumped on the fur bandwagon hard.  Of  course a lot was faux.  I thought everything was faux but the line sheet is telling me differently.  I really …

LGFW – Pink Tartan Fall Winter 2010

LGFW – Pink Tartan Fall Winter 2010

The Olympus PEN died just before the Pink Tartan Fall Winter 2010 fashion show. I have no pictures and I wasn’t happy. Just another headache to deal with on Wednesday which was painful. Battling crowds and terrible entrance points into the runway room has a way of turning one into a bitch very quickly. I remembered how I spent the Spring 2010 Pink Tartan show, drinking a Peroni in the VIP area watching the show on the LG tvs. I wished for a return to those simple days. The show opened with an electric Violinist. I really don’t know what he had to do with the collection. The theme of the Pink Tartan show is aviation. The models wore aviator style hats. Winged shoes and harnesses made of fur and feathers evoked winged gods like Icarus or Mercury. There were bomber jackets of the puffy variety and ones made of leather and trimmed with fur or Mongolian fur. Shapes were generally body conscious with legging like pants and dresses. Some dresses broke from their body …
