The cat eye sunglasses will always be my favourite out of the Alexander Wang Sunglasses collection. They are so much fun. I was playing around during his visit to Holt Renfew and played a little dress up.
This Balenciaga Pre-Fall 2010 coat is to die for. I tried it on at Holt Renfrew. The colour is so incredibly vibrant. Of course it fits like a glove.
I love the portraits in the Steven Meisel shot Ad Campaign for the Balenciaga Fall 2010 – 2011 collection.
I don’t care much for the standing shots and I would have preferred a different background colour. The portraits are very powerful.
Each model is quite striking looking.

Events This Week
Alexander Wang visited his fans in Toronto last week at Holt Renfrew. There was a public personal appearance in the afternoon and a private party in the evening. I was at work during the day so I went to the party.
I wasn’t too star struck by Alexander and I managed to get a quick hello and photo with him. He’s just one of those beautiful people. The man has a flawless complexion. He was also very good at working the crowd and talking to everyone.
Holt Renfrew setup the 2nd floor with a ton of Alexander Wang merchandise and samples of the Fall 2010 collection. I’m a lover of the Wang accessory. The shoes and bags are always a hit. I wasn’t all that jazzed about this Fall 2010 Ready to Wear collection back in February but after seeing some of the pieces that Holt Renfrew is picking up in person, I have to say I’m a fan. Great pants and blazers are everywhere. It seems to be a trend, I didn’t care much for Spring Summer 2010 until I saw it in person too.

Hermès had a small party to feature a special film installation called Foot Ball created by artist Marcus Tomlinson. The fall 2010 Hermès shoe collection was the inspiration for the film. There was a preview of the upcoming Fall 2010 accessories collection also.
Every shoe has a thousand and one tales to tell, and Marcus Tomlinson believes each one, following them step by step. In his enthusiasm for Pierre Hardy’s designs at Hermès, the artist, photographer and maker of animation films has become their messenger: “His shoes strike a perfect balance between design and craftsmanship, between tried and trusted skills and what seems to me is a very limpid form of inspiration.”
Patiently and passionately, the artist has composted FOOT BALL, the film of an imaginary day in the life of a part of shoes. And so there are, filching fragments from our own lives – step by step, with measured tread, from a standing start, or dragging their feet.
The installation will be available for public viewing in the Hermès Bloor Street store until July 31, 2010. I took some video of the installation.
Then I found a link to the complete video online so that if you can’t visit the store you can still see what the Marcus Tomlinson installation is about. View the film here
Repping with the Hermès scarf - image: Dwayne Evans
This was my first invitation to an event at the Hermès store. I was very excited as I’m such a huge Hermès fan. It also gave me an excuse to go wild with the Olympus E-PL1 in the store without question. I have tons of photos from that I will be sharing in other posts. I could stare at the scarves forever in that store, they are so vibrant and beautiful. The prints are so intricate that I’m just amazed at the craftsmanship and time required to make one. They are works of art. There was a little photobooth set up so you could play a little dress up in Hermès with photographer Dwayne Evans. Dwayne took the shots of me in Polysh Magazine and it was good to reconnect with him. I have some other shots I have to track down from him to post. They are fun too.
The riding boots were my favourite shoes of the fall collection. They are perfect. New to fall are the lacquered wood bracelets. They are fun, stackable bracelets in a variety of colours and sizes. They are a lower price point than most other bracelets in the Hermès family. Some of the new scarf prints that caught my eye are Cent Plis des Miao and Ex Libris en Camouflage. I also have my eye on a proper scarf ring and I’m loving the Bolduc ring in Palladium.
These shirts by E for Effort Loose Leaf Apparel are so cool. I guess you have to be of a certain age to appreciate the memories a shirt like this would invoke. I’m talking about a time before computers were everywhere were and we had to write things down in books.

The buzz about the TOMMY by Tommy Hilfiger Holiday 2010 preview was that uber cool, fashion god Kate Lanphear from Elle Magazine would be in attendance. She floated around The Gladstone Hotel briefly, stunning everyone with her beauty and killer outfit. I only get starstruck around editors like Kate. She was gone so fast I didn’t get a photo with her, oh well.
So TOMMY is Tommy Hilfiger’s first project since being acquired by Phillips-Van Heusen Corp. They are hoping to grab some of the market that American Apparel, Gap, Abercrombie & Fitch and American Eagle Outfitters are targeting. They are hoping to get 25 year olds that aren’t looking for typical preppy Tommy Hilfiger. It’s a men’s and women’s line that will consist of knits, denim and outerwear from $24 to $139.
Tommy aims to focus on handmade details, distinctive materials and unexpected pairings for unique looks. For example, a washed, tailored jacket could be mixed with vintage-inspired long johns and hand-painted brogues, or a men’s wear shirt coupled with a slouchy boy-fit sweatshirt and destroyed denim and cropped motorcycle boots shown with a feminine clutch.(source)
Tommy is “absolutely a reaction†to the ubiquity of specialty store environments, said Gary Sheinbaum, chief executive officer of Tommy Hilfiger USA. “The way we’re going to merchandise Tommy will be distinctive and different, not so formulaic. It will be more of a fun, dynamic experience. The product itself, we feel, is going to be a fresh take on the preppy traffic, done in a fresh, young, cool way. When we look around, we don’t see anyone doing anything like this.â€
“We’re very careful,†Sheinbaum said. “We understand that, in today’s environment, you have to have a great price-value proposition.â€(source)
This collection will launch in Canada in October with three retail stores, two of those being in Toronto and one in Edmonton. The collection will also be available in 14 existing Tommy Hilfiger stores in Canada. The Canadian launch is due to the large retail business here. It’s possible that the line could have a wider launch and international rollout.
The Tommy store design will be a white box with a pop of color, with decorative objects and modern art installations in the windows and throughout the space. The store’s optimal size is about 4,000 to 4,500 square feet, Sheinbaum said.(source)
The line itself looked pretty cute. I’m sure that had a lot to do with Kate Lanphear’s styling. There were some fun details like the embroidered eyeglasses that I really enjoyed. There was a lot of denim and military influenced jackets paired with sweaters of all varieties. To make a final judgment I really need to feel and see the clothes up close. It will be interesting to watch how this line unfold in October.
I couldn’t take my eyes off the male models. They were just so good-looking, it was a bit scary. The launch party itself was very well done. There was the presentation upstairs on the 2nd floor for an hour. Then everyone, including the models, moved downstairs for the after party. I felt sorry for the models who had to wear these heavy layers during our frequent heat waves in Toronto. There was a flipbook making station which is always a hit at events. Add some extrovert models and it’s a total party. The Globe and Mail has some great photos from the event on their post called TOMMY by Tommy Hilfiger presentation. There is a photo of me with friends included and a snap of Kate Lanphear in the slideshow.

I headed to the Drinks Show 2010 this year. It’s always been one of those things I say I want to do every summer, but never get around to it.
The Drinks Show is a cocktail extravaganza that is celebrating Canada’s growing cocktail culture. Sipping cool cocktails on a hot summers night while overlooking the breathtaking views of Toronto’s skyline has also made this Show one of the hottest events of the year.
There is a flat fee for admission and you then buy tickets for the sample. I attended the show on a media pass and that got me free entry and some tickets for samples. I brought Gail McInnes as my guest and we boarded the Fun Bus to Polson Pier. This was also my first time visiting Polson Pier. I’ve seen a few concerts at what was then called The Docks, but I had never been to the patio and pier area.
It was a gorgeous setting for a party. Polson Pier provides spectacular views of the city. There were many booths setup and we didn’t try everything. I didn’t like the Pernod Absinthe much. It was in a mixed cocktail called the Moulin Lemonade (Pernod Absinthe, San Pellegrino Limonata, mint). It’s amazing that the Three Olives Float Flipper (Three Olives Root Beer Vodka, Pepsi Max, whipped cream, cherry) tasted exactly like root beer. Root Beer lovers this is a dangerous vodka for you. I really liked the Prairie Raspberry (Prairie Vodka, Raspberries, lime, cranberry juice, basil). Prairie Vodka is an organic vodka from the US. Bruce Wills vodka was available; I didn’t drink any. I can’t believe he has a vodka brand, just went I thought the perfume thing was strange.
Some of the non drinking attractions included a make your own Inception movie poster and a photo booth. Gail and I acted like hams and did both. She was kissing Leo and I was the paparazzi. We continued tasting and had the Dusk Martini (Polar Ice Vodka, Creme de Cacao and Dove Dusk Chocolate shavings). It was your standard chocolate martini. The Vitality Daiquiri (Spiced Rum, Sour Mix, Tube of Intuition My Vitality) has Intuition My Vitality which is a natural energy booster in liquid form. Could this be the next Redbull and Vodka?
The best drink of the day was the Crown Spice. It’s my new absolute favourite mixed drink now.
In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, add 1.5 oz Crown Royal, 1 oz. lime juice, 1 oz simple syrup and 1 coin of fresh jalapeño. Shake sharply and strain into a rock glass filled with ice. Garnish with a jalapeño.
I’ve been making this constantly. I use brown sugar for my simply syrup and have substituted Crown for Canadian Club. It’s refreshing, tart and delicious. The spiciness of the jalapeño goes well with citrus.
