Marc Jacobs & Louis Vuitton Documentary

Marc Jacobs & Louis Vuitton Documentary
I found the Marc Jacob & Louis Vuitton documentary on Youtube. It seems to be missing the last little bit of the documentary but the quality is not bad. However it is only partially dubbed. There are no subtitles either. There is a lot of conversation in French that isn’t translated which is a bit of a shame. I will have to grab the DVD because it’s quite a fascinating movie.

From Japan to America, the LV sign dominates the fashion scene. And, one man alone designs the Louis Vuitton creations—the exceptional Marc Jacobs. With unprecedented access to one of the world’s hottest and busiest designers, Loïc Prigent offers an intimate and revealing portrait of the reclusive Marc Jacobs and the world of haute couture. Whether in the offices and workrooms of Paris and New York, the back of his car, or backstage at a fashion show, we see a genius at work. Jacobs endures unimaginable pressure to chart new paths in fashion as he straddles the demands of the Louis Vuitton conglomerate and his own Marc Jacobs label.(source)

I got a Marksover

Mark’s aka Mark’s Work Warehouse has decided to change focus and is now trying to get people to think of them differently. They’ve changed their name to Mark’s to rid themselves of the work warehouse moniker. With this they’ve changed some of the offerings in the store to appeal to a larger audience but still serve that core business of workwear.

To get the word out about this change they invited members of the media to:

Come experience the latest in style and innovation from Mark’s Work Wearhouse. We’re pleased to invite you to an interactive style event, featuring the Spring/Summer 2010 clothing line from Mark’s Work Wearhouse.

They called this a Marksover and we used it as a hashtag for twitter conversations. This would include a talk with Marks representatives about the new innovations they have added, a stylist to help you select a perfect Marks outfit, hairstylist to work your do and a makeup artist to round out the whole package. I was told it was an exercise to see the reactions from different media groups to the clothing. I represented some of the fashion group.

We invite you to try on pieces from Mark’s Spring/Summer 2010 collection, engage with both our Mark’s team and local style experts (stylist Afiya Francisco, make-up/appearance specialist Janine Falcon and hair stylist Greg May) and document your style experience with a personalized photo shoot. And as an added bonus, all attendees will be given a gift voucher to spend at a local Mark’s retail location so they can bring the Mark’s innovation story home with them post-event.

Mark’s core audience is still your typical middle class white couple with kids and busy schedules. They are looking for ease of use, simplicity and comfort. Obviously, I’m not their demographic and I was very skeptical that Marks has changed enough to impress this fashion lover. Curiosity was burning me up so I accepted. The High Road team created this huge production with the stylist, hair and makeup. I had to see it for myself.

First we learned about the new innovations at Marks which included moisture wicking materials, built-in bras, shapewear inserts, colour fading resistant materials and shoes with better support for comfort. There are more which you can read on the website. A lot of problems the Mark’s staff mentioned as being issues to their customer aren’t mine. One innovation is called curvetech which is basically bras and shapewear features added to tank tops and dresses. I never worry about breasts support. I’ve got model tits. I can go without a bra. Even if I wanted to us this product I couldn’t, the small would never fit me. There were shirts that were wrinkle proof; I like ironing. These weren’t my issues but they were bang on for their target market.

Next, I met with Afiya who had some items for me to try on, mostly sporty things. A lot of things were hit and miss. Mark’s had jean leggings which looked promising until I tried them on. They weren’t true to leggings didn’t fit like the second skin I expected. Perhaps if they had a smaller size but I was at the limit. I expected this to be honest, most places like Mark’s or Reitmans don’t make sizes I can fit into. I finally found some denim shorts that I like and would wear. This was paired with a grey colour fast safe tank top. The tanks and tshirts from Mark’s are very comfortable. Sizing was an issue for trying on some button up tops that looked good. The last three pieces were a red belt, a black cardigan with a very fashion cut (friends couldn’t believe it was Mark’s when I told them) and a vibrant blue spring jacket. As for shoes I got these little red runners that look like P.F. Flyers. The shoes use something called Quadcomfort (A Mark’s innovation) which provides cushioning, support and comfort. We were given the complete outfits in addition to the gift certificate. I’ve worn everything given to me outside of the event except the running shoes and shorts so far. They are some nice pieces. I think the blue coat is my favourite of the bunch.

After styling I got a slight trim by Greg May. I was now able to see that “I got my hair did by Greg May.” If I was a white girl he would be my hair stylist for sure. Janine Falcon, a fellow Worthy 30, did my makeup and it was awesome. I have to book an appointment  to learn what she did and how to apply it to myself. I suck at using pencils, brushes and the like. I grabbed some accessories for the photo shoot with Rannie aka Photojunkie.

Monday night I finally used the giftcard. As I expected I had a hard time finding things in small. Mark’s why do you make it so hard. I ended up leaving with two scarves, two watches and a really cute and colourful water-repellent packable anorak. No real clothing at all.  Does Mark’s have a new customer in me?  Not really, but I have some pieces that will get a lot of wear.  I might go back for another anorak in an obnoxious colour, they are just so cute.

I loved Mikhael Kale Fall Winter 2010 – 2011 collection. On the weekend I got a chance to see the clothing up close. Mikhael was shooting the lookbook in an alley in the east end.

I’m quoted in the China Textile News Weekly Magazine

I was asked to provide a short quote on trends during LG Fashion Week for the China Textile News Weekly Magazine. I want – I got has made it to print in PRC. Ha Ha.

200,000 copies a day, that’s pretty crazy.

So you wondering what I said. Here’s the English translation.

Black and fur were two very strong trends that permeated the collections at LG Fashion Week Fall 2010. Most collections used a lot of black or very dark colours. Surprisingly, the camel coat trend didn’t take hold in Toronto like it did internationally. Fur was everywhere and LG Fashion Week was following right along with this huge international trend. The question was “who wasn’t using fur?” Designers used it as accents on sleeves, shoulders and accessories. Sometimes the use of fur seemed a bit contrived and only done for trend sake. Then there were other designers like IZMA who perfected its use.

i want: Debbie Pant by Ewanika

I’ve been obsession over the Debbie Pant by Toronto based designer Ewanika.

They look like a great convergence of style and function.  They got some room in the thigh and hips which I like a lot.  The pockets look like they sit flat, sometimes that style has a tendency to gape. I’m so glad that these roomier styles of pants are everywhere now. It’s perfect for track legs.

I like that Ewanika uses customers as models.  This is Leslie Wormworth an Ewanika customer since 2001.

Oscar de la Renta at Holt Renfrew

Oscar de la Renta at Holt Renfrew

So Oscar de la Renta made an appearance in Toronto for a fancy fundraiser and a PA at Holt Renfrew. Unfortunately I was at work during his Holt Renfrew PA. I definitely didn’t have the money to be at his fancy fundraiser either. All I have is these photos that were provided to me by Holts. Maybe one day I’ll get to meet this legend.

Holt’s prepared for Oscar’s arrival with dedicated windows.

Holt Renfrew unveils its “Croquet, Anyone?” national window installation to celebrate the arrival of spring. Mannequins play with giant mallets and brightly coloured croquet balls inside the windows.

“The uncompromising style of C.Z. Guest, the timelessness of Slim Aaron’s photography and the unapologetic spirit of The Official Preppy Handbook were all inspirations for our croquet windows this spring,” says John Gerhardt, Creative Director of Holt Renfrew. “We played with patterns and proportions this national window installation, resulting in whimsical and joyful treatments.”

The window fashions take inspiration from the prep-school trend from the spring 2010 collections of designers such as Oscar de la Renta and Nanette Lepore for women and Ralph Lauren for men. Florals, plaids and polka dots are mixed together to portray fancy and fun.

To celebrate a special personal appearance by legendary designer Oscar de la Renta on April 15, one of Holt Renfrew’s Bloor Street windows is dedicated to Mr. de la Renta’s spring 2010 collection.

Vintage Marc Jacobs in Documentary Form

Vintage Marc Jacobs in Documentary Form
I found this vintage Marc Jacobs documentary though someone I follow on twitter named Erich Ben. He has a great collection of YouTube fashion videos. The documentary starts from the beginning of Marc Jacobs’ career and stops at the beginning of his early Louis Vuitton days. Marc is so young in these videos. It’s interesting to compare this early Marc Jacobs to the current one. Do you guys remember some classic Marc Jacobs styles? The pony tail and headband are here for the viewing.

Phoebe Philo by David Sims

Phoebe Philo by David Sims - The Gentlewoman Spring Summer 2010

The Spring Summer 2010 issue of Gentlewoman Magazine has an interview and photoshoot with designer Phoebe Philo of Céline. This is the debut issue for the magazine.

The Gentlewoman is a new biannual style magazine for a new decade. Featuring inspirational, international women, it pairs ambitious journalism with a sartorial and intelligent perspective on fashion that is focused on personal style – the way women actually look, think and dress.

I really liked the photos taken of Phoebe, she’s just so damn cool.

Tim Gunn Critiques Superhero Costumes

Tim Gunn Critiques Superhero Costumes
Wow. As someone who loves the world of superheros and their stories it was great to see the Tim Gunn Critiques Superhero Costumes videos. He approached the subject matter with no judgments and seriousness. The host of the web series Crazy Sexy Geeks, Alan Kistler invited Tim Gunn to discuss superhero fashion throughout the years. They go after everyone: Spiderman, Superman, Superwoman, Catwoman, Batman, Robin, X-Men, Nightwing and The Hulk.
