Boutiques on eBay x Coal Miner’s Daughter Style Challenge

eBay Canada contacted me this with a Style Challenge request. My mission, should I choose to accept, would be to style an office and nighttime look featuring the Bee Print Bustier by Jordan de Ruiter. A couple of weeks ago on twitter I mentioned how much I liked the Bee Print Bustier so I was happy to take on the challenge.

Boutiques on eBay x Coal Miner’s Daughter Style Challenge.

Let’s start with the office look. I pretty much did what I always do when I want to wear something inappropriate to the office, put a blazer on it. This look obviously wouldn’t fly in my financial district office place but many of you work in lest draconian dress code environments. I’m wearing my Junya Watanabe Commes des Garcons blazer (which I picked up at The Room for a steal), H&M high waisted pencil skirt and 3.1 Phillip Lim Chelsea boots. For the night look I ditched the blazer and swapped out the boots for gold sandals from Aldo Shoes. The night look is my World Pride 2014 look for Saturday’s parties!

The Bee Print Bustier is part of Boutiques on eBay which they setup to support Canadian Designers. For this exclusive collection they collaborated with Toronto based boutique Coal Miner’s Daughter. All pieces are under $90 with free shipping Canada Wide. Other designers in the collection are Jool Clothing, Jordan de Ruiter, Haller, Sara Duke, 3rd Floor Studio, and Norwegian Wood. The collection ends on June 30, 2014 so get your orders in ASAP.

i want: A Clockwork Orange Canvas Book Bag by Out of Print Clothing

A Clockwork Orange Canvas Book Bag by Out of Print Clothing

A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess is one of my favourite books. I re-read the book and watch the Kubrick movie it every couple of years. The art by David Pelham from the 1972 Penguin softcover is my favourite rendition of the book’s cover. A quick Google Image Search on “a clockwork orange book” will give you a list of other covers and it’s easy to see why David’s work is so iconic. You can see some other famous David Pelham covers over at Flavorwire.

So when Out of Print Clothing created their A Clockwork Orange series using this iconic cover image I had to own it. I purchased the grey A Clockwork Orange sweatshirt and it’s easily the most commented on piece of clothing I own.

The shirts and phone cases are great too but the A Clockwork Orange Canvas Book Bag is calling my name. Now, I have no damn need for another canvas bag, I have a closet shelf full of them but I just can’t resist the all over print of this bag.

You can buy the A Clockwork Orange Canvas Book Bag online at Out of Print Clothing for $18 USD plus shipping.

Out of Print Clothing is a US based company that “celebrates the world’s greatest stories through fashion”. For every product that is sold, a book is donated to their partner Books for Africa.

i want: Sorry T-shirt by Fairgoods

Sorry T-shirt by Fairgoods

Sorry T-shirt by Fairgoods

I get a lot of t-shirt pitches. If you could see the face I make when I read them you can understand that I don’t pay them much attention. I’m a fashion blogger and I like clothing design. If you t-shirt is just showing off your graphic design skills on some American Apparel t-shirt I’m generally not impressed. I have a shit load of Threadless t-shirts, believe me, I’m over that phase in my life.

However, I’ve learned to never say never in life and last week a t-shirt pitch arrived in my inbox which I adore. Fairgood’s art director Shauna Luedtke came up with the Sorry t-shirt which puts a tongue in cheek look at one major Canadian stereotype, politeness.

Anyone that has lived in Canada for a long time falls into this trap. We say sorry all the damn time, even when we don’t have to. I do this regularly and I don’t even have an idea of where in my upbringing this politeness thing manifested itself.

The Sorry t-shirt was pitched to me as a Canada Day story. I’m still having trouble wrapping my head around why some of these holiday pitches exist but I’m not going to complain now because it worked in my favour.

The Sorry t-shirt is printed on a red 100% cotton American Apparel t-shirt (buwahahahaaha, sorry, just recalling the first paragraph in this post) and costs $24USD. You can purchase the t-shirt on the Fairgoods website.

Fairgoods is based out of Calgary and sell “curated selection of accessories, housewares, apparel, and decor, as well as digital goods like type. Some of our products are things we’ve created with makers, some are things we’ve made ourselves, and some of them are existing products we love. (Source)”

Luminato at The Hearn Generating Station

Luminato and Yves Saint Laurent Opening Night Party and Big Bang Bash

Luminato and Yves Saint Laurent Opening Night Party and Big Bang Bash

I’ve been around the event block many, many times in this city and these days it takes a lot to impress me. Luminato’s Big Bang Bash and the Yves Saint Laurent Opening Night Party at the Hearn Generating Station did just that last night. It was a combination of a spectacular venue and major nostalgia that took hold of me and never let go.

Luminato and Yves Saint Laurent Opening Night Party and Big Bang Bash

Luminato and Yves Saint Laurent Opening Night Party and Big Bang Bash

I love Luminato. It’s been a great addition to the Toronto arts scene. Anticipation was high for the after I received the press release letting the world know that the Hearn Generating Station would be the location for this year’s fundraising gala. I didn’t know anything about the Hearn Generating Station at the time but clarity happened once I read over the words “The one-of-a-kind venue has never before been used for an event like this, of this magnitude, but glimpses of the facility have been seen in the popular films, Pacific Rim and Robocop.” I just watched the horrible Robocop remake the day before. I knew the movie was filmed in Toronto but I had no idea The Hearn was location of one of the memorable battle scenes. The Hearn was one of the best things in the movie to be honest and now I knew its name. Even better, I was going to get to drink cold beers in its cavernous space.

The Richard L. Hearn Generating Station is located in the Toronto Port Lands. It opened in 1951 and burned coal that was transported via the St. Lawrence Seaway. In the 70s the plant was converted to natural gas and continued until it stopped power production in 1983. The plant played supporting roles in energy production till 1991. There were two major attempts to buy the plant where one group wanted to turn it into a large hockey based sports center and another group that wanted to turn it into a movie studio. Both options fell through but the plant still occasionally shows up in movies.
The Big Bang Bash fundraising dinner had many of the Toronto’s influential benefactors, artists, politicians, sponsors and guest taking in the Berlin Underground theme. Table settings recreated the Berlin wall complete with graffiti and cinderblocks. Jorn Weisbrodt, Artistic Director of Luminato Festival had this to say about The Hearn:

“The moment I walked into the Hearn Generating Station I knew I wanted to do something in this space. It is full of possibilities. It reminded me of the days when I moved to Berlin, just a couple of years after the wall came down. Every week there was a different club opening in an amazing underground location and a few weeks later it disappeared or grew bigger and bigger. The Hearn space asks to be filled with ideas and I love the idea of juxtaposing the glamour of a big gala with the rawness but grandeur of the space. It reminds me of Piranesi’s Carceri etchings. I am so grateful to Paul Vaughan and everyone at Studios of America to let us play in the space.”

Luminato and Yves Saint Laurent Opening Night Party and Big Bang Bash

Luminato and Yves Saint Laurent Opening Night Party and Big Bang Bash

I didn’t attend the fancy dinner but Isabella Rossellini did! She’s here performing Green Porno at the festival. After the dinner the Luminato and Yves Saint Laurent Opening Night Party started. Like everyone who didn’t drive, I took at taxi. It was a really crappy ride. My driver was a dick to be honest, honking and picking fights with other drivers. I also had to break out driving instructions on my phone so we could find the place. To top it all off, he didn’t have change.

All those frustrations sort of melted away when the huge smokestack came into view and the expansive plant grew larger. A wave of nostalgia hit me and I was taken back to my rave days. I went to a lot of raves in 1991 – 1993 and one of the most memorable was held at some factory in the west end. I wish I could remember where it was but I was still in high school and living in Richmond Hill at the time. I had no concept of downtown. We met a shuttle bus at Union station and they whisked us off to this random large factory to party and dance our asses off.

The Hearn brought back those feelings with a vengeance. I felt like a 18 year old again minus the minus the hallucinations. The Hearn dwarfed that factory. It is vast, so vast. 650 thousand cubic metres of space cannot be accurately described. It can fit 12 Parthenons inside! You could lose yourself staring upwards into its cavernous space. The space is in a state of decay but it’s beautiful. Spotlights and colours gave guests glimpses into the dark recesses outside of the party area. Photos don’t do it justice. I’ve never had an inkling for being an urban explorer but I had an almost impossible urge to start climbing any stair or rafter possible. I want a higher vantage point. What hidden secrets did the depths of The Hearn hold for those brave enough? Chatter throughout the night revolved around the insurance price tag and the fact that a concrete floor was poured a couple weeks before just for this event.

YSL had beauty stations where guests could try out the latest makeup and there was a contest for a Saint Laurent handbag which I didn’t win. Previews for the new Yves Saint Laurent movie and YSL ads repeated on big screens throughout the night. Hot Pop Factory (http://www.hotpopfactory.com/) had a booth showing off their 3D printing skills. Guests walked away with laser printed leather bracelets and polymer brooches.

The Luminato and Yves Saint Laurent Opening Night Party didn’t beat the rave on the dancing front. A few of us took advantage of the DJ and dance floor but I couldn’t help wonder how amazing it would have been if Toronto was a dancing city. Despite the very Toronto no dancing thing, The Hearn took me to a place that I didn’t think was possible in Toronto. I felt like I was attending some super exclusive party in London or New York, places that would take advantage of a beautiful, thought provoking space like The Hearn. My hope is that this party sparks some more interest in the space and that someone wants to see it make a cultural contribution to the city like Wychwood Barns, The Distillery District and Evergreen Brick Works.

I guess I should mention my outfit. We were warned about the space ahead of time and I forgot flats and dressed like it was fall. I did the typical Torontonian black with my custom Danier Dress and punched it up with colour using a Gap moto jacket and Kara Ross handbag. Of course, my 3.1 Phillip Lim Chelsea boots were on my feet.

Luminato, I’ve fallen in love with The Hearn. I went on a major research spree and found some really great links that should you check out for more information and photos.

i got: Totem Dopp Pouch by Bookhou

Totem Dopp Pouch by Bookhou

Totem Dopp Pouch by Bookhou

I almost walked away from the Bookhou Totem Dopp Pouch. I was visiting City of Craft for the first time with Monique from MoonRox and we both had our eyes on it. Why the hemming and hawing? Well, I really like cross body bags. They are my staples as they are versatile and easy to carry. Pouches and clutches are kinda a pain in the ass and I only really use them when going to something formal. That being said the Totem Dopp Pouch print was gold and I really liked the oatmeal linen it was made from. So, I spent the 30 bucks and picked one up, at that price it was hard to say no.

Totem Dopp Pouch measures W 25.4 x H 17.78 cm. It’s large enough to carry the essentials (Wallet, Smartphone, Keys, Gum, Mascara and Lip Balm) and it’s not bulky. The print placement varies on each pouch due to its handmade nature. The outer material is 100% linen and the lining is 100% cotton.

Wedding Outfit – ComplexGeometries, Aldo, Jenny Bird

The Totem Dopp Pouch has served me well already. It was the perfect accessory to pair with a recent wedding outfit I put together. The gold dress is complexgeometries, the platforms are Aldo and the earrings are by Jenny Bird. You can see how the Totem Dopp Pouch fits in perfectly! And with that, the purchase was justified.

You can get your own Totem Dopp Pouch via the new One of a Kind Online shopor directly from Bookhou. On both sites the pouch retails for $30 plus applicable shipping.

Bookhou is a Toronto based company and all merchandise is handcrafted in Toronto.

i want: Combinaison Jumpsuit by Horses Atelier

I never knew I wanted a linen jumpsuit in pale pink until I saw that Horses Atelier created one for Spring Summer 2014. Now, that’s a bit of a lie, I’ve always had an interest in jumpsuits. A military flight suit is on my military “I want” list and has been for a long time. I haven’t pursued acquiring a flight suit very actively. When I do come across them they are either too weird-looking like this Soviet MIG flight suit or they are just too big and beyond the magic of alterations. Then there are the colour options which don’t really leave much room for light-hearted fun.

Combinaison by Horses Atelier

Combinaison by Horses Atelier

Combinaison by Horses Atelier provides a great fitting silhouette that looks slim fitting and roomy at the same time. The cotton linen blend will make it cool for the summer even though you’re encased in fabric. It’s got pockets which are a must. I love that it can be dressed up with some heels and a great handbag or it can be completely casual with sneakers and a baseball cap. I’m honestly having thoughts of this jumpsuit paired with my Danielle Meder Doc Martens. It’s really bringing me full circle into this 90s rehash the fashion world is obsessed with right now.

Horses Atelier also makes the Combinaison in black if you are looking for something more stain resilient. The Combinaison by Horses Atelier is made in Toronto. You can buy it via the Horse Atelier online shop for $400. Proceeds from all online sales go to the Clean Clothes Campaign which strives to improve working conditions in the global garment industry.

Horses Atelier is a Toronto based fashion brand by Claudia Dey and Heide Sopinka. Stockists in Toronto include Jonathan + Olivia, The Bay’s White Space and 6 by Gee Beauty.

I want – I got’s Mother’s Day Gift Guide

It’s Mother’s Day on Sunday and if you are like me, you haven’t bought anything yet. So here’s a gift guide for all your procrastinators out there like me.

I want - I got's Mother's Day Gift Guide

I want – I got’s Mother’s Day Gift Guide

There is nothing like a long, relaxing soak in the tub. Get mom the Mums Goodies pack from Lush. It’s already wrapped and has a mix of relaxing bath time products. While you are at it, pick her up some Lush Fresh Face Masks. I’ve been test driving Cosmetic Warrior and Catastrophe Cosmetic and I’m a fan of the results.

Ebay has teamed up with local designers Anu Raina and my friend Monique Chan to introduce the eBay 4 Mom collection. All items are under $75 and shipping is included. There are beautiful print scarves from Anu and beautiful MoonRox earrings and necklaces from Monique. The designs are unique to eBay and available until May 11, 2014. After that they are gone so get to ordering.

The 7 Virtues Custom Blend Box is a great set of vegan fragrances made with natural essential oils that you can customize to create your own unique scent. It’s also a company with a great story as they work with families from countries that are rebuilding to harvest the raw ingredients. You can find the 7 Virtues Custom Blend Box at The Hudson’s Bay. I own this product myself and the scents are really incredible to wear together or alone.

If you are looking to splurge on jewellery for Mom check out Kavut.com. There are a lot of styles to choose from and I’m particularly taken with the stunning Melanie Georgacopoulos Sliced Pearl Bracelet.

It’s Veuve Clicquot’s Yelloweek in Toronto and they are hosting Yellow Brunch at Brassaii. Take Mom out for a nice brunch and drink some Veuve. Reservations  416-598-4730.

Grab you Mom a bouquet of beautiful flowers. Hit up the Toronto Flower Market this Saturday from 10 – 3pm, 1056 Queen Street

I was going to get my Mom tickets to The Lion King but she’s seen it already. I went last week for the first time and I have to say it melted my cynical heart and it’s one of the most exciting and emotional musicals I’ve ever seen. I highly recommend it.

Danier Leather has a whole section dedicated to Mom on their website. I was in the store recently and the selection is seriously amazing. I love the Georgia lamb leather biker in blush.

The Reitmans x Eve Salvail tshirt collaboration is the bomb. I’m such a fan girl of Eve and she’s an amazing artist. The shirts are 25 bucks and available at Eaton Centre and TD Centre Reitman locations or online.

I generally hate associating the kitchen with Moms (My Dad was the cook in my family) but for a lot of people, Mom is the person who feeds you. So you should help her out by picking up my most treasured kitchen gadgets. Regular readers know I’m a massive fan of Sodastream. Pair it with some Torani Syrup from BuyCoffeeCanada.com and that is heaven right there. My new must have kitchen gadget is the Nespresso VertuoLine machine. It’s a godsend. Now you can have the best of both worlds, espresso and freshly brewed coffee. This is an item I can’t live without.

My Mom is always asking me to print photos of my niece and nephew for her so definitely hooking her up with tech gadgets is a must. I’m a big fan of Microsoft’s Surface 2 Pro and the HP Photosmart 7520 e-All-in-One Printer. I featured them on my Holiday gift guide and still stand by that recommendation.

I haven’t mentioned shoes yet and normally I’d post some beautiful heel to shop but this time I’m going to the complete opposite, buy Mom some New Balance runners. Running shoes are in style now (nice of the rest of you to catch up) and New Balance are the most comfortable runners I’ve worn. I love the retro styling and even their more modern designs. The custom option is pretty slick. You can find New Balance at The Hudson’s Bay and New Balance stores.

If you are a gift card type, my go to options for Mother’s day are Holt Renfrew, The Hudson’s Bay and Net-a-Porter.

I could go on forever with Gift Guides and it’s always hard to decide when to stop but here we are. Happy Shopping procrastinators!

Chanel Les 4 Ombres

Chanel Les 4 Ombres

Chanel Les 4 Ombres

This week I got to preview the new eye shadow palette from Chanel at the Holt Renfrew Bloor Street. Chanel Les 4 Ombres takes inspiration from the classic Chanel tweed fabric. The colours for each eye shadow palette are literally based on thread colours from previous Chanel tweed combinations. There are six combinations available:
Tissé Vénitien – A tweed that reveals the mysteries of Venice
Tissé Mademoiselle – A tweed in the colours of dawn
Tissé Cambon – A very feminine tweed that accentuates the style of Chanel
Tissé Gabrielle – A tweed that borrows its grays from a stormy sky
Tissé Vendôme – A sparkling tweed that reflects the City of Lights
Tissé Riviera – A tweed with hints of Southern France

image

Chanel Les 4 Ombres

All the colour combinations are beautiful but I love Tissé Cambon, Tissé Riviera, Tissé Vénitien and Tissé Gabrielle. Chanel had one of their amazing makeup artists on hand to test drive Tissé Vénitien on me. Great makeup artists have a way of making you feel amazing and excited about a product and this woman had that in spades. She transformed my eyes in a matter of minutes and took the time to show me each step. She made it look so easy to apply. Easy enough that she convinced me that I really need to get with the eye shadow program. “Miss geekigirl”, she said, “don’t worry about perfection, you’re blending it anyways.” These words stuck with me. I love eye makeup but I’m pretty much scared to try it out. My hands aren’t steady and I have no artistic abilities.

Chanel Les 4 Ombres

After my session with the Chanel makeup artist, I feel like I could recreate the look. I’m going to be practicing with the Tissé Vénitien gift I received.

Chanel Les 4 Ombres

Holt Renfrew Bloor Street is having a Les 4 Ombres discovery event this week. Chanel specialists are available to answer all your questions about the collection. Also, the Chanel mascara vending machine is back until the end of next week. It’s super fun to play with; all you need to do is buy one of the Le Volume mascaras. Don’t worry; you won’t be disappointed as Chanel gets my mascara thumbs up.

ALDO Fights AIDS with Waris Ahluwalia

ALDO Fights AIDS with Waris Ahluwalia

ALDO Fights AIDS. ALDO and Waris Ahluwalia (designer and CEO of Waris Loves You and House of Waris, actor and globe-trotting tastemaker) have teamed up to raise money for Partners In Health and its HIV/AIDS programs. Waris and ALDO created a really cute friendship bracelet that come in four different colours for $5. All the proceeds from the sale of the #FriendFight bracelets will go to Partners in Health.

Partners In Health strives to achieve two overarching goals: to bring the benefits of modern medical science to those most in need of them and to serve as an antidote to despair. In 1998, Partners In Health’s HIV Equity Initiative in rural Haiti was one of the first programs in the world to provide free, comprehensive HIV/AIDS treatment in settings of poverty. The program’s success changed how the world approaches and funds diseases of the poor. Today, Partners In Health provides housing, water, food, and psychosocial support to thousands of people living with HIV; addressing the root causes of poverty and disease, and not just the disease itself.

“I always say my inspirations come from love and history. With these bracelets, it’s about standing side by side with friends and loved ones for what’s right and noble – transforming history together. The arrow symbolizes truth, justice and movement forward. It’s a powerful way to create change.” – Waris Ahluwalia

“We have been committed to the fight against AIDS as far back as 1985, when few were willing to take a stand. It’s a cause very close to our heart and today, more than ever, we continue our commitment to raising awareness and funds to help protect and educate people around the world. We’ve come a long way but the fight is not over yet. This bracelet is an important symbol. It represents friendship and solidarity. It’s an invitation to join together in the fight against AIDS.” – ALDO BENSADOUN, Founder and Executive Chairman of the ALDO Group

The #FriendsFight bracelets are available online at aldoshoes.com and in select stores worldwide. So pick up a bracelet of three and tag your social media posts with the #FriendsFight hashtag.

The other two bracelets in my photo are from Dean Davidson and are available on deandavidson.ca.
